The warmth in the air and grandchildren running all over with why's and what's lets me know we are in full swing of summer. A lovely time of the year but oh so exhausting. I've increased my water/mineral/lemon juice intake just to keep up with the critters. Two more will be arriving this week making it a full house so if I'm slack at answering your questions you will know why! I do promise to make it no longer than 48 hours with an answer though!

Steve has come up with another great Motivator, as only he can! If you enjoy his weekly Motivator let him know and tell him you read it in A Natural Environmental Health Facts ezine.

Your health questions are being answered to the best of my ability using what I gleaned from 20-years as a Medical Office Nurse and Administrator along with my education in nutritional and alternative modes. I am not a doctor and you should not think of me as one.

Q & A is for your information and education only and in some instances to give you a different perspective on a particular problem!

My wish for you, in the use of the information gained here, is that you will apply it in a smart and safe manner in order to enhance your life and not harm it! Not to be used in place of your judgment but in  addition to...

I have always felt that I had to know all sides to a problem and then make a decision for myself and I hope that will be your attitude as well!

QUESTION:

What is an alternative for HRT?  At what age can I quit taking HRT or is it necessary to take it forever?

Melanie W.

ANSWER:

Thanks for your question Melanie:

Age isn't really the determining factor for HRT (hormone replacement therapy). With the nutrients missing from our foods, hormones in the meat and the junkfood age at it's best, women are experiencing perimenopause in their 30's versus 50's in the past...

Ongoing HRT depends on whether you have a uterus and ovaries or not?

For women who have had a complete hysterectomy a lifetime of HRT, in my opinion and experience, is smart for a lot of reasons. If a woman has recently had a hysterectomy there is the possibility of bypassing replacement HRT with herbs and minerals, but if she had the hysterectomy several years ago she most likely will require ongoing lifetime HRT. We women have a myriad of hormone producing glands other than our ovaries, but after surgical removal and with HRT those glands atrophy (dry up) from the HRT as the organs are sent a signal to not produce thereby preventing them from doing their job. Thus after a period of time, making it impossible to create stimulation and get them to regenerate hormone production, thus making the HRT necessary. Unless you want leathery skin, lots of body hair and can live with the headaches and moods for years. The danger of uterine cancer from the HRT no longer exists as a concern...

But for women who have all their female anatomy there are herbal and mineral supplements to keep the glands working and balanced, and will not continue your periods, so HRT isn't an issue. I am lucky that I work with Dr. Wayne Garland, who came up with a supplement program, which is working for hundreds of women and has been for almost 12 years now. Both my daughters began his program when they started with perimenopausal symptoms and is working well... Women who have taken birth control pills for years will take longer to get control and if she continues with BC will require a different amount and needs to consult with Dr. Garland.

That program consists of two things; 1. Life Transfusion Ionic Liquid Minerals  2. Balanced Woman Master Formula working together helps the body to continue in balance, while also allowing a bypass of perimenopause and menopause symptoms.

Hope this answers your questions,
Lena

LIVING FULLY

Do you feel your life is all it can be? Do you yearn for life to be
fuller? A friend once recited this poem to me:

    There once was a cautious gal,
        who never romped or played;
    She never drank, she never smoked,
        from the path she never strayed.

    So when she passed away
        the insurance was denied;
    For since she never really lived
        they claimed she never died!

Of course, I don't think these behaviors describe quality living, but
I do think most people want to experience life as fully as possible.
This has always been the case. Even two thousand years ago, Jesus, that great lover of life, recognized our universal yearning for life when he said, "I have come that they might have life and have it more abundantly."

And, of course, "romping," "playing," and "straying from the path"
have little to do with how fully one experiences life. Abundant living
is more about how we love the other people on this planet, how we care for ourselves and how well we honor our God. It has to do with joy and laughter, kindness, forgiveness and peace. It means taking time for what is truly necessary.

One man was asked if he believed in life after death. His wife spoke first. "Life after death?" she said. "He doesn't even believe in life after dinner!"

I believe in life after death. But I also believe in life before
death. Abundant and full and beginning today.

FOOD OF THE WEEK

A Little Cabbage Wannabe, Brussel Sprouts!

