QUESTION:
I'm a 56 year-old male and just had my physical and everything was okay
except for one test, PSA was 8, and the doctor wants me to have a
biopsy. What is your opinion? What is a PSA? Is a Positive PSA
dangerous? What are the normal levels? What does an abnormal reading
really mean?
Bob
ANSWER:
Lot of questions there Bob but thankfully simple to answer. Understand I
am not a man and I know that I cannot think like a man, but I would hope
that you are not too bummed out over that reading as you will note it is
listed as slightly elevated. That can occur from several areas of your
habits and/or mean the beginning of something or not? When you say all
else was normal I'm assuming you had no enlarged prostate, viral
infection or any other reason to be alarmed? Poor diet (fatty, processed
and/or junk foods) and/or lack of sufficient water intake can also
contribute to those slightly elevated readings.
National Cancer Institute (NCI) PSA range is:
- Normal - 0 to 4 nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml)
- Slightly Elevated - 4 to 10 ng/ml
- Moderately Elevated - 10 to 20 ng/ml
- Highly Elevated - more than 20 ng/ml
According to NCI guidelines, PSA false positive results occur mostly in
men who are 50 or older. In this age group, about 15 of every 100 men
tested will have PSA levels in the slightly elevated range or higher. Of
those 15, only three will actually have cancer. So you see you probably
have nothing to worry about. Can't say absolutely, but with these
figures it is highly unlikely..
That said, a single elevated PSA reading should not prompt a biopsy
without confirmation of cancer possibility from other screening methods
and since all other findings seem normal I would simply wait and repeat
the PSA in three to six months... Ask your doctor to do that. I realize
that with the litigious society today doctors are way overly cautious,
anyway I'm hoping that's all he is, but they need to take into
consideration the dangers of unnecessary biopsy's especially in that
area, right?
What that means is, don't let the first PSA abnormal test throw you into
believing you have cancer! The chances are greater that it isn't? In the
meantime work at a healthy diet and supplement with minerals that have
proven to be lacking of in men with prostate cancer. Those being zinc,
calcium, potassium and selenium along with Vitamin E. I suggest a
balance of minerals as I believe, as do a lot of alternative
practitioner, if you are lacking in a few minerals you are probably
lacking in many creating a need to balance your all around minerals and
make it less likely to have a false positives or even prevent the
likelyhood of a high PSA becoming cancer. You body's blood plasma should
be made up of certain mineral balance and when it is not balanced you
end up ill, sooner or later?
Watch the fat intake in your diet as men eating high fat diets are twice
as likely to develop cancer in all areas but specifically prostate. Add
an Omega3 supplement to your daily diet, sadly by eating fish everyday
you can build up dangerous metal overload, which isn't good! Studies
have shown a protective effect of omega-3 fatty acids in inhibiting the
growth of the androgen-insensitive DU-145 human prostate adenocarcinoma
cells, so I suggest a supplement and fish no more than twice a week.
Flax seed is a great way of getting Omega3's as well?
I don't want you to think I'm here just to sell you something but I
happen to be very partial to Wayne Garland and his fabulous master
formulas developed after he was given three months to live 13 years
ago?In his quest to live a few weeks longer he found cancer-free healing
and is now passing along those healing formulas to anyone who is
interested? Once cancer-free he went to school to become a naturopath
and herbologist at the University of Shanghai in China, where his
formulas originated with the doctors there? Check out this

I hope this helps answer you questions and put your mind at ease.

WAY TO RESULTS
Melodie Hartline relates in Reader's Digest (September 1996) that in her
job as an employee of a jewelry store, she often arranged for engaged
couples to have their wedding bands engraved with something special. She
once asked a bride-to-be what she would like inscribed inside her
fiancés ring.
"We aren't very romantic," she replied. Then she related that they
were marrying on her fiancés birthday so he wouldn't forget the date!
Melodie persisted, "Isn't there something you'll want him to remember as
he looks inside his ring?"
There sure is," she said. And that's how "Put it back on!" came to be
inscribed inside her husband's ring.
Perhaps she was trying to "help along" her husband's commitment to the
relationship?.
Catherine, from Scotland, may have wanted to help along her lover's
commitment for several decades. And finally, her 68-year-old boyfriend,
George, proposed after 44 years of courtship. Why the wait? "He is a bit
shy, you know," Catherine said.
At the heart of any meaningful relationship is commitment. Further,
commitment is vital to the success of any endeavor. Happy people are
committed people. They commit to other people, they commit to
themselves, they commit to God, and they commit to their dreams. They
know that nothing is possible without firm resolve.
Author Ken Blanchard has said, "There's a difference between interest
and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it
only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you
accept no excuses - only results."
What about you? Are you ready for results?

