I think today's question is a very interesting yet hopefully not a problem seen very often although I have found if someone asks a question a dozen more will not ask it for fear of sounding dumb. There are no dumb questions and hopefully I can allay those fears of asking.

The answers to questions submitted to me each week come from my 20+ years as a Medical Office Nurse along with many years and ongoing education in nutritional and alternative treatment modes. Add that to many years of friendship with Dr. Wayne Garland, a very knowledgeable naturopath and herbologist, who many years ago, beat his cancer death sentence given by the traditional medical world, has helped along the alternatives path and hopefully help to give hope to those who need it... Also receiving a lot of study reports and try to ascertain if they are good or bad then report them to you, which has increased my knowledge along the way and I pass them on to you to use or not...

I am not a doctor or dentist and you should not think of me as one!!
My years observing life and health of the many people/patients around me and the contradictions of the traditional medical world's idea of treating - prescription domino effect - while watching those same schooled methods that aren't relieving illness but creating far more health problems than they help. Those same medical professionals aren't telling people how to get healthy or how to prevent illness, which led me to look for something to change that premise for myself and those around me. In looking outside the Westernized medical profession I found and continue to find alternatives that really work to create health and longevity - when adhered to - beyond anything the traditional medical world can do...

QUESTION:
 
Lena, If My Calcium Is High on a Hair Analysis, why would anyone recommend I take more Calcium? That is what my Naturopath says I need. This totally floors me. What would you say to that? My calcium is so extremely high, why would I want to take more calcium? I am not sure her answer was something I can believe. I was not totally convinced or satisfied with her answer of taking more calcium. I find your newsletter so informative and making sense that I hope you can give me peace of mind with this problem. What do you recommend?

ANSWER:

Thank you for your nice comment and I hope I can help ease your mind and will try to explain so you can understand.
 
You don't say how old you are and I hope you are not under 70 years of age. If you are beyond 70 and have not experienced dental, bone or major illness or disease problems up to now it will not be quite so urgent, but if you are less than 70 you really must do something SOON! If your elevated calcium levels continue you are looking forward to all kinds of bone, and dental problems not to mention the need for calcium and other minerals to produce healthy cells in your body that without healthy cells your body can have some really severe illness and/or disease with incompetent cell building capability. So I do hope you take care of it ASAP. That said I will direct my attention to trying to alleviate your concerns. Your naturopath is correct but if that's all she said then I feel she is missing some things to truly correct the problem.
 
The body gets one chance at assimilating (absorbing and distributing) nutrients that you have just eaten as food or consumed in a supplement! Your body cannot recapture and assimilate those nutrients once it passes that point. After digestion - around 45 minutes to one hour - taking in foods or supplements they are lost and go elsewhere and your body will eliminate them as useless even if they aren't.
 
Because calcium is used in almost every function of the body, yet it is commonly deficient in our diets and one of the first mineral elements to go out of balance when the diet is inadequate. So make sure you are eating properly and not a lot of fast foods, prepackaged foods or sugary fatty foods. Eating a diet mainly consisting of any or all of those foods will create severe digestive problems as well as not give you sufficient calcium needed. I feel that probably isn't your problem since your hair calcium levels are high, indicating your are taking in plenty of calcium. You don't mention taking magnesium or other minerals along with the calcium.

Why the elevated calcium levels in your hair?
 
If you have not properly digested and assimilated your foods or supplements the body then recognizes them as useless or not needed at that time and passed out of assimilation unused, even when they weren't utilized. Your body cannot go back and find the supplements or nutrients floating around outside of your bones
- namely calcium and possibly magnesium in your situation - and drag it back into the body's areas of need.
 
What your high hair calcium levels are telling you is that your body isn't using the calcium and possibly magnesium you are taking into your body and your body is dumping it out. In your case dumping the calcium into your hair. This says that your bones, teeth and gums are not keeping the calcium that you are feeding yourself. This very fact points to your digestive system not functioning as it should and you will need to take extra calcium for a while, if you follow my advice. But most likely once you have done what I am going to tell you to do you may not need extra calcium after a few weeks. That is an IF at this moment. Not all digestive problems can be corrected, if this has been from childhood or through a genetic defect, which I have no way of knowing, but given a few months of supplements I am going to recommend. Your digestive tract - made up of both the stomach and miles of intestinal tract - will give us an idea if this is a new problem or a lifetime problem.
 
If you have not done so already Read the ABC's of Minerals as there is some really IMPORTANT INFORMATION in that article in regards to calcium and other minerals as well as help you understand calcium's job in your body.
 
Here are my suggestions;
 
First and most importantly, a Balanced mineral supplement daily, as this will kick start the whole body into a better balance. This contains the balance of magnesium and calcium to allow proper assimilation in a healthy body but yours is not totally healthy so there are other things you need to do. It also gives a host of other necessary minerals to your body's health.
SUGGESTED DIRECTIONS; Week 1;  1/2  teaspoon, mixed with juice (tomato, V8, lemon, carrot, beet or cucumber works best) - MIX WELL-  in the MORNING and 1/2 teaspoon  in juice at NOON or up to 4PM. (Do not mix with orange or grapefruit juice as those two create an absorption problem and the minerals cannot give you the maximum absorption)
Week 2;  3/4 teaspoon in juice twice a day.
Week 3 and thereafter;  1 teaspoon in juice twice a day as this provides the essential balance of minerals for the body, making it possible to absorb vitamins and nutrients properly.
 
Second, it appears that your digestive tract is not function properly and missing digestive enzymes and probiotics, that is required for proper digestion and assimilation. Digestive enzymes come from fresh raw fruits and vegetables and if you do not eat sufficient organic quantity daily your stomach will get distressed and in turn makes for unhealthy intestinal tract. When the stomach cannot prepare the foods for your intestinal system to assimilate properly that system cannot function and will be badly in need of sufficient good bacteria (probiotics) which will prevent assimilating of your food and supplements.
SUGGESTED DIRECTIONS; Take 1 at the beginning of each meal, this furnishes the digestive enzymes for the stomach to prepare foods and supplements to go into the intestinal system. Then take 2 at bedtime on an empty stomach to enrich the probiotic (natural flora) in the intestinal tract.
 
Third, and only until we can determine if you need it Liquid Calcium, which can be absorbed immediately making it less likely to pass through your system unassimilated.
SUGGESTED DIRECTIONS; 1 teaspoon morning and evening with or without food. This will give you the added calcium your body most likely needs to help overcome the shortage it has been experiencing. How long you will need to take extra calcium is only a guess but most generally six weeks is sufficient IF there isn't a chronic digestive problem and your diet is good.
 
These steps can possibly correct your situation and at the least balance your absorption systems and give your body the necessary tools to work better and stop the calcium loss that can prevent any ongoing or oncoming problems.

C-diff (Clostridium difficile) is a bacterium that can trigger digestive inflammation and diarrhea so severe that some cases result in death. But gastric acid actually protects the stomach from C-diff. So when drugs are used to neutralize or suppress gastric acid, the stage is set for C-diff to flourish. I believe a family can be like that sports team. A successful family wins as a team. But if its members are intent upon winning their own individual battles with one another, the team loses.

A winning solution is to work out the differences and, when it's over, let it be over. Then they can get back in the game as a team.
