QUESTION:
Hi Lena,
I am a 40 year old male and my latest cholesterol
reading was 276 and my doctor is trying to force me to take a
cholesterol lowering prescription, which I do not wish to do. I filled
his first prescription for Lipitor but I read the insert at all the bad
side effects and in small print said; "Has not been shown to prevent
or protect from heart disease or stroke." So I figured my chances of
being healthy were greater without it than with it and it still sits on
my counter unopened… I also read one of your articles that stated that
"60 plus percent of people who die from heart attack, heart disease or stroke have
normal to low cholesterol readings," which enforced my thoughts at not
taking the drugs… He is so pushing for me to take it and he told me that
if he had the authority he would beat me about the head and shoulders
until I softened my head up to understand my risk of heart attack caused
by the cholesterol. I guess he's never read the insert that goes
with the drug… Does he have the right to make such a nasty statement to
me and
should I cave in and take the medication with this reading?
Thanks,
Sal
ANSWER:
Hi Sal,
Are you sure you aren't seeing a Prescott Arizona
VA doctor? He sounds very much like the one that has tried to force my
husband to take his cholesterol medications for the last few years and
made a statement very much like your doctor did…. I know how hard it is
to stand up to a doctor and say, "This is my body and I will put into
it or not put into it what I please." That freedom comes about
when you realize they are only human and not God to strike you dead if
you don't obey them... I'm not a doctor nor do I want you to think I
know everything as I don't anymore than any other person...
Does he have the right to use that strong a
message? If he wants he can say whatever he pleases just as you have
the right to say no… Intimidation works in 99% of people and they know
it...
Should you cave in? I don't believe so, but
it's your decision to make and not mine.
I believe that every person has a cholesterol
number that is going to vary according to what his/her body requires.
Cholesterol is required to have a healthy body and too low is very
dangerous and bad for anyone, just as really too high probably is. I use
to - occasionally, 2 or 3 a year - draw blood from a patient who had
milky-reddish (fatty) blood and know that was bad and I believe whatever
it takes to bring that down should be done, if that person is
ascertained to not be under undue stress or pain and a second blood draw
in a week confirms exaggerated level… In my years in the office I almost never saw
anyone with a cholesterol count that the drug industry is now trying to
achieve "150 or below"… So that fact alone would lead me to believe that
anything less than 150 is too low and anything from 200 to 325 is
normal, because we didn't have so many people dying with heart attacks
and strokes, which began happening in the last 20 years… I believe some
of that is from the arthritis pain drugs but we are going to see a rise
like you can't believe shortly, caused by the increased usage of
cholesterol drugs in the last few years… Because the side-effect damage
is not always seen right away a person thinks the medication isn't
hurting them. That happens gradually in most...
Let me you tell you about my husband's experiences
and it might help you can make your decision to take the drug or not; In
his mid thirties his cholesterol reading was over 800 and his triglycerides were 1200. That is grossly out of line for anyone and
should not be that high, but he was going through a time with kidney
stones and the stress and pain from that took its toll. Pain can do that
as can other stress factors and he needed it lowered. This was at the
very beginning of cholesterol lowering medication being on the market
and he took the medication for a few months until I had to triage calls
from patients in our office that was experiencing horrific side effects
after starting the cholesterol lowering drugs, so I encouraged him to
stop taking the drug, which he did… At that point his cholesterol was
down to 340 with a combination of diet changes and the medications. That
was in the early 80's when cholesterol drugs were just coming to be the
money maker they are. The doctor I worked with at that time refused to
prescribe the drugs to any of his patients by the end of the first year
- unless their levels were way over the top -
watching what was happening to those patients after taking the drugs
convinced him... Lots
of muscle and tendon wasting with severe pain and increased arthritis
cases… Those are the short term side effects...