FOOD OF THE WEEK

The Ultimate Pineapple!
Christopher Columbus discovered this delectable food growing on the
island of Guadeloupe in 1493 and took them back to Spain. They became
very popular in Europe by the 1600s.
Bromelain has been used for hundreds of years as a digestive aid,
and to treat inflammation and other health problems. Recently, bromelain
has been investigated for possible anticancer activity and now studies
show it to contain protease, that is a great blood thinner cholesterol
lowering agent, thereby preventing heart disease. Now all these will
require daily consumption of pineapple and a very large portion.
The exceptional juiciness and vibrant tropical flavor of pineapple that
balances the tastes of sweet and tart make them only second to bananas
as America's favorite tropical fruit. Although the season for pineapple
runs from March through June, they are available year-round in local
markets.
Pineapple was a culinary favorite of the fierce Carib Indians who lived
on islands in the sea that still bears their name.
High in fiber and very rich in minerals and vitamins: raw pineapple
contains;
Calcium, a mineral, is used for building bones and teeth and in
maintaining bone strength. Calcium is also used in muscle contraction,
blood clotting, and maintenance of cell membranes.
Iron, Necessary for production hemoglobin, and oxygenation of red
blood cells, builds up blood quality, and increases resistance as well
as increasing energy production.
Magnesium, Key substance in proper functioning of nerves and
muscles and healthy maintenance of bones. Helps protect the arterial
lining from the stress of sudden blood pressure changes.
Phosphorus, Essential for utilization of carbohydrate, fats and
proteins for growth, maintenance, repair of cells, and energy
production. Necessary for proper skeletal growth, tooth development,
kidney functioning and transference of nerve impulses.
Potassium, Essential for muscles, nerves and heart. Aids in
proper maintenance of mineral balance of blood, as well as stable blood
pressure. Works with sodium to regulate the body's water balance.
Sodium, The mineral is needed to maintain proper water balance
and blood pH. The mineral aids in the transmission of nerve impulses,
production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, muscle function and
immune system maintenance.
Zinc, important in prostate gland functions and the growth of
reproductive organs. The mineralization of bone, a healthy immune
system, the digestion of proteins, the acuity of taste and smell,
detoxification of free radical promoting metals, collagen formation and
wound healing, all depend on zinc. It assists in the transportation of
vitamin A in the blood. Sufficient intake and absorption of zinc are
needed to maintain the proper concentration of vitamin E in the blood.
Copper, its functions involve the development and maintenance of
the cardiovascular, skeletal and the nervous system, including the
brain. The development and maintenance of the red blood cells and
healthy skin and hair also depend upon copper. Found in all the tissues,
the mineral is most concentrated in the brain, heart, kidney, and liver.
Manganese, essential cofactor in a number of enzymes important in
energy production and antioxidant defenses.
Selenium, enhances the immune system, normal development of the
fetus during pregnancy, improving arthritic symptoms, and protecting the
skin from UV rays. A deficiency could result in birth defects, increased
risk of cancer, heart and liver diseases, Down's syndrome and
fibrocystic breast disease.
A host of vitamins;
Vitamin C Thiamin
Vitamin B1,
Riboflavin,
Niacin,
Pantothenic acid,
Vitamin B-6,
Folate,
Folic acid,
Vitamin B-12,
Vitamin A,
Retinol,
Vitamin A,
Vitamin E,
Tocopherol.
Along with Amino acids such as Tryptophan, Threonine, Isoleucine,
Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Cystine, Phenylalanine, Tyrosine, Valine,
Arginine,Histidine, Alanine, Aspartic acid, Glutamic acid, Glycine,
Proline and Serine.
Low in calories! 1 cup = 75 calories. Pineapple is best eaten alone
between meals or its enzymes will be used up digesting food.
Selecting, storing and using pineapple:
Look for pineapples that are heavy for their size. While larger
pineapples will have more edible flesh, there is usually no difference
in quality between a small and large size pineapple. Pineapples should
be free of soft spots, bruises and darkened -eyes, all of which may
indicate that the pineapple is past its prime. Pineapple stops ripening
as soon as it is picked, so choose fruit with a fragrant sweet smell at
the stem end. Avoid pineapple that smells musty, sour or fermented.
Pineapple can be left at room temperature for one or two days before
serving. While this process will not make the fruit any sweeter, it will
help it to become softer and more juicy. Since they are very perishable,
you should watch closely during storing period to ensure that they do
not spoil. After two days, if you are still not ready to consume the
pineapple, you should wrap it in a perforated plastic bag and store it
in the refrigerator where it will keep for a maximum of three to five
more days. Pineapple that has been cut up should be stored in the
refrigerator in an airtight container. It will stay fresher and retain
more taste and juiciness if you also place some liquid, preferably some
juice from the pineapple, in the container. Although pineapple can be
frozen, this process greatly affects its flavor.
Our favorite way of eating pineapple is fresh and raw, can't beat it for
great taste and enjoyment.
Word of caution: If you are taking blood thinners eat pineapple or drink
pineapple juice but watch your blood closely for too much thinning.
Enjoy this weeks favorite food!
