Hi Lena,
You mentioned in an earlier newsletter about people "buying in" to the
Statn drugs.
My doctor swears by them, and I take Lipitor while my 82 year old mother
takes the generic version of Zocor.
Your article seems to imply that there is a problem with these drugs. Is
that your opinion, or do you know something that no one else, except the
sellers of Rescue, Is reporting? Are these going to be the next Vioxx,
or Celebrex scandal?

ANSWER:
Thanks for your question Kevin. As long as you are searching for truths
you stand a chance of surviving to a ripe old age without continuing
chemical medications...
Yes, your doctor will swear by those since the drug industry educated
him/her in medical school and continues to provide any ongoing education
that he/she receives... I know, I scheduled those appointments for
doctor's to attend and attended the CEU classes for nurses all are the
Drug industry's babies... Your doctor is unaware that there are natural
alternatives to the chemical poison medications and therefore cannot
tell you about them. They do not get nutrition training and cannot tell
you about that either... I was not taught those things in nursing school
as well and had to go outside the medical industry to learn them on my
own... You will have to be the detective and search those out for
yourself as well...
I'm afraid you and your mother's meds will not be exposed as the next
Cox-2 medication scandal - at least not in the near future - since the
pharmaceutical industry is working very hard to squelch any such
publicity. That possibility is very remote at this time... So it's going
to depend on their scientist's blowing the whistle, which a few are
doing and being blackballed from working in the industry making it more
dangerous to the patients consuming those drugs thinking they are
safe...
FYI, my 45 year-old sister-in-law almost died because of both Lipitor
and Zocor until I saw her and worked at finding out what was happening
to her... When she started exhibiting symptoms her doctor simply
switched her from Lipitor to Zocor thinking something would change and
that didn't help and then he tried to tell her it wasn't the medications
causing the problems and said it was psychological... She was totally
depleted of minerals and her muscles, which both do to your body,
tendons and arteries were in severe spasm with mental confusion making
it hard for her to even think on the simplest things. You know the heart
is the biggest muscle in the body and would have eventually shut down
completely... Her doctor, like so many, does not believe in recommending
minerals or vitamins if you eat well, which is a real fallacy (read
1936 Report ), and so she was fast exiting this world.
You and your mother are fortunate that severe side effects haven't shown
up yet... Sadly the majority of side effects are not detected as side
effects to the medication... That I learned by watching thedemise of
patients in the office as they spiraled downhill after starting
medications...
You need to know that the cholesterol scare that the drug industry has
perpetrated is not legitimate for heart disease precursor's...
Especially the way they are now working to get it down below 100. That
number is going to kill gross numbers of people, as the body needs
cholesterol to function and, as with everything in life, each person is
different and some will require huge amounts while others not so large,
but will probably never be attributed to that cause by the medical
profession. If you will read your insert that should come with your
medication, if in fact your druggist even puts it in, it will tell you
that no evidence exists that cholesterol lowering medications will
reduce heart attack or stroke risks, which is the very reason the drug
companies and your doctor say you should take them? Does that make
sense? Not to me? My dh started out with cholesterol readings over 800
in his early forties (26 years ago), just at the beginning phase of
testing in order to prescribe their NEW medication. He took their new
medications until I started seeing what was happening with our patients
in the office and then I convinced him to stop them. Thank God he took
them for less than a year and has no long term side effects that has
ever come to light... and since then his cholesterol readings are in the
280 to 400 range, with his doctor pushing to try and force him to take
the medications, which my dh refuses... They fight about this every
visit, but a person has the right to choose treatments of their choice
and not the doctor's flawed choice... This last summer his MD was so
sure he had blocked carotid arteries, due to the long term cholesterol
readings, that he was ready to clean out his carotid arteries with
surgical intervention, but we went for a second opinion to a specialist
and demanded tests and when they did carotid and arterial ultrasound and
MRI testing his veins and arteries have almost no plaque - less than 3%
- which is lower than most people's. Now if cholesterol was a factor he
would have blocked arteries everywhere but he does not. Just more proof
that their medications are not necessary... Does that mean he will not
develop a heart problem? Who knows as that is so not totally understood
at this time and I doubt that it ever will be... It is now slowly coming
out that inflammation may be the culprit creating blocked arteries and
not cholesterol plaque... It may or may not be the cause but that's much
easier to treat, if you know how? MAYBE 20 years from now, if enough of
us demand accountability from the drug companies, enough scientists will
become honest enough to release the true story behind this drug
motivating farce. Of course the drug companies have to make their
billions of dollars first... Paying attention to inflammation and
preventing it from occurring should be the goal, with the information
now surfacing, but drug companies can't make money with that premise
because their chemical antibiotics are not effective for that purpose. I
do expect that doctors will soon start to prescribe antibiotics trying
to prevent it, which their antibiotics cannot do as the body doesn't
recognize chemicals as legitimate treatment? Pay close attention to gum
inflammation and ongoing viral infections and work to clear and prevent
them?
