Greetings! I trust you got through Halloween without too many
tricks! Thank you for being a subscriber!
When I worked the medical offices we had a saying, "The old devil's lack
of originality is showing again!" Meaning that we would see a huge
number of the same identical illness in a day or week then switch to new
one the following day or week. It was almost eerie but we knew the old
devil was at work making people ill and not very original with them. We
joked that he could at least make them different so we could do
something different. Well the same seems to apply with my questions from
readers. When I publish just know that wasn't the only one I received on
that problem, but each person gets a personal reply and then I choose
which one to publish in a really scientific manner. Eeeny, meany, miny,
mo! How's that for scientific?
Steve's Motivator this week speaks to "A GAME YOU'RE INVITED TO PLAY" is

QUESTION:
Hi Lena,
I thought when an ambulance comes to your house that they would relieve
you from pain but they can't do anything but take an EKG to see if you
have a heart attack. Then the ambulance took me to the hospital at 11
p.m. and they put me in a corner of the entrance and there I stayed. To
make a long story short, I checked out AMA at 7:20 am still not being
seen by a doctor. I went home, still in pain, called my doctor and she
could see me at 9am. Then after checking me she said I had
"diverticulitis" again. I had the same thing almost 2 months ago. She
then gave me CIPRO which is an antibiotic. For the pain I am taking
Ibuprofen 800mg. I have had a "CT Scan" of the abdomen that shows only
probable inflammation of the intestines and I am scheduled to have an
ultrasound of the gall bladder. What do you suggest I do?
Thanks,
Jane
ANSWER:
I'm so sorry to hear you aren't feeling well... Diverticulitis can be
very painful... Hospital's can be so cold and uncaring, which it sounds
like you experienced, but they don't know any better...
My suggestion and what I've seen work for diverticulitis;
Make sure you are getting plenty of Probiotics every day. Once you have
had diverticulitis the chances grow that it will crop up again with the
traditional medical treatments since they only know to treat symptoms
and not problems...
Two things to do to eliminate diverticulitis reoccurrence.
1. Get plenty of
Probiotics to keep the intestines working properly in order to kill
inflammation. When the natural flora is low in the intestines it sets
you up for this problem. Without significant natural bacteria in the
intestines to pulverize and aid in digesting the foods you put into it,
this happens? You also need the Probiotics to overcome the CIPRO that
kills the entire natural intestinal flora and sets up the intestines to
have diverticulitis come back again in a few more weeks, just as you
have already experienced. It is a vicious cycle people live with when
treated improperly for diverticulitis... If you have it too often the
infection will eat through the intestine and if you live through that,
you will end up with a colostomy (an outside bag attached to your
intestine to catch fecal matter, bypassing a portion or the intestines),
as most people do if they don't learn how to take care of the intestines
properly...
2.
Ionic Silver Water to prevent the inflammation ('itis' part
that causes the severe pain)... You may still have some slight pain from
time to time when the diverticuli pockets get something lodged in them -
but nothing like when inflamed - before the offending culprit is washed
through. That particular lodging of foods can be prevented by not
eating grains unless they are ground fine, either by your teeth or
before eating and in some people an allergy to wheat can set up an
environment for diverticulosis... But if you keep the natural flora
(probiotics) level high and inflammation away you can live a normal okay
life and not go through that vicious cycle from now on as most people do
when treated with the medical world's idea of treatment... The above
protocol has proven to work for several years now with my
ex-daughter-in-law and several other people that I know...
In a pinch until you get the total probiotic you can drink a glass of
acidophilus milk - in the diary case at the grocery store - daily
that will help the flora in your intestines start to come alive. Of
course it will take a long time for all 500,000 to revive with this
treatment, but it's better than nothing?
For those reading this that does not understand the problem here are
the definitions;
Diverticula; diverticulum: an abnormal pouch or sac
opening from a hollow organ (as the intestine or bladder) or a pocket or
closed branch opening off a main passage.
Diverticulitis; inflammation of a or many diverticulum.
Diverticulosis; an intestinal disorder characterized by the
presence of many diverticula.

A GAME YOU'RE INVITED TO PLAY
The most miserable people live in their own little worlds of isolation.
They do very little for others and rarely have much fun.
I heard of one older gentleman who was considered by the townspeople to
be both rich and thrifty. His austerity earned him the reputation of a
miser. When he died, everyone expected the authorities to find money
stashed everywhere in his home. All they found were a few gallon cans
filled with coins.
It came out that he had used most of his money to help put needy young
students through college. And the coins filled his pockets as he walked
down the streets of the business districts looking for cars whose
parking meters had expired. When he found one, he would drop in a coin.
One of his neighbors commented, "That explains why he looked so happy
and contented!"
Of course! People who go out of their way to help others will always be
happy.
When I lived in Denver, I decided to do the same thing. I always have
more coins in my pockets than I need, so whenever I parked on a busy
street I noticed the parking meters around me. If one was expired, I put
in a coin.
Then I learned something disturbing. It is illegal to do that in Denver!
(The government found a new way to take a bit of fun out of my life....)
Once I learned that I was breaking the law, I quit looking for meters to
feed. And I lost that extra bit of joy I used to receive every time I
anonymously aided a fellow motorist.
I have moved away from Denver now and I just might go back to feeding an
expired meter from time to time. I don't know how the city council feels
about my little gifts to unsuspecting drivers, but I know how it feels
to be unavoidably late returning to a parked car, and worrying about
whether the meter has run out. And if I have to look over my shoulder
before I deposit a coin, then somehow I think that may be more fun! It
can be a game: do something good and don't get caught!
Everyone is allowed to play.

