 ASK LENA HEALTH Q & A EDITION!

=========
Tomorrow is my husband's 73rd birthday but nobody believes he is that old. Why? He has practiced great health prevention for years. Nothing huge or hard to do... He loves working outdoors so he gets plenty of daily sunshine and exercise, healthy 80% vegan diet, balanced mineral supplements and herbal formulas from Dr. Wayne Garland. Can you say that...

The answers to questions submitted to me each week come from my 20+ years as a Medical Office Nurse along with many years and ongoing education in nutritional and alternative treatment modes. Add that to many years of friendship with Dr. Wayne Garland, a very knowledgeable naturopath and herbologist, who many years ago, beat his cancer death sentence given by the traditional medical world, has helped along the alternatives path and hopefully help to give hope to those who need it... Also receiving a lot of study reports and try to ascertain if they are good or bad then report them to you, which has increased my knowledge along the way and I pass them on to you to use or not...

I am not a doctor or dentist and you should not think of me as one!!
My years observing life and health of the many people/patients around me and the contradictions of the traditional medical world's idea of treating - prescription domino effect - while watching those same schooled methods that aren't relieving illness but creating far more health problems than they help. Those same medical professionals aren't telling people how to get healthy or how to prevent illness, which led me to look for something to change that premise for myself and those around me. In looking outside the Westernized medical profession I found and continue to find alternatives that really work to create health and longevity - when adhered to - beyond anything the traditional medical world can do...

QUESTION:

Hi Lena,
I am a male in my mid 40's and my latest cholesterol reading was 265 and my doctor is saying some pretty harsh things while trying to force me to take a cholesterol lowering prescription. I filled the first prescription for Lipitor but read the insert, which made up my mind for me, in small print said; "Has not been shown to prevent or protect from heart disease or stroke." So I figured my chances of being healthy were greater without it than with it and it still sits on my counter unopened. I also read one of your articles that stated that "60 plus people who die from heart attack, heart disease or stroke have normal to low cholesterol readings," which enforced my thoughts at not taking the drugs. He said to me; if he had the authority he would force me to take the medication and wanted me to understand my risk of heart attack caused by the cholesterol. Obviously he hasn't read the insert that goes with Lipitor. Sometimes I think maybe he's right and I should  cave in and take the medication with this reading..  Could you again explain to me why I shouldn't take these medications?
Thanks,
Dick

ANSWER:

Thank you Dick for the question.

Are you sure you aren't seeing my husband's VA doctor? He sounds very much like the one that has tried to force my husband to take cholesterol medications for years and made a statement very much like your doctor did. I know how hard it is to stand up to a doctor and say, "This is my body and I will put into it or not put into it what I please."  That freedom comes about when you realize they are only human and not God who could strike you dead if you don't obey them... I'm not a doctor nor do I want you to think I know everything as I don't anymore than any other person...

Should you cave in? I don't believe so, but it's your decision to make and not mine. I believe that every person has a cholesterol number that is going to vary according to what his/her body requires. I published an article on Medications and the Dangers you might like to read... Also, last weeks my Natural Health Education & Home Business Facts ezine had an article that named some other problems with lower cholesterol. To read it Click here

Cholesterol is a requirement to having a healthy body - as my article told you - too low is very dangerous and bad for anyone, just as excessively too high is. Most excessively high cholesterol is triggered by blood pressure reducing medications, arthritis medications and some heart medications as well as prolonged stress. Then yes you would want to lower it. But under 300 can be normal for a large part of the population and yours is in that range. When I worked medical offices I would occasionally, 2 or 3 a year, draw blood from a patient who had milky white (fatty) blood and knew that was bad. Anyone with that type of blood, I believe whatever it takes to bring that down should be done, but only if that person is not under excessive stress or pain and should confirm that fatty blood with a second blood draw - once the stress, pain, etc. is under control - to confirm the exaggerated level... That level will be above 500, as a rule.

Also those years in the medical office I almost never saw anyone with a normal cholesterol count that the drug industry is now trying to achieve "150 or below"... So that fact alone would lead me to believe that anything less than 150 is too low and anything from 200 to 325 is normal, this was confirmed to me by a statement by an Osteopathic doctor I worked with when the first lowered level was released the medical world. When 250 to 325 levels were considered normal there were far fewer people dying with heart attacks and strokes, which coincidentally began happening in the last 20 to 25 years of lowering the cholesterol numbers requirements...

Let me you tell you about my husband and his family's experiences and it might help you make your decision to take the drug or not; In my husbands mid-thirties his cholesterol reading was over 800 and his triglycerides were 1200. That is grossly out of line for anyone and should not be that high, but he was going through a couple of weeks with kidney stones with severe pain and the stress he put on himself with the fear of surgery and pain medications that took their toll elevating his cholesterol. Stress, pain and medications can do and he needed it lowered but didn't happen until he was free of pain, stress and pain medications. This was at the very beginning of cholesterol lowering medication release to the market. He took the medication for a few months until I had to triage calls from patients in our office that were experiencing horrific side effects after starting the cholesterol lowering drugs as well as I watched other side effects caused by them, so I encouraged him to stop taking the drug, which he did... Didn't make an iota's difference in his cholesterol numbers either! At that point his cholesterol was only down to 340 - 380 with a combination of diet changes and the medications, didn't change when stopped the drug. That was in the early 80's when cholesterol drugs were just coming on the market and becoming the money maker they are.  The Internist I worked with at that time
by the end of the first year refused to prescribe the drugs to any of his patients  due to the side effects - unless their levels were way over the top - watching what was happening to those patients after taking the drugs convinced him... Lots of muscle and tendon wasting with severe pain and increased arthritis cases... Those are the only short term side effects...

