QUESTION #1:
 
In Jordan Rubin's Book the "Maker's Diet", he states that paraffin candles contain highly toxic materials such as formaldehyde, chloroform, lead vapor, arsenic and countless other toxins.  My daughter was the one to buy his book and we have both enjoyed it, but unfortunately she loves burning candles.  My "google" question brought me to your site, but I couldn't find anything on it.  So I am asking you if you have even more detailed information/studies, etc. that you can email me so we can back Rubin's information up and (hopefully) really convince my daughter to stop burning candles in her bedroom or wait until the summer when the window can be opened.

Thank you for your question Becky.

Get her Soy or beeswax candles with natural color and essential oil scented only. They cost a bit more but are safer... The ones you find in most stores are indeed dangerous to her and anyone else in the house, as they are made with petroleum based wax...

Here is info on regular average petroleum wax candles;

Candle burning may result in emissions of substances such as:
*polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
*volatile organics (e.g., benzene)
*lead
*aliphatic hydrocarbons
*cycloparaffins

The organic compounds produced and released during candle burning have been shown to be dependent on the type of wax the candle is made from and the inclusion of lacquers, color and scents in the candle formulation.

Awareness of residential black soot deposition due to low air turnover rates and/or poor ventilation.

Increasing concern that use of scented candles will lead to deleterious health effects. But it is still too early to know as no studies have been done or are being done at this time... We do have statistics regarding illness and cancer caused by the chemicals emitted from average candles and can know that there is danger there...

Candle soot shares many of the properties of soot produced by burning diesel fuel, including emitted and an insoluble carbon core structure. However, carcinogenic PAHs, notable constituents of diesel particulate matter, have not been detected, or are present only at low levels, in candle soot.
 
To burn a beeswax candle is to enter into the wisdom world of the bee, as you enter into a world of benefits from the bee. Compare this to breathing toxic fumes from paraffin candles! (For more on toxic candles, see Candle Soot.

Clean the Air By Burning Beeswax Candles;

Air contains billions of electrically charged particles called ions. Ions act upon our capacity to absorb and utilize oxygen, and therefore cause powerful effects on our lives and well being. The ions in the air can affect our mood, energy and health. Negative ions actually feel good. Too many positive ions make us feel bad and they are loaded down with pollution and allergens that are drawn to them and suspended in the air... Negative ions, on the other hand, remove the pollution and allergens from positive ions, allowing them to drop harmlessly to the ground.

Beeswax candle fuel is the only fuel that actually produces negative ions, which not only helps remove pollution from the air but increases the ratio of negative ions to positive ions, the ideal and necessary scenario for clean air.

I hope this helps convince her that she needs to use safe candles.

Really enjoy your newsletter and refer to it frequently.
The question I have (can't seem to get any solid response) is could I use silver water to spray or soak fruits and vegetables to neutralize the chemicals and pesticides? Other suggestion rather than "organic"?

Hi Al,

Thanks for the question and for being a faithful reader...
 
Last question first; You cannot neutralized the chemicals/pesticides in fruits or vegetables... They are there to stay deep inside?

Sure, if you suspect a bacteria or virus on them you can use Silver Water (1 Tablespoon per quart of warm water) to spray or wash/soak veggies/fruits but only to remove a bacteria/virus left from handling or pesticides sprayed on just before harvest. Most non-organic produce is covered with a wax coating or contamination from packing handlers that requires only soap and water to remove... Fruits and veggies are usually sprayed with pesticides very close to harvest and therein lays another need for washing them, but that removes only a minute amount that is actually part of them... The real health danger is chemicals and pesticides that are used to grow the produce and is absorbed and permanently become part of the produce... Silver water is a bacterial/viral killer not to remove chemicals or pesticides, although it could if it was just a surface problem, which it isn't... The insides of fruits/veggies carry the majority of the chemicals/pesticides... You cannot wash out what is contained inside of them as non-organic produce gets great amounts of pesticides and herbicides fed them throughout their growing and becomes part of them.  I wish I could give you a good answer and say sure you can remove the chemicals/pesticides from them with washing, but you can't. Organic really is the only way to get the healthiest and cleanest possible produce, but even they require washing to remove handling residue and you can use the above ratio of silver water!

