QUESTION:
"I suffer from severe headaches which have the characteristics of
migraines, as I've read. Are there any natural treatments for them? Do
you know what causes them? Should I see a doctor about a migraine?"
Gus
ANSWER:
I guess you were not reading Ask Lena Health Q & A last September as a
very similar question came up and was answered but I continue to get
this question often so I will answer again for those who did not read it
the first time.
Let's take the last part of the question first.
All headaches that reoccur more than three or four times, in a short
period of time, should be checked out by a neurologist to make sure it's
not caused from tumors or a physical anomaly. I realize that in this
HMO/PPO medical environment that it isn't always possible to go straight
to a Neurologist!
But if headaches persist, you should INSIST on seeing a Neurologist!
One of the most common mistakes made is misdiagnosising headaches. There
really isn't enough space here to list all the causes, cures and
preventions but I will attempt to do so? Some headaches are so severe
people misdiagnose them as migraine when in fact they are only stress or
hormonal headaches! Women tend to get the hormonal headaches and since
you are a man it will not apply to you? Men tend to more often have
dehydration induced or stress related or food related headaches.
First you need to make sure it really is a migraine headache! Migraines
are almost always preceded by one of several things. Those being;
a. A flash of light in one or both eyes, lasting from 1
minute up to 30 minutes.
b. An aura of colors in your field of vision, again lasting
from 1 minute up to 30 minutes.
c. Behavioral signs such as depression, crying jags, unexplained
anger, yawning, muscle pains in neck and/or jaw, dietary cravings
(chocolate, sugar, junk food), and fatigue. This type of beginning
usually causes the headache to develop gradually, last longer and are
more debilitating than the migraine with visual aura or color pattern.
Migraines have many primary and inducing causes.
There are as many causes of migraines as there is people, but basically
a migraine is engorged blood vessels that exert pressure on the nerves
from many causes; dehydration, stress, anxiety, menses, oral
contraceptives, bright light, drop of barometric pressure, lack of
sleep, hunger, over exertion, head injury, food allergies, - foods or
drink that contain nitrites, glutamates, aspartic acid, aspartame (aka
nutrasweet, sweet n low, etc,) caffeine, MSG and tyrosine - and
sometimes it can just be the motion of driving past a row of fences or
the motion of movement, watching TV with a lot of action, any and/or all
can induce migraines. One common denominator these days is video games,
with the speed of the graphics and lights flashing in the face can set
off a migraine that may not happen until an hour or so after playing a
video game.
This is just a few of the theories being banded about as to the cause.
Most common cause that I observed in men, over the years, is dehydration
and/or stress and on top of that a large number of those migraine
sufferers drink several of the following drinks; Pepsi, Coke, Mountain
Dew, Dr. Pepper, caffeine drinks, especially coffee, espresso coffees
and strong tea and the worse of those are the ones who drink the diet
version!
Treatments can be varied and what works for one does not always work for
another... Men tend to have Stress Related Migraines and that requires
diligence in treating...
Treatment #1:
Daily supplementing with Life Transfusion Ionic Liquid Minerals ? 30 to
40 drops twice a day in juice. And STOP DRINKING SODAS (diet & regular),
COFFEE AND TEA (herbal tea not included): (Be aware that ? Caffeine-free
coffee and tea isn't truly caffeine free and on top of that
caffeine-free usually includes chemicals not found in regular.) Some
doctors prescribe or tell you drink or take pain reliever that has a
main ingredient of caffeine to stop the migraine. That advice creates a
larger problem and exacerbates migraines in a large number of migraine
sufferers!
Treatment #2:
1st; is Ionic Silver Water, 1 Tablespoon twice a day for a couple
of weeks, to kill any yeast in the body that may be exacerbating the
problem.. Ionic Silver Water

2nd; the necessity of minerals 20 to 30 drops in juice morning
and afternoon, to strengthen the veins and arteries and assure the
absorption of nutrients from foods and supplements. Ionic Liquid
Minerals
Minerals Found Here
3rd; Take Tolerance Stress Relieving formula start with 3 three
times a day for a week then cut back to 1 three times a day thereafter.
That can be found
Tolerance Found Here
4th; Take Mind Power Anti-aging Formula 1 capsule in the morning
noon and dinner/supper. For one week. Then increase it to 2 capsules
morning and noon for second week. Increase to 3 capsule morning and 2
capsules at noon for third week and thereafter? This will strengthen the
brain and it's pathways. Mind Power

