Greetings! I do hope your weekend was a good one and the week
starts off on a good note. If not don't give up, each day is new and who
knows what tomorrow hold?
We are still experiencing occasional waves of wind, rain and
storming. Certainly cooled off a lot.
I've always said if I receive a question then a lot more are
thinking and looking for the answer to the same question. This week I'm
not so sure my premise is accurate.
As usual Steve has come up with another great Motivator, as only he can!
If you enjoy his weekly Motivator let him know and tell him you read it
in "A Natural Environmental Health Facts Ask Lena Health Q & A ezine."
Publisher@LifeSupportSystem.com
Wishing you a week of health and wealth building!
Your health questions are being answered to the best of my ability using
what I gleaned from 20-years as a Medical Office Nurse and Administrator
along with my education in nutritional and alternative modes. I am not a
doctor and you should not think of me as one. Bobijane asks a question
I've never received and I wonder if anyone else ever wanted to know, but
more than likely!
Q & A is for your information and education only and in
some instances to give you a different perspective
on a particular problem!
My wish for you, in the use of the information gained here,
is that you will apply it in a smart and safe manner in order to enhance your life and not harm it!
Not to be used in place of your judgment but in
addition to...
I have always felt that I had to know all sides to a problem
and then make a decision for myself and I hope that will be your attitude as well!

QUESTION:
Hi I know this will seem an odd question but if they can do heart
transplant then can they do a uterus one also ??? see in January 94, i
had to have mine removed because of excessive bleeding from a tear in my
uterus anyways i do have three teenagers and but now I'm remarried and I
really want another baby but all I have is my ovaries... also do I still
produce eggs even if I don't have a period??? please respond this has
been of interest for some time now to me??? I just want to check out
what my options are...Thank very much Bobijane
ANSWER
It is being looked at and even one somewhat successful human uterine
transplantation has occurred.
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, The Sahlgrenska Academy,
Goteborg University, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Goteborg, Sweden.
stated:
"....The logical but radical approach for treatment would be replacement
of the unfunctional or absent uterus. Uterine transplantation could
allow these women to become both genetic and gestational mothers. The
present work reviews the existing literature on the history and recent
development around this topic. We also briefly describe a newly
developed model for heterotopic uterine transplantation in the mouse, in
which pregnancies have been accomplished. Some specific issues that are
required to be solved prior any further attempts to transplant the
uterus in humans are also addressed. In mouse transplantation; A
syngeneic mouse model with a uterus transplanted, by end-to-side
aorta/vena cava vascular anastomoses, alongside the native uterus was
used. The cervix was attached to a cutaneous stoma. Pregnancy rate and
offspring (birth weight, growth and fertility) was evaluated after
blastocyst transfer to the native and the grafted uterus of transplanted
mice and to controls. RESULTS: Pregnancy rates were comparable in the
grafted uterus (8/12 animals became pregnant) and the native uterus
(9/12 pregnant) of transplanted animals and controls (8/13 pregnant). In
a separate set of animals, the native uterus was removed at
transplantation to exclude influences from the native uterus on the
pregnancy potential of the graft; two of four animals became pregnant
after blastocyst transfer. The weights/lengths of fetuses (gestational
day 18) and gestational lengths were similar in all groups. Offspring
were delivered and the growth trajectories (up to 8 weeks) of offspring
delivered from grafted or native uteri of transplanted mice were similar
as compared with controls, and all were fertile. The second-generation
offspring from transplanted animals were all fertile with normal birth
weights. CONCLUSIONS: These observations document the capacity of a
transplanted uterus to harbour pregnancies to term, and reveal that
offspring from a transplanted uterus develop to normal fertile adults."
There has been one human allograft uterine transplantation reported in
2000 from Saudi Arabia. A 26-year-old woman who 6 years previously had a
hysterectomy for post-partum hemorrhage. The donor uterus was placed in
the orthotopic position (grafting of tissue in a natural position ). The uterine arteries and veins were extended
using reversed segments of the great saphenous vein and then attached to
the external ilial arteries and veins respectively. Oral cyclosporine A,
azathioprine and prednisone were given orally to prevent rejection.
There were two episodes of withdrawal bleeding with hormonal therapy.
Acute vascular thrombosis occurred 99 days postoperatively with uterine
infarction, and recipient's hysterectomy then became necessary. The tubes
were viable and without rejection. The origin of the tubes, whether
donor or recipient, was not identified.
The vascular accident was presumably due to inadequate uterine support
and kinking of the uterine vascular grafts. Fageeh et al. suggested that
the radial artery as well as the great saphenous vein be considered for
the vascular pedicle. Even though the transplant was successful it
failed in the end due to the vascular pedicle.
I personally do not believe this will ever become a normal transplant
procedure.
First, Because the medications needed for the rest of the life,
to prevent rejection, is not really conducive to a healthy baby should a
pregnancy occur - 50/50 chance.
Secondly, it will be so expensive that most women will not be
able to afford it and who will be the donor?
Thirdly, In order to have a better chance of success the need to
use the saphoneous vein will make for a great deal of leg scarring and
the majority of women of child bearing age are not willing to live with
that scarring side effect.
Hope this helps answer your questions,
Lena

