Greetings and hope for your week to start off well!
Today's Q&A reflects the fact that I am receiving more dental
questions than usual and this week and next week will hopefully cover
just about any question you may have. I am not a dentist nor did I have
hands on work with dentists but my studies have helped a great deal with
teeth and gum problems. I am at this moment using an herbal dental
compound and will pass that information on in a few weeks, should the
claims prove to be true.
As usual

QUESTION:
Hi Lena,
Please I have a swollen gum (my teeth is complete) what do you think is
the cause and what can I do to stop it from swelling? It happens from
time to time just by the side of my molars. Can you help?
Thanks for your assistance.
Regards,
Ib
ANSWER:
You do not say if it is discolored and/or sore in that area, or not?
There can be several reasons for swollen gums.
1)There are nutritional causes that may or may not fit you;
Vitamin C deficiency as well as other mineral and nutritional
imbalances.
2)You may have eaten popcorn or some other food that had a hard shell
and a piece became stuck between the gum and the tooth or you have a
plaque build up in that area. Both probably will require seeing a
dentist to be removed, but sometimes you can remove food pieces with
flossing the area and/or waterpik. Be careful that you don't get too
overly zealous with flossing and cut the gum...
3) If the spot is at the last molar you could have problem with the
wisdom tooth trying to come in and there isn't enough room. (you
don't give your age so I don't know if that is your case and that will
depend on whether you have already had your wisdom teeth grow in.)
4) You may have a nerve or root inflammation problem in that
area and need an antibiotic. (Our household uses inexpensive but
very effective
Ionic Silver Water, take about 1 - 2 Tablespoons and swish it around
that area for a couple of minutes, then swallow the silver water. This
works well for all mouth infections.
5) Are you eating something hard before this happens?
Eating chips and other hard food can scratch the gum and it will react
with red swollen inflamed gums. This too can be relieved with the
Ionic Silver Water...
6) The tooth in that area may have an internal cavity that you
cannot see but is in the root portion of the tooth and can cause
swelling from time to time. Using a waterpik with baking soda two or
three times a day for a few days may eliminate the problem, if not see a
dentist... I do not recommend root canals. SEE NEXT WEEKS QUESTION AND
ANSWER as to why!
7) Other health problems not yet diagnosed or already diagnosed;
Leukemia - Tumors, or abnormal growth on the gum, which may be harmless
or cancerous. Once the illness is corrected the gums will usually become
normal again.
8) Drugs - side effects of certain drugs used ongoing may
result in increased size of the gums (not usually perceived as swelling
in one area only.) Example; Phenytoin, dilantin, and phenobarbital used
in Epileptic seizures, Nifedepine and other blood pressure medications.
(Swelling caused by a drug is usually very thick and hard. The swelling
occurs only when the drug is taken over a period of time. If swelling is
due to drugs, stopping that drug will automatically cause a reduction of
swelling.)
9) One that I seriously doubt this is your problem but
toothpaste or mouthwash ingredients can create gum problems. (This
usually affect the whole mouth not just one spot.)
I hope you can detect the cause of your swelling and get it corrected as
bad gums can be the root cause of a lot of illnesses (bacteria and germs
dwelling there for long periods of time end up in the blood stream)...
Sincerely,
Lena

LOOKING FOR BEAUTY
Many of us feel passed over in a world that seems to place a high value
on outward beauty. But a short poem by Anthony Ewell reminds us that
physical attractiveness can be over-rated. He writes:
As a beauty I am not a great star,
There are others more handsome by far.
But my face, I don't mind it,
For I am behind it,
It's the people in front who get the jar!"
Maybe you are not the most beautiful person in the world. And maybe, as
the poem suggests, it doesn't matter. There is hidden beauty in each of
us that can be experienced by anybody who cares to explore.
Several times I have visited a natural wonder that is one of the largest
and most spectacular of its kind in the world. Carlsbad Caverns is an
immense series of limestone caves extending under much of southern New
Mexico (USA). Native Americans took refuge in the gaping hole that is
the main entrance, but they did not venture far. A hundred years ago
settlers in the area were attracted to the opening by the awesome sight
of hundreds of thousands of bats swarming from the hole every summer
evening. Though a bat guano mining operation was set up, nobody explored
much beyond the bat's dwelling places.
Eventually, a cowboy name Jim White explored deeper. He returned with
fantastic stories of gigantic subterranean chambers, spectacular cave
formations and unbelievably stupendous sights. Even in 1915, after black
and white photographs were taken of the caverns, many did not believe.
The government sent skeptic Robert Holley to investigate in 1923. He
wrote in his final report, "I am wholly conscious of the feebleness of
my efforts to convey in words the deep conflicting emotions, the feeling
of fear and awe, and the desire for an inspired understanding of the
Divine Creator's work which presents to the human eye such a complex
aggregate of natural wonders."
A whole new world - majestic, wondrous and awe-inspiring - lay hidden
from view. Its unimagined beauty can only be experienced by exploring
beneath the surface.
And so it is with people. We each possess a unique inner beauty
that can be discovered by anyone who cares to explore beneath the
surface. You may have even successfully hidden it from yourself, but
that does not mean it is not there.
Outward looks simply don't matter. Who we really are lays beneath the
outer landscape like a magnificent subterranean palace. When you look
for beauty beneath the surface, you will see what others have missed.
And you will be rewarded beyond measure.

