READER'S COMMENT
Hello Lena,
It has recently come to light that low levels of DHA in the mother can
have a significant impact on her mental condition. That is, post-partum
depression can actually be caused by low levels DHA. Bi-polar disorder
in general (men and non-pregnant women alike) has also been treated
sucessfully with Omega 3 supplementation.
In pregnant mothers, the body gives the developing babe the majority of
DHA that is produced to ensure healthy brain developement. As the
mother nurses, the process continues, thus depleting the DHA available
to the mother's own proper brain function.
It is well known that PPD is more severe with second and subsequent
pregnancies-thats because the mother has had even more of her own
supplies deminished for the sake of the developement of her growing
baby.
To get more DHA in the diet a woman can take a Omega 3 supplement and
add foods rich in Omega 3s to her diet (flax, walnuts, organic, free
range eggs, fish) - and can take a supplement. Vegan moms can look for
something called Omega3 Zen - a supplement cold pressed from seaweed.
The supplements should be taken throughout pregnancy and for the first
year.
Please research this further, if needed - and print it. People need to
know!
Blessings,
Melanie
LENA'S NOTE: This comment came in response to last weeks
Q&A and I am reprinting her comments as a courtesy to her and the desire
that you see all sides of a situation... I cannot completely agree with
her statement. DHA is the predominant fatty acid in human brain tissue
and retinas and is the most abundant omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid
in human breast milk.
While her statement is true according to some reports, it is also a
known fact that those lacking in DHA (Omega 3) are also lacking in a
multitude of the other necessary 84 minerals and trace minerals that the
body needs for balance and to function properly and when those are all
present the DHA, CLA & ALA are also present... I believe that it should
be taken in conjunction with a complete mineral complex... Yes PPD does
tend to occur more often in second and subsequent pregnancies.
Researchers carry two different opinions on DHA:
1. "The scientific evidence about whether omega-3 fatty acids may
reduce the risk of coronary heart disease is not conclusive. It is also
suggestive, but not conclusive, in helping bipolar (manic-depressive)
disorder, Raynaud's phenomenon (abnormal sensitivity of hands and feet
to cold), lupus, IgA nephropathy, kidney stones, chronic fatigue
syndrome, and cystic fibrosis. Much more testing will need to be done
before we can conclusive say that DHA is the great preventer it is being
touted to be! We shall continue to look at this."
2. "Maintaining a sufficiency of DHA in our diets could ultimately
prove to be more important than taking vitamin supplements, and having a
low-cost and large-scale source available will be critical to making it
possible," Say researches of Martek Corp, producers of a DHA
supplement.
They then ended their report by saying;
"This press release contains forward-looking statements regarding the
commercialization of Martek and Syngenta's products. Such statements
involve risks and uncertainties that could cause future actual results
to differ due to a variety of risk factors, including without limitation
those factors set forth in both companies' filings with the Securities
and Exchange Commission."
Since it has been found that people low in DHA are also lacking in a
large number of other required 84 minerals and trace minerals putting us
back to the question, "Which came first the DHA or the minerals?" Twenty
years or so down the line that question may be answered if we can get
money out of the equation...
If you read Wednesday's "A Natural Environmental Health Facts" you saw a
new report on DHA (Omega 3) creating larger babies. This may or may not
pan out, but it is something to consider while pregnant and not getting
the full 84 minerals and trace minerals supplements... Supplementing
only with Omega 3 may or may not prevent Post-partum depression, or grow
larger babies, but it certainly won't hurt to try it while pregnant?
Lena
QUESTION:
Hi Lena.
You have helped me on numerous occasions. I thank you.
My Dad suffers from "dry eyes", Will omega3 fatty acids help? Pop needs
some help. He had his tear ducts cauterized to stop his eyes from
watering too much. Now they are too dry. Can you help please?
W. Peters
ANSWER:
You are very welcome; it is my pleasure to help!
Dry eyes? Yes, the Omega 3 fatty acids will contribute to helping, but
not noticeably in the dry eye problem. Omega3's will greatly contribute
to helping the other organs of the body work much better... He should be
taking Omega3's for many reasons, mostly aging?
Wish I had gotten him before the surgery it would have been much
simpler... As for now and the surgically induced dry eyes.
Two things help and in most cases correct the problem, but usually will
need to be an ongoing protocol as the ducts have been tampered with and
may not regenerate... These steps have proven to work great in several
people that I know...
