QUESTION:
A distressed friend has just called to tell me he been diagnosed with
hemachromatosis. He is a twin brother to a sister (46 yrs) who was
diagnosed in November. At her prompting he was tested so there does not
seem to have been prevailing symptoms leading to diagnosis.
What is the prognosis ? Treatment ? Dietary action or alternative
treatments ?
Thank you for your help.
Dennis
ANSWER:
Dennis, tell your friend to not stress out. This has become a common
occurrence, if my questions are an indication of that and they usually
are. I receive at least 2 or 3 questions regarding Hemochromatosis a
month.
Tell your friend if he controls his Hemochromatosis properly it will not
shorten his life and can make him healthier in the long run... With
watching what he eats and a few guidelines - listed later here - he can
do fine! He is fortunate that it was discovered before problems arose
that could be life threatening. Now he has a chance of easily
controlling it preventing those things from happening...
Hemochromatosis' danger is in iron build up in the liver, which can be a
danger if not attended to properly and soon. That necessitates cleansing
the liver with a cleansing
coffee enema once a week and get blood letting done one or two times
a week for best control. Yes it is an inconvenience but will become easy
and normal protocol with time...
Hemochromatosis isn't a correctable problem for anyone I've ever known
but those that do the coffee enema's to cleanse the liver and kidneys
and get the blood letting done in a timely manner with a few
modifications for each person, will live a long and energy driven life.
Every food imaginable has iron in it so it's impossible to not eat foods
with iron... But red meats should be limited to very small portions or
none at all as it tends to stress the liver and make the kidneys work
harder, which needs to be avoided with Hemochromatosis. Fresh fruits and
vegetables benefit the liver more than processed foods. So he needs to
make sure he gets sufficient Vitamin B, not in pill form!
Since the problem is said to lie within the small intestines inability
to work properly and distribute iron properly, he must make sure the
intestinal system has sufficient
probiotics to work as efficiently as possible. That should include
taking probiotics daily to assure that is done! No, it will not correct
the problem just keep it from becoming life threatening. With those
recommendations a diet can be as normal as anyone else's. Special diets,
other than avoiding red meat, raw or improperly cooked sea food,
fortified cereals and alcohol, have not been found to increase or
decrease the Hemochromatosis problem! Do not eat food cooked with
iron cookware as food absorbs the iron from them and can add to the
problem!
Here are guidelines that most likely can assure longevity with
Hemochromatosis;
Optimum Treatment is blood removal once or twice a week at the blood
bank. Keep well hydrated and DO NOT skip meals. Blood letting
treatment is inexpensive or free when utilizing the blood bank
and is effective. This should be done providing the hemoglobin is 10
or higher and a hematocrit of 30 or higher a full unit of blood should
be drawn off once or twice a week. It will become apparent if he
necessitates one or two units as the problem progresses... The blood
is usable as donor blood when it meets all safety criteria. Such
protocol will return a person to a normal lifespan and reverse most if
not all symptoms, when followed routinely.
The patient who tests with elevated liver enzymes, as most with
hemochromatosis do, must avoid Tylenol or products containing Tylenol
altogether. Avoid all alcohol.
Do NOT not take vitamin C in pill form. Vitamin C as a pill has
been found to mobilize stored iron into the heart muscle where it sets
up heart rhythm disturbances. It can also cause people to over absorb
iron from their ordinary diets. And can fire the iron that is stored in
the joints and makes arthritis worse. The source for vitamin C should
be liquid, powder and uncooked foods. He should be taking the
ultimate 84 complete minerals and the plant based
MegaNutrients to help each cell of his body function properly making
it easier for him to control the problem without developing life
threatening diseases, when consumed daily as directed.
DO NOT eat or handle raw seafood. Iron overloaded patients should
also not walk on beaches barefoot. This is because of a bacterium common
in all sea water called Vibrio vulnificus. This
bacterium when it encounters stored iron is catastrophically toxic.
Every year it is the cause of death and maiming when an undiagnosed iron
overloaded patient comes in contact with this bacteria, caused from that
barefoot walk on the beach.
Drinking tea can help inhibit iron absorption. Tannin is the
blocking agent in teas. DO NOT take this as a replacement for protocol
treatment!!! IT ISN'T! Taking supplements that contain tannin is also
good providing it isn't in pill form. Pill supplements of all types
tend to be bound with agents that do not work efficiently and can cause
iron overloaded people to become more so creating diabetes, heart
trouble, arthritis, liver disease, neurological problems, depression, no
sex drive, infertility, and cancer.
Preventing liver cancer should be the Hemochromatosis person's primary
goal. One with Hemochromatosis should avoid medications where
possible and protect the liver. The physicians should use medications
only in EXTREME emergencies!
I hope this helps,
Lena

WAY TO RESULTS
Melodie Hartline relates in Reader's Digest (September 1996) that in her
job as an employee of a jewelry store, she often arranged for engaged
couples to have their wedding bands engraved with something special. She
once asked a bride-to-be what she would like inscribed inside her
fiancés ring.
"We aren't very romantic," she replied. Then she related that they
were marrying on her fiancés birthday so he wouldn't forget the date!
Melodie persisted, "Isn't there something you'll want him to remember as
he looks inside his ring?"
There sure is," she said. And that's how "Put it back on!" came to be
inscribed inside her husband's ring.
Perhaps she was trying to "help along" her husband's commitment to the
relationship?.
Catherine, from Scotland, may have wanted to help along her lover's
commitment for several decades. And finally, her 68-year-old boyfriend,
George, proposed after 44 years of courtship. Why the wait? "He is a bit
shy, you know," Catherine said.