The Christmas Fruit
 
This one fruit seems to make its appearance around Christmas time in more homes than usual. It might just be because they are coming into harvest or it has been passed down from generation to generation as the fruit to put in every child's stocking. Whatever the reason that they occupy a place of honor for this time of the year that orange ball is healthy, nutritious and a very enjoyable food.
 
An orange is more effective than dark-green, leafy vegetables in increasing serum concentrations of retinol and beta-carotene.
 
There are various types of oranges.
 
The orange has a sweet-sour taste and is commonly peeled and eaten fresh, or squeezed for its juice. The outer-most layer of the rind is called orange zest, and it has a similar flavor to the inner part of the orange. The rind is very high in nutrients and can be used in cooking, cleaning or eating. When the oil is removed from the orange rind it is a very effective non-toxic cleaning and polishing agent. Orange oil is used as a wood treatment for preserving and naturally beautifying it.
 
One naval orange provides 130% of your daily Vitamin C. This powerful antioxidant protects the body from the effects of stress, pollution and disease. Unlike some vitamins, Vitamin C cannot be stored by the body, so it must be replenished regularly. Oranges supply 80 fat-free calories packed with energizing carbohydrates that fuel energy levels.
 
Oranges supply Vitamin C, flavonoids and folate as well as fiber and many other vitamins and minerals that bolster the immune system and contribute to overall health, which is especially important during cold and flu season.
 
One serving of oranges or grapefruit contain 1g of protein and the mineral zinc, which can bolster the immune system and help fight off the negative effects of stress and help ward off illness and diseases.
 
The fruit originated in India or Vietnam, depending on who you listen to. It was called na rangi in Sanskrit. The na rangi or naranja was translated as "norange", and in English usage a norange was back-formed into the more acceptable an orange. The same thing happened in French and Italian, but in Spanish it is still naranja.
 
A number of varieties of orange are now cultivated in many parts of the world, usually in warmer climates. The sweet navel orange - Citrus aurantium - was first grown in Spain, and has become the most popular variety. The sweet orange will grow to different sizes and colors due to local conditions, most commonly with ten slices inside. I have not bothered to count the segments inside an orange so maybe that's true and maybe not? I have more important things to do than count segments!
 
The Valencia or Murcia orange is one of the sweet oranges used for juice. It is a late-season fruit and is the most popular orange when the navel oranges are out of season.
 
The blood orange has streaks of red in the fruit, and when squeezed the juice is often reddish. The blood orange, with it's sweet, deep red colored flesh, is thought to be the result of a mutation that occurred in 17th century Sicily. In most varieties of blood orange even the pulp and skin is slightly sweet, and not bitter.
The mandarin is similar, but smaller and sweeter. The mandarin orange is considered a native of south-eastern Asia and the Philippines. It is most abundantly grown in Japan, southern China, India, Mexico and the East Indies, and is esteemed for home consumption in Australia. Mandarin is a group name for a class of oranges with thin, loose peel, which have been dubbed "kid-glove" oranges. These are treated as members of a distinct species, Citrus reticulata Blanco. The name "tangerine" could be applied as an alternate name to the whole group, but, in the trade, is usually confined to the types with red-orange skin. In the Philippines all mandarin oranges are called naranjita. Spanish-speaking people in the American tropics call them mandarina. There are a multitude of different named Mandarin oranges.
 
My grandchildren's favorite breakfast is
 
Orange French Toast;
 
Ingredients;
3 eggs beaten
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
1/4  teaspoon orange zest
1/2 cup soy milk
1 Tablespoon melted Butter
6-8 Whole wheat bread slices
 
1) Beat first six ingredients together in bowl until well mixed.
2) Heat griddle.
3) Dip bread slices in mixture coating both sides.
4) Cook on butter coated or non-stick griddle until lightly browned. If you like your French toast slightly sweeter lightly sprinkle with powdered sugar. For a more cinnamon taste sprinkle with sugar and ground cinnamon before serving. (I keep a salt shaker with cinnamon/granulated sugar mixture on hand for this purpose. 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon to 1/4 cup sugar.)
 
Serve hot with fruit or syrup of choice. (Our favorite is sliced peaches or sliced strawberries or Mandarin Orange slices replacing the syrup) any one works well and tastes great without the sickening sweet syrup to throw the insulin pump out of kilter for hours.
