I do hope your week has started on a good note. Terry's
question set me off on a research that was both frustrating and
rewarding. I was around, many years back, when the first wave of
propaganda went out about apricot pits and the damage they were doing
and watched as people were jailed for using them. I have to say, at that
time I was so into the traditional medical world that I believed
everything that was printed and spoken about apricot pits, on the news
channels, that I was not an objective reader or listener. I found those
same lies still being propagated today by the printed media, but I now
have a more open mind and know how to search out the truth. I have never
looked into anything that didn't have both good and bad in it and
apricot pits are no different but I found by corresponding with several
doctors outside this country that there is definitely more good than bad
and being used for healing many people today, outside the U.S....

QUESTION:
What can you tell me about apricot seeds
Thanks
Terry
ANSWER:
Thanks for this provocative question Terry!
Apricot seeds grow great trees that grow fantastic healthy fruits. But
you probably already know that. :-)
I personally have never consumed an apricot seed since I prefer the
fruit, but there has been a HUGE CONTROVERSY raging over the apricot
seed for years now. The most publicized being laetrile that is derived
from the seed. For centuries Chinese medicine has used the Apricot Seed
for a multitude of health reasons... In traditional Chinese medicine the
apricot seed is considered to have bitter, warm and slightly toxic
properties, and affects the Large Intestine and Lung meridians. It is
used to stop cough and wheezing, moistens the intestines and unblocks
the bowels.
Apricot seed contains a variety of amino acids and other substances,
including oleic and linoleic acid. One of the components of apricot
seed, amygdalin, has been shown to reduce the incidence and severity of
coughing. Animal tests have shown that an apricot seed decoction can
lower blood pressure, but as of this date these results have yet to be
duplicated in humans and may never happen in the U.S. since the FDA has banned the use. In addition, both raw and prepared versions of apricot seed
have demonstrated a laxative detoxing effect in humans. I will accept
the centuries of use in other countries as viable and worthy of using
apricot seeds for a healthy alternative!
Apricot seeds were used to successfully treat tumors as early as AD
502. Apricot oil has been used against tumors and ulcers in England
since the 1600s.
Man's chemical Laetrile - trade name laevo-mandelonitrile-beta-glucuronoside - a substance registered with
the U.S. Patent Office for the treatment of "disorders of intestinal
fermentation." This compound is chemically related to amygdalin, a
substance found naturally in the pits of apricots and various other
fruits. Man still can't do as well as nature but continue to believe
they can! As far as I'm concerned I wouldn't give much thought to using
this, man's chemical adulterated laetrile, if I was a doctor.
Laetrile, from the apricot seed, came under scrutiny many years ago as
it came to the forefront as an alternative cancer treatment and was
driven underground because the FDA (drug industry's puppet) made a big
fuss and was arresting doctors for using it on their cancer patients.
Since real Laetrile and many other substances used in alternative-cancer
treatments are found in nature, they cannot be patented. That means that
the majority, apricot pits included,
will never be tested according to FDA protocol. Consequently, they will
never be officially approved no matter how effective they may be.
Laetrile is among one of the best alternative treatments for cancer that
has ever been found. It does not work 100% of the time - It certainly
beats traditional therapies that only hold a 20% to 40% success rate!-
but studies show that Laetrile is significantly more effective than
radiation or chemotherapy. In clinics out of the United States that use
laetrile in cancer treatment it's said to be 70% - 80% effective!!!
One of the most publicized laetrile tests was the Laetrile study
conducted at Sloan-Kettering in the 1970s, before banning it. The final report stated there
was no evidence that Laetrile was effective. However, employees inside
Sloan-Kettering secretly sent copies of the actual lab reports to the
press that proved just the opposite. Dr. Ralph Moss, who was Assistant
Director of Public Affairs at Sloan-Kettering, was one of the
whistle-blowers and was fired because of it. The Sloan report was an
insult to truth and a prostitution of science that should be a shame to
SK. A well-documented account of this episode is the chapter entitled
"Genocide in Manhattan," in World without Cancer, by G. Edward Griffin.
It may well change your view regarding the integrity at Sloan-Kettering
institute as well. Dr. Moss has since become an advocate for the cancer
community by searching out world wide alternative as well as traditional
cancer treatments that work or don't work.
Some are still crossing the Mexican border from the U.S. to seek
laetrile therapy when other cancer treatments fail. Sadly most wait
until traditional therapy has been used and failed before seeking the alternative
and is too late in many cases...
The theory behind laetrile is; the apricot pit extract breaks down to
release CN, but only when in contact with Beta-glucuronidase, an enzyme
common to tumor cells. The CN- is released preferentially at tumor
sites, and kills malignant cells.
It is strongly claimed by apricot seed aficionados that when one eats
about 7-9 apricot seeds per day they can never develop cancer, just as
one can never get scurvy if they have an orange every day. 30 - 60 seeds
a day for existing cancer is said to be effective...These should not be
swallowed whole!!! A typical dose of apricot seed consists of 3-9 grams
of seed, crushed and used with water as a decoction. Apricot seed can
also be consumed raw, parched or steamed.
The American Herbal Products Association has given it a class 3 rating,
meaning that any products containing apricot seed should have the
following labeling: To be used only under the supervision of an expert
qualified in the appropriate use of this substance. Apricot seed also is
not recommended for use by children.
You can't get raw apricot seeds in your health food store, only sun
dried ones, which have all the important enzymes killed off making them
ineffective.
Most of the people that already have cancer clusters in their body, who
eat the apricot seeds and/or take the vitamin b17 in tablet form show
near to complete tumor regression. Although cancer patients may get rid
of their cancer, they also have the problem of the organ damage that the
cancer caused. (This is another issue where other herbs and remedies are
necessary for proper organ regeneration.) Of course when a person's body
is completely eaten up by cancer, the apricot seeds and its extract
(laetrile and vitamin b17) will most likely prolong their life many
times longer than chemotherapy and possibly not completely save them.
However in many cases high levels of injectable laetrile will help a
great deal with the pain control.
I personally feel that Apricot seed use should be monitored by an herbal
smart practitioner and not for experimentation without supervision as
there can be grave consequences when overused or abused. Apricot seed is
toxic, but what amount has not been ascertained, therefore large doses
should be avoided until you can determine what is toxic to you,
requiring supervision.
Overdosing can lead to dizziness, vomiting and diarrhea and in a few
cases have resulted in death. I also know, should I ever again
be diagnosed
with cancer, alternative treatments will be my choice and would
include apricot seeds?
I hope this answers your question.