I wish I had known about the
liquid total minerals at that time as some of that could have been
eliminated and the lingering damage that was caused…
Anyway, my husband's cholesterol has run anywhere
from 270 to 360 ever since, that's 35 years now. Last year his doctor
said he heard a bruit (lessened blood flow in the carotid artery) and
wanted to rush him into surgery (roto rooter the artery) but we first
wanted to see an arterial specialist who first did an Ultrasound and MRI,
at our insistence, and found that my husbands arteries are cleaner than
most with no plaque build up. His opinion was that the artery may have
been a bit kinked when the doctor listened to it. He said that is a
frequent occurrence. Now I wonder how many have had an endarterectomy
without needing it… I don't believe my husband is all that unique in
this happening, bearing out what the doctor I worked for believed, as do
I, cholesterol isn't a marker for heart disease, which they claim in
advertising yet disclaim on the fliers that accompany the drug.
Scientists have written that inflammation is a stronger reason not
cholesterol, but the drug companies can't afford to believe them as it
would take billions of dollars out of their pockets.
Pay attention to your mouth and sinus health
sooner than cholesterol lowering. See your dentist and make sure your
gums are healthy and don't go for root canals as infection grows in the
canal after surgery and makes for a lingering inflammation that can
reach your heart and arteries. Same with a sinus infection make sure
that the sinuses are healthy and drain properly as they too can harbor
bacteria/virus/fungal infections… There are some healthy alternatives to
doing both and for anyone wanting to know what
contact me… Take care of that and don’t worry so much about
cholesterol. Here is a booklet written by scientist friend who worked in
the pharmaceutical end of science but left for more independent studies…

MOTIVATOR
~^~^~^~^~^~^
LET IT SHINE!
While attending a conference, I returned to my motel room late one
evening. The overhead light outside my door was burned out and I had
difficulty finding the keyhole. When I managed to open the door, I felt
around the wall for a light switch. I found a plate where a switch was
once installed...but no switch.
Not discouraged easily, I remembered spotting a lamp by the bed when I
deposited my luggage earlier in the day. I found the bed in the dark and
felt around until I found the lamp, but when I switched it on, nothing
happened! Now what?
Though I knew that it was dark outside my window since the outdoor light
was broken, I thought that perhaps if I opened the curtains I might be
able to use the light from the street to find another lamp. So I made my
way slowly across the room to the drapes and...no drawstring! (Have you
ever had days like that?)
I finally stumbled around until I found a desk lamp that actually
worked! That evening I discovered in a whole new way just how dark the
world can be and how necessary light is.
But even more necessary than physical light is the light that shines
from people -- that light which illumines these dark recesses of the
spirit and warms the heart. The light of love and compassion and faith.
Because, for many people, the world is a dark and lonely place.
One December I received a letter from a reader in Mexico City who said
this about the darkness around her: "Yesterday I bought a Christmas
decoration. It's a plastic star, maybe 18 inches across, strung with
small white and gold Christmas lights. I hung it in my living room
window last night. It looks so beautiful from outside -- even better
than I had hoped! I live on the second floor of a five-story government
housing project building. The building where I live is tucked away where
few people go. Not a whole lot of folks see my lighted star. As long as
I have it plugged in, that star shines bravely and brightly out into the
cold night. It shines on regardless of whether anyone is around to see
it or not. And I know that anyone who does see it must be heartened by
it -- it's that lovely.
"I got to thinking, 'Isn't that the way we should be? Shouldn't our
lives in some way shine out into the cold night -- regardless of whether
or not anyone admires them? It's certainly nice when someone notices us
and is encouraged or heartened. But, after all, isn't it the shining
itself that is most important?'"
It is the shining that is important, whether or not you feel as if you
are making a difference. For someone today just may be stumbling in
discouragement or sadness or fear and in need of some light.
So let your light shine. Whatever light you offer may be a beacon of
hope and encouragement in someone's darkness. And if you feel that your
light is no more than a candle in a forest, remember this -- there isn't
enough darkness in all the world to put out the light of one small
candle.
Will you let your light shine?

FOOD OF THE WEEK

Fuzzy Edible Little Egg Shaped Yang Tao!