FOOD OF THE WEEK

Figgy Food Medicine
Just had a call from my friend in Southern California say, "Come get
some figs the tree is falling down from the weight of so many!"
I'm not a great fan of figs but I will eat one occasionally and it got
me to thinking about what is in them. Here is what I found!
Have you heard of a Fresh Fig Poultice? No! Its use is found in the
Bible in Isaiah 38:21 Works, wonders for boils and skin infections.
Figs are one of the first known natural medicines. The Roman writer
Pliny, (52-113 AD) said, "Figs are restorative. They increase the
strength of young people, preserve the elderly in better health and make
them look younger with fewer wrinkles."
Figs contain the photochemical psoralenes, which helps bring about
beneficial results in skin injuries, hence a fig poultice to draw and
infection to a head. Also beneficial in the removal of dead skin tissues
as for cosmetic use in facial scrubs, and in a skin disease involving
lack of pigmentation in patches of skin (vitiligo). I bet it is the
mineral properties contained in figs that does the trick!
Both fresh and dried figs are great medicinals! Dried, having about 5
times the amount of nutrients as fresh.
Figs have the highest overall mineral content of all common fruits.
A 40 gram (1/4 cup) serving provides 244 mg of potassium (7% of the DV),
53 mg of calcium (6% of the DV) and 1.2 mg of iron (6% of the DV). On
top of that contain the calming vitamins B1 and B2.
Great for intestinal balance and cleansing Figs have the highest dietary
fiber of any common fruit, nut or vegetable. They are high in peptic
fiber, which is a soft soluble fiber and helps the body remove toxic
wastes and reduces cholesterol levels. They are good to prevent and
relieve constipation. Chinese medicine recognizes figs as a toxin
neutralizer. One of the most alkalizing foods, figs can help balance the
acid that forms from diets rich in meat and refined foods. Figs contain
significant amounts of the proteolytic enzyme Ficin which is a digestion
enzyme helping with the digestion especially of proteins.
Word of caution; check that the figs you are buying are organic and of
good quality. Fumigation is sometimes used to assure the absence of
insects in figs and sulphur dioxide is used to maintain their sweet
flavor and rich color. Dried figs infested by mites (rare but possible)
may cause severe gastrointestinal conditions if eaten. Mold attack may
cause figs to form mycotoxins, which can make you ill, so stick with
fresh when you can.
Here are some great ways to eat figs;
1. Tuck a few figs into a plastic bag for the office, school,
game or park, makes a quick healthful snack. Satisfies a sweet tooth.
2. Keep a container of dried organic figs in a desk drawer at
work, to satisfy late afternoon munchies, or to nibble at coffee break
time.
3. Chop a few California figs to add to tossed green salads. They
add delightful sweetness and texture, as well as fiber.
4. Sweeten up mashed or cubed winter squash or sweet potatoes
with some chopped figs adding a richness of their own, so you can skip
the butter or margarine.
5. Blend low-fat cream, ricotta or cottage cheese with some figs
to create a great spread for toast or bagels, or as a dip for sliced
fresh fruit.
6. Chop some California figs to scatter over instant or regular
oatmeal or any cold cereal, skipping the sugar.
Grab a bag from your neighbor's tree and put them into your dehydrator
for future use!
Enjoy your figgy food medicine!