At the heart of any meaningful relationship is commitment. Further,
commitment is vital to the success of any endeavor. Happy people are
committed people. They commit to other people, they commit to
themselves, they commit to God, and they commit to their dreams. They
know that nothing is possible without firm resolve.
Author Ken Blanchard has said, "There's a difference between interest
and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it
only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you
accept no excuses - only results."
What about you? Are you ready for results?

FOOD OF THE WEEK
=================
The Really Healthy Disease Proofing Vegetable!
If you've read all the "Food Of The Week" columns you can see how fruits
and vegetables are disease fighters extraordinaire!
I advocate eating at least 50% to 60% of your foods
as raw fruits and vegetables daily to get the maximum nutritional value
out of them.
When it comes to nutritional value, broccoli is at the top of the list.
It is rich in vitamins, high in fiber, low in calories and contains as
much calcium as milk and much healthier. By including broccoli regularly
in your diet you can reduce and prevent ailments like cancer, diabetes,
osteoporosis and heart disease.
Want to know how to beat prostate cancer? Your physician will probably
tell you to take prescription drugs. That's the pharmaceutical industry
trained doctor's answer who doesn't know better! For a dual killer of
those nasty illnesses mix tomato and broccoli, said to help reverse
breast cancer, colon cancer, leukemia and other cancers of the body.
Why not something that is safer that your body is built to accept 100%
and is proving to be far better for fighting diseases.
This green vegetable that looks like a bush, should be on everyone's
plate on a regular basis, if they wish to stay healthy! Broccoli has
been around for more than 2000 years. During the 16th century, the plant
was grown in Italy and France. It began to be commercially grown in the
United States in the 1920s. The word "broccoli" derives from the
Italian 'Brocco' meaning arm branch. Broccoli is related to
cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. The most common type of
broccoli sold in the U.S. is called sprouting, or Italian green,
broccoli; its light-green stalks are topped by umbrella-shaped clusters
of purplish-green florets. It is also known as Calabrese, after the
Italian province of Calabria, where it was first grown. Other broccoli
types are:
Broccolini: a cross between broccoli and
Chinese kale.
Broccoflower: a cross between broccoli and cauliflower, comes in a
single large head, like cauliflower, but is green rather than white.
Broccoli sprouts: a particularly concentrated source of
sulforaphane. They're expensive, but a little goes a long way.
Broccoli is an antioxidant rich food filled with the minerals Calcium,
Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese
and Selenium. Rich in vitamins such as; Vitamin C, Thiamin, Riboflavin,
Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Vitamin B-6, Folate, Folic acid, Vitamin B-12,
Vitamin A, Retinol and Vitamin E. broccoli really delivers in the
nutrition department.
A University of Illinois-Urbana study found that rats eating a
combination of broccoli and tomatoes had a lower rate of tumor growth
than rats eating broccoli or tomatoes separately. Researcher John
Erdman said the two foods bring out the best in each other, and maximize
the cancer-fighting effect of the nutrients they contain. You can mix
the two for optimum illness fighters!
When choosing broccoli in the market, select organic heads that
have tight and compact bud clusters with an even dark color. The stems
should be a lighter green than the buds and easy to pierce with a
fingernail. Avoid stalks with yellowed or open bud clusters and stems
that are hard and dry. Broccoli can be stored, unwashed, in a plastic
bag in the refrigerator crisper for days. Before use, wash by rinsing in
purified/filtered water with a splash of vinegar for disinfectant.
Storing broccoli: Refrigeration slows the
conversion of sugar to lignin, thereby preserving texture and flavor;
keeping broccoli chilled also protects vitamin C content. Store broccoli
in an open plastic bag in the refrigerator crisper, which will provide
the right balance of humidity and oxygen. Do not wash broccoli before
storing; although it needs moisture to remain fresh, any water on its
surface will encourage spoilage. Fresh broccoli is best if used within a
day or two of purchase, but it will keep for up to four days in a
crisper. Once cooked, any leftovers may be refrigerated for two to three
days in a tightly covered container.
Our favorite ways of eating broccoli are steamed with a splash of
seasoned rice vinegar, or raw with other veggies as a salad with lemon
juice with virgin olive oil or flax seed oil as dressing. Also I like
raw broccoli flowerets with sliced tomatoes and sliced sweet onions.
Grandchildren like them with a bit of ranch dressing, which I don't
think of as healthy, but a little once in a while isn't going to kill
them and it gets them to eat the broccoli! I try to make Ranch dressing
fresh so it's not quite as lethal.
Here is a great recipe:
Broccoli with Garlic
1 bunch of broccoli, OR 1 pound of frozen chopped broccoli
2 medium fresh tomatoes (cut into bite size pieces)
6 garlic cloves
1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
2 tablespoons purified/filtered water
1/4 teaspoon hot (cayenne) pepper (optional)
Wash broccoli and cut into small florets. Cut the tender parts of the
stem into smallish cubes or save add to stew or make Broccoli Slaw.
Steam broccoli in until barely tender and still bright green. Don't
overcook!
For all cruciferous, this is a very important guideline!
Place olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Chop or mince the
garlic. When the oil is hot, add sea salt, then the garlic.
Sauté
stirring frequently, just until the garlic starts to soften.
Quickly add the water, and the cayenne if desired. Turn heat low and
simmer for a couple of minutes.
Place the broccoli and fresh tomatoes in a large glass or crockery
serving bowl. Pour the garlic mixture over it, mixing gently to coat
each piece evenly. Serve and enjoy.
Chill leftovers and add to salad the next day.
Now go get some broccoli for your next meal, enjoy and know you are
eating for health!