That should stop them if they are stress or depression caused. Being
faithful at taking minerals and herbs is necessary to assure success...
Here are Herbs that are known to work in both sexes;
* Feverfew - A recommended daily dosage of 125 mg of a dried feverfew
leaf preparation containing a minimum of 0.2% parthenolide is often
prescribed for migraine prevention. This translates to a daily
parthenolide dosage of at least 250 mcg. This is considered the minimum
amount for efficacy. Some studies indicate that 100 mg. per day of
feverfew extract at .7% parthenolide content may be more desirable.
* Gingko Biloba - Use up to 240 mg, daily.
* Ginger - Ginger tea works, for a migraine headache in the front of the
head. One case study published in the "Journal of Ethnopharmacology"
reported on a
42 year old female migraine sufferer who found relief taking 500 to 600
mg of ginger powder mixed with water every four hours. Nothing found in
regards to working on men but I'm sure it will work with a certain
number as well? (This one works with my son quite well along with
minerals and exercise.)
* Kava kava - 140 to 210 mg of kavalactones. Works for the treatment of
stress-related migraines.
*Valerian - 300 to 500 mg. Use a standardized extract. Valerian has
traditionally been used for relaxation at bedtime, but may be helpful in
reducing the incidence of recurring headaches due to stress. (Do not
drive a vehicle within 4 hours of taking this herb.)
* Black willow (Salix nigra) - In decoction. (decoction is a liquid
preparation made by boiling a medicinal plant with water, usually in the
proportion of 5 parts of the leaves/root/stems to 100 parts of water)
* Solaray has a pain formula, "Relief Blend SP-10" a pain formula that
works well in a large number of people, usually carried in health food
stores that carry Soloray products.
* Wayne Garland has three formulas that work well. One works in stress
induced migraines and that formula is called
Tolerance
AnitAnxiety Formula. The other two work together to strengthen the
arteries and blood vessels, which find it had to become constricted or
engorged when strong and those two are; "Structural
Lubrication" and "Skeletal
Support."
For women there is a whole new ballgame in treatment and ascertaining
what is causing them. Hormones come into play most often. So women
readers you will have to contact me or see a previous answer I did at
Common Connections Question of the Week

Herbal treatments only work well if taken on a regular basis.
But there is no liver damage or bone deterioration with them as with
most prescription and OTC medications.

Drink a lot of purified water. Tap water usually contains chlorine or
some other bacteria killer, which can also cause migraines and can
exacerbate them so make sure you drink filtered/purified water.
This is by no means a complete list of treatments but the most common
ones!
Let me know what works for you!

THE SECOND BEST TIME TO BEGIN
Philosopher and economist Friedrich Engels said, "An ounce of action is
worth a ton of theory." Perhaps it is easier to talk about what to do
than to do it.
U.S. District court judge Woodrow Seal was active in a philanthropic
organization known as The Society of St. Stephen. It is an
internationally recognized organization with the sole purpose of helping
people in need.
One day a church invited Mr. Seal to speak to their congregation and
explain to them how they might begin a Society of St. Stephen. The plan
was for the him to speak on the various programs of the society, then
follow up with a time for discussion.
The people took their seat and the minister introduced the featured
speaker. The judge helped himself to cookies and poured a cup of
coffee. When the introduction was completed, Judge Seal walked over to
the piano, put his coffee cup on top of it, and began to fumble in his
coat pockets. Finally, he pulled out a wrinkled piece of paper and from
it read the name of a mother and her four children, including their ages
and clothing sizes.
He noted several other unmet needs of the family and mentioned that
their address was on the paper which he carefully laid on top of the
piano. The judge then said, "If you want to start a Society of St.
Stephen, then you should contact this woman by 11:30 tomorrow morning.
If you are not able to help her, don't worry, I'll be in contact with
her tomorrow and I'll get her help by mid-afternoon."
With that, the judge turned to leave. "Now, forgive me," he said, "but I
really must be going. Thank you for inviting me and for the coffee and
the cookies."
Before anyone could respond he walked out the door. It all took less
than five minutes.
Here was a group of people who thought they were going to spend an hour
listening to a program on how to help others in need, and maybe discuss
its merits for a while. Instead they spent an hour deciding how to help
one family...and the next day they did it.
Judge Seal wasn't content to sit around helplessly waiting for people to
make a decision. The problem for most of us is not lack of knowledge but
lack of action. When all is said and done...more will have been said
than done! But like the Chinese proverb teaches, "The best time to plant
a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now."
What are you trying to plant? The second best time to do it is now!

