QUESTION:
 
I have struggled with depression for years. Until very recently I had no idea what kind of depression until I was told that I am bi-polar. Could that be why the prescriptions for depression never really worked for me? I just became pregnant and my doctor says I cannot start medication until the baby is born. Is there any natural alternative, for bi-polar disorder, that I can use during my pregnancy? I am still taking Prozac, as the doctors are concerned about post-partem depression.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.
 
Depression is not a lot of fun and comes in all forms. The scientific community agrees that depression is a chemical imbalance resulting in depression - a way of saying a mineral
Imbalance in the body is the culprit. But that is about the end of their agreement- Bi-polar being a depression that is said to be a chemical imbalance. I can only tell you what I've seen work and then you will have to be the one to decide if you want to try it.
 
First I would like to say that I've seen some nasty latent side effects in people who take Prozac, so I worry about you taking it.  It has not been tested in pregnant women to know what the affects will be on the fetus. Prozac also has a way of changing a person's personality into someone most long time friends and family do not recognize, so why risk it when there are natural alternatives? You would have to withdraw carefully from Prozac as it has grave withdrawal side effects. But I have my doubts about you taking Prozac straight through for something that isn't going to happen for another three months?
 
Now for the natural alternatives for depression. I have seen a couple of people with Bi-polar disease leave it completely behind. Wayne Garland has a list of dozens getting rid of depression with herbs and minerals? Ones that I know personally have been symptom free and prescription free for just over eight years, another for three years. One found relief from her depression by adding three supplements to her daily regimen, which costs much less than an anti-depression prescription.
 
Three things that can get you out of the doldrums and back into society as it has for both people mentioned above?

There are other herbs that are known to bring relief as well but I do not have personal experiences with any of them other than the Valarian Root and Kava Kava, which has worked as an antidepressant and relaxant. Kava Kava in the amount needed to correct depression should not be taken during pregnancy. But the very most important aspect to depression is to balance the minerals (chemicals) to correct the problem and not simply mask depression as prescriptions tend to do.
 
Diet and exercise is very important as well. Dairy and red meats tend to have an exacerbating effect on depression so it is a good idea to limit them or better yet do away with them.

Are You The Master Of Your Destiny?

How strong are you? 

I'm not asking if you can carry 150 lbs. of weight.  What I'm
after is your strength of character.  How resilient are you to
hang on to your dreams amidst the raging forces of discouragement
and criticisms? 

There are far too many individuals who never get to experience
the joy of attaining their desires because other people's
influence has significantly (and sometimes negatively) affected
their crucial decisions. 

Are there instances in your life when other people said that
you should not continue your plans because they're never gonna
work?  What did you do?  Did you continue your endeavors or did
you just follow their command?

If you always adhere to other's beliefs and opinions even though
they are contrary to yours, you're just torturing yourself.  It's
like you don't have a mind of your own.  You're like a shadow
following the moves of someone else.

You may listen to other people's advices, but never let them
control you.  If their advices would contribute to your
success and well being, then by all means follow them.  But
if they would hinder you and stray you away from what you
really want in life, then you've got to make a stand and
pursue your heart's aspirations.

Sure there would be criticisms.  But if you always avoid
them, then you will never be truly happy.

As one famous person said, "There is a sure way to avoid
criticisms, be nothing and do nothing.  This remedy never
fails."  True enough.

Take my case.

When I was in first year college, my dad wanted me to shift
my course to Physical Therapy because it was in demand in the
United States at that time.  But I wanted to continue my
studies in Accountancy.  I remained firm with my decision
and after some negotiations they finally gave in.

Then there's my love life.  Chinese tradition states that
Chinese people marry their own kind.  (No offense)  But I fell
madly in love with this Filipino girl.  Despite all the
criticisms, discouragement, and harsh words (pardon me), I
defended my love for her.  Right now we're going strong and
my relatives have respected my decision.

You see, if I have given up easily in any of the two scenarios,
I would've deprived myself of joy and contentment in my life.

Sometimes other people's words would cut like a knife.  But
never be disheartened.  Listen to the voice inside of you. 
We will never be able to satisfy everybody because each of
us is unique.  We have our own distinct traits and values.
Respect for each other's opinions should be upheld.

With that said, I would like to leave this final message that
sums it all up.  Follow your heart and happiness will follow.

A Scripps Clinic of San Diego researchers divided a group of 100 obese subjects into three equal groups: one group ate half a grapefruit before each meal, one group drank a glass of grapefruit juice before each meal, and one group was instructed not to eat any grapefruit or drink any grapefruit juice. Subjects followed their regimens for three months, while continuing to eat as they normally would.
 
What they found backs up the old claims of that old "grapefruit diet" and the claims that it helps lose weight. Those in the group that ate grapefruit with each meal lost an average of 3.6 pounds. Subjects in the grapefruit juice group lost an average of  3.3 pounds. A few of the subjects in both of these groups lost nearly 10 pounds. Meanwhile, the average weight loss in the group that consumed no grapefruit was less than one pound.
 
Those same researchers also now believe that grapefruit contains chemical properties that assist in the management of insulin levels - a potential boon to dieters and diabetics alike. At the beginning and the completion of the Scripps study, researchers measured the insulin and glucose levels of all subjects. When the test was over, those in the two grapefruit groups had lower levels of insulin and glucose than they did at the beginning, while levels in the non-grapefruit group were unchanged.
 
Grapefruit is rich in water-soluble fiber, which has been shown to enhance digestion while helping regulate the absorption of carbohydrates that would otherwise contribute to blood sugar spikes. It is also high in pectin, a soluble fiber that helps reduce cholesterol levels.
 
Grapefruit is a great and healthy food! WARNING: medications should not be taken within at least an hour of eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice as some medication affects are enhanced when combined?
 
So get those grapefruit peeled and eaten!
