I answer all health questions to the best of my ability using what I gleaned from 20-years as a Medical Office Nurse and Administrator along with my education in nutritional and alternative modes. I am not a doctor and you should not think of me as one. Just lived many years of life while  observing life and the world around me...

Q & A is for your information and education only and in some instances to give you a different perspective on a particular problem!

My wish for you, in the use of the information gained here, is that you will apply it in a smart and safe manner in order to enhance your life and not harm it! Not to be used in place of your judgment but in  addition to... Even though I daily watch people become healthy with the information imparted nothing works 100% of the time for 100% of people...

I have always felt that I had to know all sides to a problem and then make a decision for myself and I hope that will be your attitude as well!

ANSWER:

In this day of drugging kids to calm them down a few things are being overlooked; 1. Exercise, is the child getting sufficient exercise outside the classroom? In this day of computer games, Game Boy, Xboy, etc. the child's exercise is being missed and creating a lot of problems with the body saying give me exercise that is appearing as hyperactive, yet isn't... 2. Sleep; is the child getting sufficient rest at night? It takes 9 - 10 hours of sleep for a growing child to keep the brain healthy... 3. Additives/Processed foods; is the child consuming a lot of sugary foods/drinks or processed foods or color additives with processed foods/drinks? These all make a HUGE difference in a child's behavior...

You might also mention to your neighbor that having the child, or anyone for that matter, eat as much raw fruits and vegetables, daily, as he will eat, is also a great brain and body  builder, preferably organic to eliminate the chemicals...

If they are doing all those things but not sufficient improvement then there are supplements that are proving to help a great number of children with ADD and ADHD as well as older people with senile dementia and Alzheimer's symptoms... (Yes, we have (SNF) skilled nursing facility patients that have the SNF employees puzzled at the positive calming change in behavior after patient's start taking these.) Those alternatives that we have found turning children and adult lives around by adding the following simple things to their daily life; Life Transfusion Liquid Minerals 1 teaspoon twice a day, Mind Power Master Formula directions accompany them for child or adult, this is very potent and has to be started slowly and work up to a proper dosage... Tolerance Stress Formula 1 capsule three times a day, to help calm them down without drugging them, which is what the medications given them is doing without correcting the problem... We (Alternative health care providers) believe the brain must be nourished properly, electrical waves totally working and completed while given nutrients to strengthen, work sufficiently and provide retention power, not just calm it down without healing, as in traditional drug therapy does.. This protocol does all those things...

One mother was so elated when telling me about her son's turnaround that she broke into tears telling me that by the third day, her 12 year old, became almost a normal calm child and stopped bouncing off the ceiling, by the end of the first week she could see the bright eyes and smile on his face that he had not had in years. His grades improved so much she was totally flabbergasted, her word... This same child has been "enjoying life" for 10 years since starting and continuing the supplements... We have a few children who have needed to add the Shark Liver Oil capsules to their diet to make a complete turn around... I'm not saying 100% of those who take these will change completely, but 100% will have improvement in their health and marked improvement in behavior...

I don't know how the school will react, as each is different but once they see a difference in the child they should be happy... It's the child's doctor that they will most likely have problems with...

Regards,
Lena

A CONSPIRACY OF KINDNESS

My friend Randy Jessen tells this true story of love and kindness. It is a little longer than our usual fare, but I think you will find it well worth reading!

If you had to choose one word to describe Kevin, it might be "slow." Kevin didn't learn his ABCs as fast as other kids. He never came in first in the schoolyard races. However, Kevin had a special rapport with people. His bright smile and big heart won him plenty of friends.

When Kevin discovered that the pastor at his church, Randy Jessen, was putting together a boys basketball team, his mother let him participate. And soon basketball became a center of Kevin's life. He worked hard at practice. While the other boys practiced dribbling and lay-ups, Kevin shot baskets. He had a special spot near the free throw line. He threw and threw the ball, and it occasionally went in! When that happened, Kevin raised his arms and shouted, "Look at me, Coach!"

The day before their first game, Coach Randy gave each player a bright red jersey. Kevin was number 12. He scrambled himself into the sleeves and wore that jersey almost every day. One Sunday morning, the church service was interrupted by Kevin's excited voice. "Look, Coach!" He lifted his gray wool sweater to reveal the red jersey underneath with number 12 on the front. Nobody minded the interruption; the church knew Kevin and loved him.

I'd like to be able to tell you that the team did well. Actually, they never won a game that season -- except for the night it snowed and the other team never showed up. At the end of the season, the boys played in the church league's tournament. As the last-place team, they drew the unfortunate spot of playing against the first-place team -- boys who had never lost a game all year.

The game went as expected, and near the end of the fourth quarter Kevin's team stood nearly 30 points behind. It was then that one of the boys called timeout. "Coach," he said, "this is our last game and Kevin's never made a basket. I think we should let him make a basket." The team agreed. Kevin was instructed to stand at his special place near the free throw line and wait. He was told that when he was given the ball, he should shoot.