It's not just my opinion regarding those medications either. Being a
triage nurse in medical offices/clinics, before and after cholesterol
medications came on the market and the bogus scare by the drug
companies, I watched and handled the calls to the doctor's from patients
who had horrific side effects and realized it, but I also paid attention
and I watched those become more ill as the months and years rolled by
after starting the medications, but they nor their doctor had a clue
their illnesses were actually being created by their medications and
sending them to their death... Only the drug maker knows those toxic
facts but are not telling us or doctors. Here is what a report from a

Medicine is not an exact science and the majority of doctor's do not
have the true medical story for treating so why should we expect them to
know it all... They get what the pharmaceutical industry gives them,
unless they are smart and start to look at things outside those
teachings. Thankfully some are changing their way of practicing medicine
and looking at herbs and natural preventative medicine as the true
answer, but so very few at this point... Doctors are human, and like
most, will choose to take the easy way through life!

THE BEAUTY WAY
I guess I'm likely to put anything in my body!
I love spicy foods and Mexican foods in particular. I've "treated"
friends to my favorite homemade spicy dishes. A typical reaction to a
dish bathed in my hot sauce goes like this: they smile and
enthusiastically try a bite; their eyes open far too wide and they begin
to sweat profusely and reach for the water to put out the flames in
their stomachs; then, when voice and reason return, they nod and
politely say, "Tasty." They often don't come back.
One person commented, "I've heard of people who preach hellfire, but
you're the only one I know who hands out samples."
Well, maybe it's not quite that bad, but I'm likely to eat most any kind
of food. And though I exercise regularly, my body is starting to tell me
to be more selective in my diet. I like the woman who stepped off the
scale and was asked by her husband what the verdict was. "According to
the height table," she replied, "I should be about six inches taller."
But more important than the food we put into our bodies are thoughts we
put into our minds. Thoughts of bitterness like, "I hate her!" Thoughts
of despair like, "I'll never be happy again." Thoughts of fear like, "I
could never do that!" And thoughts of worry, thoughts of greed and
thoughts of self-loathing. A constant diet of these killer thoughts will
destroy us long before cholesterol.
The Navajo people have an expression for this. They traditionally
believe that how they fill their minds will shape their lives. So they
want to fill their minds only with that which is good, harmonious and
edifying. They speak of "thinking in the Beauty Way" -- ridding their
minds of all that is destructive and filling them with that which is
good and peaceful. The Beauty Way is the way of love and contentment,
peace and kindness, patience and courage.

Prunus armeniaca
The official name of an yellow to orange small fruit with a pit in
the middle that contains a mountain of healthy nutrients - The Apricot!
Next weeks Ask Lena Health Q & A goes into the seed of the apricot and
it's health properties but the fruit of the apricot is quite healthy on
its own.
When I was doing my research into a question asked about Apricot Seeds
and their health potential I realized I had never given you the story on
the healthy Apricot aka prunus armeniaca. Since we have our own Apricot
trees and I have a pantry full of canned and dried apricots as well as
apricot nectar it stands to reason you should know why we eat so many of
them and why you could benefit as well!
You've probably heard the term "nectar of the gods." It was nectar made
of the juice and pulp of the apricot which was reputedly the drink of
choice of the Greek and Roman gods.
Why eat raw first?
Something I learned a long time ago is; raw fruit when eaten at the
beginning of a meal will allow your other foods to be utilized better
and the fruit enzymes help absorb more nutrients than you can without
consuming fruit first. In some Latin countries dessert is served first
and usually consists of fruit compote with one or more fresh fruits.
This is the same concept that we, here in the United States, eat our
salads first as raw veggies have some of the same enzymes that make it
better for our digestive system.