These days it's hard to find any food with enough
nutrients to really help us without eating a truck load, but this one
small fuzzy is the highest nutrient value fruit and can help keep your
nutrient rich…
A tiny fruit with a great texture and taste and goes with just about
anything. Kiwi, also called Chinese gooseberry and yang tao for its
edible fruit. The small, oval fruit has a thin brownish-green skin with
a fuzzy inedible surface. The flesh, which is a distinctive attractive
green, with tiny purplish seeds surrounding a white core, may be eaten
raw or cooked.
History: Known as the Chinese gooseberry,
originated and began in the Chang Kiang Valley of China. When taken to
New Zealand in 1906 was renamed after their national treasure, the kiwi
bird, which, interestingly, is a fuzzy brown bird that does not actually
fly. Considered a delicacy by the great Khans who relished the fruit's
brilliant flavor and emerald-green color. Knowledge of the fruit
expanded to other countries in the mid 1800s to 1900s.
A collector for the Royal Horticultural Society of
Britain send samples home in 1847, and another send seeds to England in
1900. Plants were first exported from China to the United States in
1904. Kiwifruit is available worldwide today and is produced in New
Zealand, the United States, Italy, Japan, France, Greece, Spain,
Australia, and Chile.
The kiwi is technically a berry, is normally about
3 inches long and weighs about 2.5 ounces. When it is harvested, the
pickers wear cotton gloves to make sure that the fruit is not damaged.
Inside it is a symmetrical combination of dark green fruit, and black
seeds. The conversion of starch into sugar keeps on going after harvest
so it keeps getting riper and riper.
A study conducted at Rutgers University evaluated
the nutritional value of fruits to determine--ounce for ounce--which
provides the most nutrition. The findings, published in the October 1997
issue of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, ranked
popular fruits on the basis of the amount of the daily value they
provide per 100 grams of fruits. At the top of the list was kiwifruit.
When you are choosing a kiwi, look for firm,
unblemished fruit. Size doesn't matter. If it is ripe, the outside of
the fruit should give way to slight pressure. If it doesn't give a
little, it isn't ready to eat. You can speed up the ripening process by
putting it in a vented plastic bag with an apple or a banana and leaving
it out on the kitchen counter.
One tiny Kiwi has less then 50 calories - is the most nutrient dense
of all the major fruits.
Low in fat is Sodium-free, Cholesterol-free, High
in fiber and High in vitamin C. A great source of Vitamin E, folate (B
vitamin), potassium and magnesium... The kiwi also contains lutein, a
phytochemical found in green plant foods that scientists say reduces the
risk of cancer, heart disease and macular degeneration, which is
creating epidemic proportion of blindness in the over 40 generation.
Research conducted by the University of Oslo in
Norway reveals that consuming two to three kiwifruit per day can work to
thin blood, reduce clotting and lower fat in the blood that can cause
blockage, without negatively affecting cholesterol levels. Like aspirin,
eating two kiwifruit a day promotes heart health. In short, kiwifruit
consumption has similar effects to the daily dosage of aspirin
recommended by physicians to improve heart health.
Findings of a 2003 study conducted by the
internationally renowned Rowett Research Institute in the United Kingdom
found that eating kiwifruit daily can provide substantial protection
against the kind of DNA damage that may cause cancer.
Another interesting property of kiwi is an enzyme called actinidin that
turns this fruit into an excellent meat tenderizer. Just puree fresh
kiwi and use it as a marinade for beef, poultry or pork. Let it stand
about 30 minutes before cooking. Or, if you want to tenderize the meat
without flavoring it, you can just cut the fruit in half and rub it over
the meat before cooking. Because of this enzyme, you cannot use kiwi in
foods like gelatin unless you poach it very briefly to deactivate the
enzyme. It must also be briefly poached before using it with any dairy
products like ice cream or frozen yogurt because otherwise it will
impart a strange flavor, but not dangerous to your health.
Due to California kiwifruit's late fall harvest,
fresh kiwifruit is available to U.S. and Canadian consumers during the
winter months, an uncommon time for the "homegrown" fresh fruits. With
proper storage and handling, California kiwifruit is available for up to
eight months - from October through May.
Our favorite way of eating Kiwi is fresh and raw.
There are recipes using Kiwi cooked but I have never tried them so I
cannot recommend one…