First - The
Life Transfusion Ionic Liquid minerals in two ways. First 1/2 to 3/4
teaspoon by mouth in carrot or V8 juice twice a day. Second as an eye
bath.
Eye bath directions -Put two teaspoons of liquid
minerals in a basin of warm water and have him put his face into the
water, making sure the eyes are submerged. Open and close the eyes 4 or
five times under water so the minerals can be absorbed directly into the
eyes. Do this twice a day.
Second - he should be taking the
Vision Macular Degeneration Formula 2 - 3 capsules twice a day,
these give the eyes ongoing nourishment that is correcting vision all
over the world...Some people have even been so corrected that they have
thrown their glasses away, where others have had their glass
prescription decreased to a very small correction...
This protocol has helped several people with dry eye problem following
cataract surgery, which almost always produces dry eyes...
Hope it helps!

SIMPLY AMAZED!
I recall a story about Noah Webster (of dictionary fame), who
suddenly found himself one day in an embarrassing situation. He was
caught kissing the maid in the kitchen pantry by none other than his
wife.
"Why Noah!" she exclaimed. "I'm surprised!"
Always the semanticist, Noah replied, "No, my dear, you're amazed. I'm
surprised!"
No, I don't know how they ever resolved that situation. But I do know
that surprise and amazement are important if we are to make the most of
life's journey. People are dying to really love life. But they have, too
often, forfeited the present in order to worry about the future or
lament the past.
Ruth Carter Stapleton wrote a succinct philosophy of life in 1981,
which was later read at her graveside service. She said: "Time is
passing. Each day is a glorious opportunity to live and enjoy. Today
I will let the past die - all the undone things, all the
misjudged
things.... Today, there are new pleasures, new challenges, new
magic."
If she allowed herself to be surprised by the present, could she help
but be amazed every day by the "pleasures," "challenges" and "magic" all
around her? And how about you? Are you ready to put aside concern for
the past and future long enough to truly experience the present?
Are you ready to be amazed?

FOOD OF THE WEEK
=================
Cantaloupe,
A refreshing vine grown fruit that is 89% water
containing lots of minerals and vitamins!
Growing up we ate a lot of melons. Living in the Phoenix area with all
types of melons grown all around us it was inevitable and I am now
grateful to have had that experience.
Cantaloupe season is just around the corner, but in most parts of the
world you can get them the grocery store anytime of the year? June and
July is the typical season, here in Arizona, for full-swing harvest.
The best melons are slightly golden (not green), heavy, and fragrant at
the tender, indented end. Avoid discolored ones, but don't worry about a
smooth discolored patch; that's where the growing melon rested on the
ground.
1/8 of a large cantaloupe contains the Minerals;
Calcium - is essential for healthy bones and teeth, normal blood
clotting, and nervous system functioning. Necessary to regain the proper
pH balance
Iron - Iron is part of hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying component
of the blood. Iron is also part of myoglobin, which helps muscle cells
store oxygen. Necessary for healthy blood chemistry and is essential for
recovery from illness.
Magnesium - needed for bone, protein, and fatty acid formation,
making of new cells, activating B vitamins, relaxing muscles, clotting
blood, and forming adenosine triphosphate (ATP; the energy the body runs
on). The secretion and action of insulin also require magnesium. Is a
natural tranquilizer. Known as an "anti-stress mineral," it aids in
relaxing nerves, relieving tension, assisting digestion, activating
enzymes important for protein and carbohydrate metabolism, and
modulating the electrical impulses across all cell membranes. Is
important in the production and transfer of energy, muscle contraction
and relaxation, and nerve conduction. It also aids regularity, is
necessary to keep vertebrae in their proper position, induces restful
sleep, purifies and purges body tissues (combats acids, toxins, gases,
impurities, and neutralizes poisons), and lowers fever. Magnesium is
stored in the bowel, nerves and ligaments
Phosphorus - contributes to bone health, is often regarded as a
twin nutrient to calcium. Is involved, either directly or indirectly, in
nearly every biological or cellular function in the body.