Apricots come in so many varieties; Dried, canned, frozen or fresh that
it makes for a simple solution to getting those RDV of 4.5 to 5 cups of
fruit a day. They’re readily available year-round, store easily and add
a boost of flavor, color and nutrients to meals or snacks. Fully ripe
apricots ship poorly, so unless you live near an apricot-growing region,
you may have a difficult time finding ripe ones—fruits that are soft to
the touch and brimming with juice. If you find apricots that are plump,
firm, and orange-gold in color, they'll be ready to eat after about two
days of ripening at room temperature Don't buy hard fruits that are
tinged with green—they will never develop full flavor.
Dried apricots come in a number of different forms. The most common are
the bright orange apricot halves; their rich color is the result of the
apricots being treated with sulfur dioxide. If you are allergic to
sulfites, you can look for unsulfured apricots in health food stores.
Because they're untreated, they're brown rather than orange. You may
also find small, whole apricots called Turkish apricots. These are a
much paler orange and are considerably sweeter than regular apricot
halves.
Canned apricots are sold packed in heavy syrup, light syrup, or fruit
juice. The sugary syrups add a lot of empty calories, and the fruit is
so naturally sweet that it really doesn't need the extra sugar. I can
our apricots with syrup made with Stevia rather than sugar.
Nearly 4000+ years ago, a fruit belonging to the rose family was
discovered on the mountain slopes of China. Today, it’s generally
accepted that the Chinese first cultivated this ancient fruit, the wild
ancestor to the present day apricot. It is also believed that the
Chinese considered the apricot to contain special fertility enhancing
properties.
With the strong sensory appeal of apricots’ delicate, velvety skin and
intensely sweet fragrance and flavor, apricot cuttings traveled across
the Persian Empire to the Mediterranean where they flourished. In the
18th century, Spanish explorers introduced apricots to the New World.
California inherited the golden blush fruit planted in the gardens of
Spanish missions. In 1792, the first major production of California
apricots was recorded. Many varieties of the fruit differing in size,
color and flavor are still grown with popular appeal throughout the
world.
The unique mix of compounds found in apricots also makes this fruit a
good choice for helping to fight heart disease. Along with
beta-carotene, apricots contain the other powerful anti-oxidants,
Vitamin C and lycopene. Combined, these compounds help protect against
cancer, heart disease and stroke.
The beta-carotene in apricots is converted to Vitamin A in the body.
This nutrient helps protect the eyes and keep the skin, hair, gums and
various glands healthy. It also helps build bones and teeth. Plus,
research shows that Vitamin A helps to fight infection by maintaining
strong immunity. For this reason, researchers are looking to apricots as
a valuable source of beta-carotene’s healing power. Note: beta-carotene
is often called Vitamin A on food labels.
Apricots contain the following nutrients in different amounts depending
on the form eaten, with raw giving off the most. Apricots are alive with
fiber, are fat free and include the minerals Calcium, Iron, Magnesium,
Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium.
Along with those minerals come the vitamins A, C, B-6, B-12, E, Thiamin,
Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Folate and Folic acid. All making
for great health builders.
Apricots make for a great snack or dessert and my most favorite
is in a pie. I'm not big on eating pie unless it's fruit and Apricot
tops the list as my first choice.
Poaching: Place apricotspeeled or unpeeled, whole or halvedin
barely simmering fruit juice, cover, and cook until tender. Add whole
cloves or a cinnamon stick to the liquid for extra flavor. Once the
apricots are poached, the liquid can be cooked down to produce a sauce.
Cooking time: 5 to 7 minutes.
Reconstituting dried apricots: Serve dried apricots for breakfast
or dessert, at any time of year. Simmer them in a small amount of water,
white wine, or fruit juice until tender. Cooking time: 15 minutes.
Here is my recipe for apricot pie.
Heat oven to 350 Degrees F.
You will need a 2 crust pie crust of your choice. ( I make it with a
whole wheat or soyflour pie crust.)
Filling ingredients:
1 tablespoon Whole wheat flour or Corn Starch
2 tablespoons butter, cut into small bits.
3 cups apricots, washed, pitted, sliced (some may prefer to remove the
peel but we like the peel included and makes for more fiber and doesn't
alter the taste.)
2/3 cup brown sugar or 1.5 tbsp. whole stevia leaf powder or 1/4 tsp.
white stevia extract (powder)
Mix together flour and sugar, then add apricots and mix until apricots
are well coated with mixture. Place apricot mixture evenly in the pie
crust. Put butter bits all over the top of mixture. Wet edges of the
bottom crust, cover with upper crust and press the edges together. Place
pie pan/plate on cookie sheet and bake about 45 - 50 minutes taking care
to not over brown crust. Pie will be flavorful and not too sweet.