Kevin was ecstatic. He ran to the floor and waited. When the ball was passed to him he shot -- and missed. Number 17 from the other team snatched the rebound, dribbled down the court for an easy lay-up. But a moment later Kevin got the ball again. He shot -- and missed. Number 17 repeated his performance for another two points. Kevin shot a third and fourth time with the same result.

But then the other team seemed to figure out what was going on and the next time they snatched the rebound, they threw it to Kevin! Kevin shot...and missed. But now every rebound came to him and he threw and threw toward the basket.

BOTH teams had circled Kevin by this time and all of the boys were shouting, "Kevin! Kevin!" The crowd took up the chant. Soon everyone in the gym was shouting for Kevin! Coach Randy was sure the game should have been over by this time and he glanced at the clock. It was stopped at 4.3 seconds! The timekeepers were standing by their table shouting with the crowd, "Kevin! Kevin!" The world had stopped for Kevin. He shot and shot and finally one of his shots took a crazy bounce on the rim and...went in! Chaos reigned! Everyone stood and cheered as if one boy had single-handedly won a world championship. Kevin's arms sprang up in the air and he shouted, "I won! I won!" His team escorted him off the court, the clock ticked down and the game was over.

That day an undefeated team retained their perfect record. But everybody won. Everybody! Because everybody had participated in a crazy conspiracy of kindness, a simple act of mercy, that was so compelling, so powerful, that I'm sure all of heaven rejoiced!

FOOD OF THE WEEK

Another great springtime green for detoxing and cleansing the body of its winter residue!

Phytolacca americana aka Poke Salat aka Pokeweed

During my years of living in Oklahoma as a young child there was a spring ritual that we took part in that produced a tasty and healthy green dish. It was known to us as "poke salat pickin time". This tasty green popular wild food is found mostly in the eastern half and southern part of the United States but can be found in the western portion in some areas. Each year as spring approaches I start to hunger for these tasty greens. Mother nature produces some great free food if you know where to look for it… These days with the population so exploded it's harder to find but bet your grand mother will know where to find them!

Some so-called smart people will tell you not to eat Poke Salat, but they also will tell you that processed foods are good for you and your body can be healthy without vitamins and minerals so I totally discount their recommendations!

We didn't start that ritual! Native Americans introduced the plant to the early European settlers and fast became such a popular pot herb that seeds soon were being cultivated back in Europe. After a long winter without fresh food, the early settlers looked forward to cooking the first tender green leaves of pokeweed. It gave them vitamins while providing a good spring cleansing tonic. They'd cook it up with Lamb's Quarters – another of my favorite wild greens - and Dock, which are also early spring greens. Some people today still cook and eat poke greens in the early spring although fast food is overshadowing healthy eating that I fear this green will lose it's appeal in future generations. Growing up it was simply understood that everyone ate greens and liked them but now most children have never tasted a green food or if they have most have chosen to dislike them.

Salat is the German word for salad, and probably came with German settlers. In towns you'll find pokeweed growing wild in alleyways and vacant lots. In the country it grows in the fence rows and along the edges of woods. When mature, in mid and late summer, it has clusters of shiny purple berries which birds love to eat. Poke is poisonous in uncooked stage and cannot be eaten raw in salads!

Pokeweed is a large and coarse herbaceous weed with big leaves, a stout reddish trunk, widely branching reddish stems, and elongated erect clusters of small white flowers that give way to drooping clusters of dark purple berries. The leaves are smooth, long and taper at both ends.  As the season progresses all parts of the plant take on more of a reddish or purplish hue. Pokeberry is an herbaceous perennial that dies back in winter and grows quickly in spring Mature leaves give off an unpleasant odor when bruised. In addition to eating the young shoots and leaves, native Americans and early American settlers made a crimson dye from the berry juice and continues with some today. The berry juice was used for ink.

Only the young shoots and developing leaves - before they take on their reddish hue - can be eaten, and only after boiling for 20-30 minutes in at least two changes of water. Be very careful not to get any of the root when picking the young shoots.

Native Americans from throughout its range used pokeweed concoctions for a wide variety of internal and external medicinal applications.   It seems the berry juice has been used for pimples and boils, in some cases taken internally in other cases applied to the skin. It has also been taken for joint pain and applied to sore breasts. Leaf concoctions have been used as an expectorant, emetic and cathartic. My mother would make a poke poultice for boils and it worked…

Sadly I cannot find the exact nutrient makeup of Poke Salat but is said to contain the same nutrients as other greens and cabbage families. In the spring, the tender young shoots are picked and boiled in two changes of water to help remove any toxic properties. Traditionally cooking; drained leaves are then seasoned with salt, pepper and bacon drippings and then fried in an iron skillet. Personally, any way you fix spinach will work with poke greens as long as you drain off the first water.

My mother served poke greens two ways. One; by boiling until tender then she would drain them and put into a skillet and add one egg and one small chopped onion per 2 cups of cooked greens and cook until eggs were set and onions tender crunchy. Second, simply boiled for about 15 minutes, drain off water, add more water and a few pieces of beef, sliced onions, salt and pepper to taste and boiled until the beef was fork tender. Both ways are tasty.

I now live in an area that I cannot find wild poke greens, but forced to buy canned ones, which just isn't the same nor as tasty… Fresh is best!