ACRES OF DIAMONDS
A century ago, Russell Conwell traveled the United States with a speech
he called, "Acres of Diamonds." He told of a young man who studied at
Yale to become a mining engineer. Upon graduation, "gold fever" struck
him and he set off to California to seek his fortune.
Yale had offered him a position as an instructor, which he turned down.
He persuaded his mother to sell their Massachusetts farm and accompany
him. But the trip was futile as he found no gold and eventually accepted
a job in Minnesota working for a mining company -- at a lower salary
than he would have received at Yale.
More interesting is that the man who bought the family farm from the
widowed mother was harvesting potatoes one day. As he slid a heavy
bushel through an opening in the stone wall, he noticed a shiny stone.
He had it assayed and learned it was native silver. The farm was sitting
on a fortune in silver!
Why had the mining engineer, who had undoubtedly passed by that same
rock and others like it hundreds of times, not discovered the ore? Could
it be that he never dreamed a treasure could be found so easily? Was it
because he believed that one must go elsewhere to fulfill a dream?
What we are seeking may be found right where we are! There are certainly
times to make life changes, but sometimes we must simply change our
thinking. What you seek (happiness, security, fulfillment, challenge)
may be at your fingertips, though yet unseen.
There may be hidden potential in your present job, your current
relationships or the location in which you live. The answers to your
dreams may be found at your fingertips if you only believe it is
possible. Before making that big life change, look carefully around. You
may be sitting on acres of diamonds!

Healthy Fortunella crassifolia!
I'm missing those nice little orange, yellow and greenish fruits that
use to grow in our back yard in Southern California. It was easy to walk
out and pull a few off the tree and eat them as a snack during the day
or put in a bag to take to work for a morning or afternoon snack. We had
two different types; the normal kumquat ? small yellowish orange colored
- and Limequates ? greenish yellow color, both the shape and size of
bird eggs - growing in our back yard that were absolutely refreshing and
different and were ready for picking throughout the winter months. I
loved slicing them into fruit salads as well as fresh off the trees as a
snack. Tangy insides with a sweet peel, so different from other citrus
that require peeling before eating.
Kumquats, also called Cumquat, kinkan or Fortunella
crassifolia or as Chinese call them Gold Oranges, are the
fruits that are produced from small family of evergreen trees, similar
to an orange tree, that grows to a height of 10 - 15 feet. Our kumquat
and limequat trees were miniature and only about 5 feet tall but never
failed to be loaded with fruit? Kumquats are truly the tiny jewels of
the citrus kingdom. The bite-size fruit, which are eaten skin and all is
a wonderful combination of tangy and sweet flavors unique to themselves.
The seeds, similar to the seed of the orange with a distinctive green
color, should not be eaten, but contain pectin, which can be removed by
boiling for use in making jams and jellies.
Kumquat is a small little fruit that is said to be native to China and
Indochina, where the trees can grow up to 10ft, and are much appreciated
for their beauty and fruits. Dwarf kumquat trees are specially
cultivated in pots for the Chinese New Year celebrations, when its
fruits are used as edible decorations. In the U.S. they are mostly
cultivated in California, Florida and the Gulf Coast. Slightly bigger
than a Brazil nut, they have a thick sweet peel and a tart pulp.
Excellent in marmalades, jellies, crystallized, minced or whole. They
make an interesting addition to salads or in sweet and sour dishes.
Has the minerals that most citrus contain such as; Calcium, Iron,
Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese,
Selenium along with the Vitamins C, B-6, B-12, A, E, folic acid, niacin,
Thiamin and riboflavin. Making it very citrus but also a calming
soothing food. So when you are out of sorts have a few kumquats!
Winter fruits that can brighten up a dreary winter day. Compact and
bite-sized, you can eat kumquats as you would a grape. Just wash them
and pop in your mouth. They're also nice in salads or as a garnish in
drinks. They have a tangy citrus flavor and can be used in any dish that
calls for oranges or grapefruit. Kumquats are high in fiber and vitamin
C. There are variations of kumquats such as orangequats, lemonquats,
and limequats.
So no recipes today as we prefer them raw!
If you live in an area where you are privy to having access to the
kumquat family take advantage of these healthy little citrus fruits.