Potassium - the mineral of life! Needed for growth, building
muscles, transmission of nerve impulses, heart activity etc. Potassium,
together with sodium - work together for the nervous system to transmit
messages as well as regulating the contraction of muscles. Potassium
also regulates water balance, assists recuperative powers, aids
rheumatic or arthritic conditions - detoxing acids to leave the joints
and ease stiffness - is vital for the elimination of wastes, is a
natural pain desensitizer, helps control convulsions, headaches, and
migraines, promotes faster healing of cuts, bruises and other injuries,
and generally contributes to a sense of well being. Potassium is stored
in the muscles...
Sodium - A mineral that regulates fluid balance by controlling
the flow of liquids in and out of each cell, sparks nerve impulses,
helps the body to process and digest proteins and carbohydrates.
Zinc - Zinc is an essential mineral that is found in almost every
cell. It stimulates the activity of approximately 100 enzymes, which are
substances that promote biochemical reactions in your body. Zinc
supports a healthy immune system, needed for wound healing, helps
maintain your sense of taste and smell, and is needed for DNA synthesis.
Zinc also supports normal growth and development during pregnancy,
childhood, and adolescence.
Copper - Copper is needed to absorb and utilize iron. Copper is
needed to make adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy the body runs
on. Synthesis of some hormones requires copper, as does collagen (the "glue"
that holds muscle tissue together) and tyrosinase (the enzyme that puts
pigment into the skin) copper is needed for healthy hair.
Manganese - is needed for healthy skin, bone, and cartilage
formation, as well as glucose tolerance. It also helps activate
superoxide dismutase (SOD)-an important antioxidant enzyme.
Selenium - activates an antioxidant enzyme called glutathione
peroxidase, which may help protect the body from cancer. Selenium has
also induced "apoptosis" (programmed cell death) in cancer cells.
1/8 th cantaloupe also contains the Vitamins;
C (carotenoids) - Is a water-soluble vitamin that functions as a
powerful antioxidant. One of vitamin C's important functions is to
protect LDL cholesterol from oxidative damage. Keeps the immune system
strong and help build healthy gums.
Thiamin - is necessary for normal growth, normal carbohydrate
metabolism and normal functioning of the heart, nerves and muscles.
Thiamin deficiency results in retarded growth and nerve disorders, and a
condition known as beriberi.
Riboflavin (B2) - required for normal growth, vigor, healthy
skin and mucosa, and normal eye function.
Niacin (B3) - is necessary for normal growth and skin health,
normal functioning of the stomach and intestines, nervous and
circulatory systems, and for carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism.
Pantothenic acid - a B-complex vitamin, is essential for humans
and animals for growth, reproduction, and normal physiological
functions. It is a precursor of the coenzymes, CoA and acyl carrier
protein of fatty acid synthase, which are involved in more than 100
different metabolic pathways including energy metabolism of
carbohydrates, proteins and lipids, and the synthesis of lipids,
neurotransmitters, steroid hormones, porphyrins and hemoglobin.
B-6 - helps control metabolism, benefits nervous system and
immune function.
Folate - is associated with the prevention of colon, rectal,
cervical, lung, stomach and esophageal cancers. Increasing your intake
of folate decreases the homocysteine levels in your blood. High
homocysteine levels are associated with heart disease, and suspected to
increase your risk of all the other ailments we listed above.
Folic acid - strengthens your immune system and boosts energy
B-12 - aids in digestions and said to prevent anemia, is needed
for normal nerve cell activity, DNA replication, and production of the
mood-affecting substance called SAMe (S-adenosyl-L-methionine). Vitamin
B12 works with folic acid to control homocysteine levels.
A (Retinol ) - an antioxidant that keeps skin soft and supple
good for the eyes. helps cells reproduce normally-a process called
differentiation.
E (Tocopherol ) - an antioxidant said to prevent cardiovascular
disease and cancer, improves circulation, promotes healthy skin and
hair.
It would seem to me that 1/8th or more of a cantaloupe would be a great
health builder!
Store at room temperature; refrigerate when ripe.
Great when sliced tossed with lime juice and fresh ginger for a
refreshing breakfast. Freeze peeled chunks and blend into smoothies.
Skewer cantaloupe and pineapple pieces and grill. Cantaloupe is great
snack after exercise. Helps rebuild and replenish energy without gaining
weight.
A little side note of interest, probably to nobody but me. If you've
ever passed a melon field where vines are being turned over, preventing
the melons from rotting on the ground side, with a device attached to a
tractor, my father invented that in my teen years!
Enjoy your cantaloupe!