I wish I had known about the liquid balanced minerals at that time as some of the patients pain and problems could have been eliminated and the lingering damage that was caused from the medication bone, muscle and tendon wasting... But I only learned about them in the early 90's after leaving active medical office.

Anyway, my husband's cholesterol has run anywhere from 270 to 360 ever since, that's more than 25 years now. Three years ago his doctor said he heard a bruit (lessened blood flow in the carotid artery) and wanted to rush him into surgery (roto rooter the artery) but we first wanted to see an arterial specialist who did an Ultrasound and MRI, at our insistence, and found that my husbands arteries are cleaner than most with no plaque build up. The arterial specialist opinion was that the artery may have been a bit kinked when the doctor listened to it. He said that is a frequent occurrence. Now I wonder how many have had an Endarterectomy (cleaning of the neck/carotid artery) without needing it? I don't believe my husband is all that unique in this happening, bearing out what the Internist that I worked for believed, as do I, cholesterol isn't a marker for heart disease or clogged arteries, which they claim in advertising yet disclaim on the inserts. Many Medical Scientists have written that inflammation is a stronger reason for heart disease and stroke, not cholesterol, but the drug companies can't afford to believe them as it would take billions of dollars out of their pockets.

My husband's mother and most of his siblings have what is considered elevated cholesterol. Sadly the ones who have chosen to take the lowering drugs have had bypasses and other severe health issues that I believe comes from the drugs not the cholesterol. I can say that his mother, my husband and a couple of sisters have refused the drugs and are in better health than those who chose the drugs. Mom died of old age at 93 years. His sisters fight their doctors because they refuse the drug. One sister had taken the cholesterol lowering drugs - took several different one as the side effects she experienced was equally bad and after three months of debilitating pain and inability to think she stopped taking them and became whole again once she started the balanced minerals...

How to be as heart healthy as possible at your age

Pay attention to your mouth and sinus health rather than cholesterol lowering. See your dentist and make sure your gums are healthy and have root canals as a last resort, as infection can grow in the canal after surgery and makes for a lingering inflammation that can reach your arteries putting you at risk. Same with a sinus infection make sure that the sinuses are healthy and drain properly as they too can harbor bacteria/virus/fungal infections... There are some healthy alternatives to doing both... Take care of those things and don't worry so much about cholesterol. Here is a link to a booklet written by a scientist friend who worked in the pharmaceutical end of science but left for more independent studies... His shocking ebook surrounding cholesterol lowering drugs can be downloaded for FREE at www.health-fx.net/eBook.pdf

If your cholesterol goes above 350, then yes do something to lower it! Such as exercise, sunshine daily and diet and if that doesn't do it go with herbs and nutrients.. Try Dr. Wayne Garland's Cholestine Cholesterol Lowering herbal formula. And for prevention of any health issue everyone over the age of 10 should be taking
Balanced Liquid minerals to assist your organs function...

Enjoy your life
Lena

Antidepressants and Gastrointestinal Bleeding!

Researchers compared more than 1,000 people who had been treated for gastrointestinal bleeding with another group who hadn't experienced GI bleeding,  "they found that the risk…was significantly higher among people taking antidepressants in the popular selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class. Some of those are; Zoloft, Cipralex, Seroxat, Paxil, Parotin, Aropax, Xetanor, ParoMerck, Rexetin. GI bleeding was also found in those taking the serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) venlafaxine (marketed as Effex)."  Some of those names are; venlafaxine (tradenames Effexor XR, Effexor),  Pristiq, Meridia, Reductil, Serzone, Dalcipran, Ixel, Norpramine, Pertofraneis, Cymbalta and bicifadine. Just to name a few.

This is just one more good reason to steer clear of antidepressant drugs. But that doesn't mean you need to grin and bear it through the lows of depression as there are botanical/herbals out there that work better than the chemical ones.

BRINGING HARMONY TO DISCORD

I once talked with a couple about their marriage. They completed personality "testing" and were discussing some differences that had frustrated them both over the years. I summarized some of those differences for them.

"You are sensitive," I said to the husband. He nodded affirmatively. "You try to keep harmony in the relationship. It is important to you that you don't have too much conflict, so you tend to give in often in order to keep the peace." He agreed.

"You like affection and will often reach out and hold your wife's hand for no reason at all." He smiled and nodded.

"And you remember birthdays and special days - these are important to you." He continued to smile and nod.

"And you particularly appreciate it when she says, 'I love you.' In fact, you need her to say that at least once a day."

"EXACTLY!" he exclaimed with a broad smile, looking at his wife.

Then I spoke to her. "And you appreciate his sensitivity, but you tend to be more rational and logical." She smiled and nodded.

"You can be more objective than he can about personal criticism and may sometimes be too blunt with him." They both agreed.

"You like affection, but you don't require it like he does. If you hold hands or not, that is unimportant to you." She continued to nod.

"And you also appreciate the fact that he remembers those special days, but if he were to forget one, that would not upset you. In fact, you have to remember to say, 'I love you' to him, not because you don't love him, but because saying it is just something you don't think about often." She agreed, looking at her husband.

"Saying words like 'I love you' does not mean the same thing to you as it does to him. You know you love him. In fact, you looked into his eyes when you got married and said, 'I love you' and figured that, if you ever change your mind, you'll let him know."

"EXACTLY!" she exclaimed, with a smile.

They told me that the discussion helped them to simply understand one another and to accept themselves. Rather than trying to change the other to get their own needs met, they could more easily appreciate their differences and also appreciate themselves as they are.

They found harmony where there used to be discord.

We don't get harmony when everybody sings the same note. Only notes that are different can harmonize. The same is true with people.