FOOD OF THE WEEK

Bananas to Health And Healing!
Bananas help prevent a number of illnesses and health conditions.
Bananas contain three natural sugars, sucrose, fructose and glucose, and
when combined with fiber, bananas produce an instant, sustained, and
substantial boost of energy. Research has shown that just two bananas
provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout.
Bananas could be called the food to healing and health! Over the years
as the doctors I worked with put patients on blood pressure medications,
which remove a multitude of minerals, but the medical profession only
recognize potassium as the mineral necessary to health. We know that
isn't the case, but the doctors then and now had the good sense to
recommend a patient eat one or two bananas a day to keep the potassium
level safe!
Bananas are Minerals rich in Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus,
Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, Selenium, along with
Vitamins which Include Vitamin C, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin,
Pantothenic acid,Vitamin B-6, Folate, Folic acid, Vitamin B-12, Vitamin
A, Retinol, Vitamin A, Vitamin E and Tocopherol.
According to a recent survey of people suffering from
depression found that many felt much better after eating a banana. This
is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein the body
converts into serotonin, which makes you alert, improves your mood, and
generally make you feel happier. So eat and expect less depression!
PMS may be averted by eating bananas. The vitamin B6 in bananas
regulates blood glucose levels, which is responsible for some of PMS
symptoms and eating does affect your mood (among other things).
Anemia medication: Bananas are high in iron, which stimulates the
production of hemoglobin in the blood, which helps anemia.
Blood Pressure leveler: This unique tropical fruit is extremely
high in potassium yet low in salt making it the perfect food to lower
blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has
permitted the banana industry to officially claim the fruit's ability to
'reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.'
Brain Power increased: 200 students at a Middlesex, UK school
were helped through exams by eating bananas at breakfast, at break, and
during lunch to boost their brainpower. Research has shown that the
potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.
Constipation prevention: High in fiber, bananas in the diet can
restore normal bowel movement without laxatives.
Hangover cure: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is
to make a banana milkshake sweetened with honey. The banana calms the
stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds depleted blood sugar
levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates the system.
Stomach calmer: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the
body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing
relief.
Morning Sickness treatment: Snacking on bananas between meals
helps keep blood sugar levels up so to avoid morning sickness. Morning
sickness is caused from a lack of B vitamins more often than blood sugar
fluctuations and since bananas have the B's eat one!
Mosquito bite treatment: Before reaching for the insect bite
cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin.
Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and
irritation.
Nerves calmed: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the
nervous system.
Overweight and work too much? Studies at the Institute of
Psychology in Austria found work pressure leads to gorging on comfort
food like chocolate and chips. Out of 5,000 hospital patients,
researchers found the most obese were in high-pressure jobs. The report
concluded that to avoid panic-induced food cravings and control blood
sugar levels, snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours kept
levels steady
Ulcers calm down: Bananas can prevent intestinal disorders
because of the soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit
that can be eaten without distress in sensitive health situations. It
also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the
lining of the stomach.
Temperature control: Many cultures see bananas as a "cooling"
fruit that lowers both the physical and emotional temperature of
expectant mothers. In Thailand, for example, pregnant women eat bananas
to ensure their babies are born with a cool temperature.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas help SAD sufferers
because they contain the natural mood enhancers, tryptophan and Vitamin
B's.
Calm smoking withdrawals: Bananas can also help people trying to
stop smoking. B6 and B12 in bananas, as well as potassium and magnesium,
help the body recover from the withdrawal effects.
Stress leveler: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps
normalize the body's heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain, and regulates
the body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate
raises reducing potassium levels. These levels can be rebalanced by
eating a high-potassium banana.
Cut Stroke Risk: According to research in The New England Journal
of Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk
of death by strokes as much as 40%!
Warts: It is said if you want to destroy a wart, take a piece of
banana skin and place it on the wart (with the yellow side out). Tape
the skin in place with a Band-Aid or surgical tape.
Grow Beautiful Rose Bushes with Bananas: Blend the soft part of the
banana skin in a blender full of water and pour on the base of your rose
bushes to promote healthy roots and new growth.
Eating fresh fruits and vegetables results in a basic detoxification
diet. So, eat as many raw and pure, unprocessed and uncooked foods as
you can each day and make bananas one of those raw fruits.
BANANA SMOOTHIE
3 ripe frozen bananas
4-5 T peanut butter (all natural creamy or chunky)
1 T ground flaxseed
2 T honey
1 c. skim or 1% milk ( Use soy milk)
Place all ingredients in a blender and puree well and serve.
NOTE: I add strawberries, pineapple chunks, frozen fresh peaches
and frozen grapes to this as an added fiber and taste alternate.
Enjoy your nutritious healthy food!