I love these little green cabbage wannabe's, but I wondered exactly what they contained and how I am benefiting from them and found some really good things? Named after the capital of Belgium, where they are believed to have first been cultivated.

The perfect miniature versions of the cabbage, Brussels sprouts are available year round. They are, however, at their best from autumn through early spring when they are at the peak of their growing season.

Brussels sprouts are members of the Brassica (cruciferous) family and therefore kin to broccoli as well as cabbage. They grow in bunches of 20 to 40 on the stem of a plant that grows about two to three feet tall.

Sprouts manage to pack a whollop with folate, beta carotene along with vitamins E, A, B5, B3, B 12, B6, B1, K, tryptophan. Then the minerals present are potassium, phosphorus, iron, manganese, copper, calcium but that's still not all there are omega 3 fatty acids and all this in that little green miniature cabbage wannabe. Healthy eating at it's best?

Plant phytochemicals found in Brussels sprouts spur on the activity of the body's natural defense systems to protect against disease, including cancer. Scientists have found that sulforaphane, a potent phytonutrient found in Brussel sprouts and other brassica vegetables, boosts the body's detoxification enzymes, potentially by altering gene expression, thus helping to clear potentially carcinogenic substances more quickly. Additionally, researchers in the Netherlands investigated the effect of a diet high in Brussels sprouts on DNA damage. They compared two groups of healthy male volunteers. Five men ate a diet that included 300 g (about 10 ounces) of cooked Brussels sprouts daily, while the other five men ate a diet free of cruciferous vegetables. After three weeks, the group that ate Brussels sprouts had 28% decrease in measured DNA damage. Reduced DNA damage may very well translate to a reduced risk of cancer since mutations in DNA allow cancer cells to develop.

When brussels and other cruciferous vegetables are cut, chewed or digested, a sulfur-containing compound called sinigrin is brought into contact with the enzyme myrosinase, resulting in the release of glucose and breakdown products, including highly reactive compounds called isothiocyanates. Isothiocyanates are not only potent inducers of the liver?s Phase II enzymes, which detoxify carcinogens, but research conducted at the Institute for Food Research in the U.K. shows one of these compounds, allylisothicyanate, also inhibits cell division and stimulates programmed cell death in human tumor cells. A very good thing!

Brussels sprouts are an excellent source of vitamin C, the body's primary water-soluble antioxidant. Vitamin C supports immune function and the manufacture of collagen, a protein that forms the ground substance of body structures including the skin, connective tissue, cartilage, and tendons. A large study conducted on nearly 20,000 men and women in England found that people with the highest vitamin C levels had half the risk of dying from heart disease, stroke or cancer. Risk of dying from heart disease was reduced by 71% in men and 59% for women in the group with the highest vitamin C levels.

How to Select and Store

Brussels sprouts should be firm, compact and vivid green. No yellowed or wilted leaves and should not be puffy or soft in texture. If Brussels sprouts are sold individually, choose those of equal size to ensure that they will cook evenly

Cleaning Fresh Brussels;
Before washing Brussels sprouts, remove stems and any yellow or discolored leaves. Wash them well under running water or soak them in a bowl of water to remove any insects that may reside in the inner leaves.

Brussels sprouts are usually cooked whole. Cut an "X" in the bottom of the stem before cooking this will allow the heat to permeate throughout all of the leaves and better ensure an even texture.

While Brussels sprouts are usually served as a side dish, warm, they also make a nice addition to cold salads.

Our favorite ways of eating brussel sprouts are;
Braise Brussels sprouts in steamed with salt and pepper. Or toss quartered cooked Brussels sprouts with sliced red onions, walnuts, black olive slices and your favorite mild tasting cheese such as a goat cheese or feta. Toss with olive oil and balsamic vinegar for an exceptionally healthy, delicious side dish.

Keep unwashed and untrimmed Brussels sprouts in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator, in a perforated plastic bag, for three to four days. If you want to freeze Brussels sprouts, blanch them first for between three to five minutes. They will keep in the freezer for up to one year. If kept at room temperature, their leaves will turn yellow quickly.

Now I know why I love these little things and you should love them too!
Lena