FOOD OF THE WEEK

That golden treasure full of taste and health!
It's that time of year again. The warm, comforting smell of spicy
pumpkin pies and muffins fills our homes, and our summer floral
centerpieces are replaced by playful displays of pumpkins and gourds. A
member of the cucurbits family of fruits. This is one I'm not really
sure about? A fruit? Gourds are supposed to be in the squash family I
thought and since pumpkin is also listed by many as a gourd I don't know
about the fruit aspect. Take this tidbit for what it's worth? I'm
simply telling you what I've found reported in some writer's and
university extension sites.
Pumpkins date back many centuries. The name pumpkin originated from the
Greek word for "large melon" which is "pepon." and was nasalized by the
French into "pompon." The English changed "pompon" to "Pumpion."
Shakespeare referred to the "pumpion" in his Merry Wives of Windsor.
American colonists in turn changed "pumpion" into "pumpkin." The
"pumpkin" is referred to in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Peter, Peter
Pumpkin Eater and Cinderella. It has grown to be a center of attention
in the U.S. at Halloween, not as a food but as a decor. Most assuredly
is much greater for eating!
Native Americans dried strips of pumpkin and wove them into mats. They
also roasted long strips of pumpkin on the open fire and ate them. The
origin of pumpkin pie occurred when the colonists sliced off the pumpkin
top, removed the seeds, and filled the insides with milk, spices and
honey. The pumpkin was then baked in hot ashes. Now that sounds really
good to me and I'm going to try it if I can find one small enough for
two. The early Americans used pumpkin as a pie crust and not a filling.
The bright orange color of pumpkin is a dead giveaway that pumpkin is
loaded with an important antioxidant, beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is
one of the plant carotenoids converted to vitamin A in the body. In the
conversion to vitamin A, beta carotene performs many important functions
in overall health.
Current research indicates that a diet rich in foods containing
beta-carotene may reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer
and offers protect against heart disease. Beta-carotene offers
protection against other diseases as well.
Low in calories and rich in nutrients - 1 cup boiled and drained,
without salt - contains;
Calories 49, Protein 2 grams, Carbohydrate 12 grams, Dietary Fiber 3
grams, Calcium 37 mg, Iron 1.4 mg, Magnesium 22 mg, Potassium 564 mg,
Zinc 1 mg, Selenium .50 mg, Vitamin C 12 mg, Niacin 1 mg, Folate 21 mcg,
Vitamin A 2650 IU, and Vitamin E 3 mg.
Pumpkin seeds are rich in nutrients as well as very tasty and one of my
youngest daughter's favorite things. She makes many jack-o-lanterns
every Halloween just so she can dig the seeds out and roast them.
Pumpkin flowers are also edible and many love them, I'm told. I found
recipes for pumpkin flower soup, deep fried pumpkin flowers and stuffed
pumpkin flowers. Rather unique but I haven't tried any of them. May do
that one day.
Pumpkins were once recommended for removing freckles and curing snake
bites, of which I am a bit skeptical that it worked very well? No
history to know for sure?
Native American Indians made an emulsion from a mixture of pumpkin and
watermelon seeds that served to heal wounds for members of the Yuma
tribe. The Catawbas ate the fresh or dried seeds as a kidney medicine,
while the Menominees drank a mixture of water and powdered squash and
pumpkin seeds to ease the passage of urine. In settler folk medicine the
ground stems of pumpkin were brewed into a tea to treat "female ills,"
and the ripe seeds were made into a palatable preparation to dispel
worms.
Pumpkin was used in folk medicine to treat kidney inflammation and
intestinal parasites and was once listed as one of the Four
Greater Cold Seeds in an 18th century list of medicines. Today
pumpkin is employed to treat irritable bladder and prostate complaints,
namely benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The fatty oil in pumpkin
seeds is mildly diuretic, and the seeds' principal constituent,
cucurbitacins, appears to inhibit the conversion of testosterone into
dihydrotesterone. The presence of zinc and amino acids further treat BPH.
Pumpkin is not said to reduce prostate enlargement but to relieve
symptoms only. Pumpkin seeds are also thought to help relieve dizziness.
Pumpkin seeds are taken principally as a safe deworming agent. They are
particularly useful against tapeworms in pregnant women and in children,
for whom stronger-acting and toxic preparations are unsuitable. The
seeds are also mildly diuretic, and have been used in Central American
herbal medicine as a treatment for nephritis and other urinary system
problems. Varieties of pumpkin that are particularly diuretic, tonic to
the bladder, and high in zinc have been recommended in the early stages
of prostate problems. The pulp is used as a decoction to relieve
intestinal inflammation, and is applied as a poultice or plaster for
burns.
So these gold globes have many uses and medicinal content. Eat and enjoy
the traditional pumpkin pie.
My Pumpkin Pie recipe that combines the health of soy to the pumpkins
other great health inducing nutrients;
Makes two pies
1 box of silken firm tofu, drained
2 cups of fresh pumpkin puree or canned pumpkin
1 1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground dry ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoons nutmeg
2 - 9" pie crusts
Heat oven to 375 degrees F.
Put tofu and pumpkin in a food processor or blender and blend on high
until smooth and creamy, about four minutes. Stop the machine every once
in a while to scrape large pieces of tofu down into the machine's
blades. Add rest of ingredients and blend well...The result should be a
light orange-colored creamy paste with no lumps of tofu.
Pour into uncooked pie crusts;
Bake 40 to 60 minutes or until the crusts are dark brown (but not
burned).
PS: Sometimes, after I pour the pie filling into the crusts, I will line
the outer edge of the pie with pecan halves all around it and bake.
Gives a slightly decorative look as well as a really neat flavor?
Enjoy your healthy treat!