MOTIVATOR

GREAT TEACHERS
I met a great teacher. She lived in a small Costa Rican village where my
family vacationed. She was no formal educator, philosopher or person of
any renown. Actually, she made chocolate to sell to tourists.
She took us into her small home. It consisted of a single, partitioned
room with a dirt floor and a wood-burning stove. Its paneless windows
were open to an encroaching jungle that surrounded the dwelling. This
house, by my North American standards, might not be considered more than
a shack or a hut. Yet it was home to a warm and happy family of four.
She showed us how she picks the cocoa beans from her porch, crushes
them, boils them in a paste, adds sugar and other ingredients and
finally produces chocolate. We sampled chocolate candies, bananas and
other native fruit picked from the jungle.
She not only invited us into her home, but into her life. And for a
couple of hours, she allowed these strangers a glimpse into her world.
Here was a person who had no TV, no computer, no washer and drier,
no microwave oven, no automobile...no floor!...and none of the
conveniences of my daily life. I saw no books or magazines and presumed
that only her children (two lovely teenaged girls, home that day from
school) could read and write. Yet this woman taught me so much. And if I
could have stayed longer, I would have learned more -about her life, her
world, her culture and her ideas.
Who are not teachers? Who are so humble or so uneducated, so young or so
old, or so deficient in some way - that we cannot learn from them? If we
only take time to listen, who cannot tell us of things we have never
imagined?
Someone advised, "Live each day as if it were your last; learn as if you
were to live forever." And it's so easy when we discover that, in some
way, everyone is a great teacher.

FOOD OF THE WEEK

And You Thought It Was Just a Flower!
It isn't just a flower and hasn't been for centuries but lost it's
health allure sometime in the past!
I thought it would be unique to present you with a food that you've more
than likely never eaten or even referred to as food. There are a minute
number of people who even recognize this as a food! "A rose by any other
name is a rose." That is precisely what this food is, a Rose!
Roses are members of the apple family, and like their relative, they
produce a fruit. The fruit portion of the rose is called the rose hip, a
big seed pod that form on rose canes after it blossoms. Some roses,
especially Rugosa roses, form rose hips that are the size of a quarter!
Wild Roses are found in various places from forests to canyons, logged
wastelands and thickets. There are nine species of Roses, all of which
have edible fruits and flowers, though they are not necessarily tasty.
Then there are a multitude of roses found at your local neighborhood
nursery. There isn't a lacking of roses as it is a most popular flower!
But what about eating it?
Rose hips is the apple of the rose and also a great food! Of course rose
petals make a great looking healthy addition to salads!
Rose Hips, The Healer
Rosehips were found within a body of an English woman buried almost 2000
years ago. Seems the English have enjoyed roses and rosehips since the
beginning of recorded history.
Rosehips have saved many generations from scurvy due to its high Vitamin
C content. Many fine foods have been created using these rose hips.
Probably the most popular being rose hip vinegar but jelly and syrups
are healthy, unique and found in unique stores and homes.
Rose Hips contain more vitamin C, calcium, phosphorus, and iron than
oranges, and sixty times more vitamin C than lemons. Rosehips
also contain a high amount of carotenoids and catchins, isoquercitrin
all from the polyphenol family. These natural occurring chemicals
have great antioxidant activities. Polyphenols also enhance the immune
system, assists in weight loss, lowers cholesterol, and beats up cancer
cells and free radicals that disease the body. Rosehips also contain
maltic acid. Women suffering from Fibromyalgia are almost always found
to be deficient in maltic acid. Herbalist at the turn of century
suggested we all drink a cup of rosehip tea daily. There seems to be
something to that rosy advice.
Rose Hips is used by many to treat infections of the bladder and kidney,
diarrhea, skin problems, colds and flu, sore throat, fatigue,
inflammation, stress, and nervousness. It has also been used to treat
arteriosclerosis, circulatory insufficiencies, contagious disease, and
PMS.
More cosmetic companies are adding rosehip seed oil to their lotions and
facial products. Rose hip seed oil helps to regenerate the skin cells
due to its high content of essential unsaturated fatty acids, oleic
(15-20%), linoleic (44-50%) and linolenic (30-35%). Our body cannot
reproduce these fatty acids, so it has to come from an outside source
and very few foods contain sufficient quantities to help us. Rosehip oil
helps to fade age spots and reduce the signs of aging. It also helps to
reduce scars as well as scars caused by acne.
Here is a really neat tasty Rose Hips recipe that I haven't tried yet
but may have by the time you read this as I intend to make them soon!
Peachy Rosehips Muffins
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup pecans or walnuts
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup fresh or frozen peaches (or canned)
2 eggs
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/3 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup dried seedless rosehips
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Grease twelve 2 3/4" muffin pan cups, or
line them with paper baking cups. In large mixing bowl, combine first
six ingredients. In another bowl, mash peaches with fork, add rosehips
to the mashed peaches, let sit about 10 minutes, then stir in remaining
ingredients. Add peach mixture to flour mixture and stir just until
ingredients are moistened. Spoon the batter into muffin cups. Bake 15 to
18 minutes or until tops are golden.
Recipe from "The Chamomile
Times & Herbal News"
Taken in the recommended doses, Rose Hips is generally safe; however,
taking vitamin C in high doses can cause stomach upset and diarrhea. If
you have kidney stones, consult your physician before using Rose Hips.
Safety in young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with
severe liver or kidney disease is not known.
Enjoy your unique food!
