QUESTION:
My doctor has found that I have a Vitamin D deficiency -
what causes this? What foods can I consume that will
help correct this deficiency? He also said my sugar was
elevated. Is this all related?
No Name
ANSWER:
Sorry to hear you are having a problem. Probably many
problems if you have a Vitamin D deficiency. This also
points to the likelihood of many nutrient deficiencies.
Did your doctor explain that Vitamin D is a fat-soluble
substance that dissolves in fat and can also be stored
by fat deposits in the body after exposure to the suns
rays. I must commend your doctor for even looking at a
nutritional deficiency, as most never look in that area
of health when looking to treat an illness.
I am assuming you are
an adult. A Vitamin D deficiency in a child can be
devastating to their whole growth and brain development.
In adults it causes so many illnesses with mental
illness and osteoporosis being the most often seen.
Are you using Sun Screen daily? The use of sun screen in
cosmetics, lotions, etc. is helping to create Vitamin D
deficiencies more than in the past and should be avoided
unless you will be spending hours in the sun. Gone are
the days of most people working outside and getting
their quota of Vitamin D. And now those that do work
outside are told that they will have skin cancer if they
don't use Sun Screen... Big business has convinced the
world that sun screen is necessary and has started
adding it to everything that goes on our body and that
is not good. Yes, too much sun on a regular basis is bad
so then a sun screen should be used.
Foods Vitamin D is present in are; salmon, mackerel,
sardines, and cod liver oil; a tiny bit in fortified
milk, breakfast cereals, and some juices, but due to
processing are not utilized as they should be. These
alone will most likely not change your deficiency to the
point of correcting the problem. Sadly the Vitamin D
added to dairy products is not utilized in the body as
they deplete the body of nutrients and add chemicals.
Sunlight is the only safe way to obtain a natural source
of Vitamin D in the body... Of course with the
prevalence of cancer these days I suspect a lot of it
has to do with sunlight deprivation. Current research
indicates vitamin D deficiency plays a role in causing
17 varieties of cancer as well as heart disease, stroke,
hypertension, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, depression,
chronic pain, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, muscle
weakness, muscle wasting, birth defects and periodontal
disease. So it is imperative that you reverse your
deficiency ASAP...
Did you notice diabetes mentioned in that list? Yes your
elevated blood sugar is most likely a result of the
deficiency. This can be corrected once the Vitamin D is
balanced out. I would suggest you try
Dr. Garland's herbal diabetic formula, 1 capsule 15
to 20 minutes before each meal, for at least a month
until such time you have your deficiency under
control...
If you are getting at
least 20 minutes of sunlight directly on your body daily
and you still suffer from this deficiency you will need
to play some nutrient balancing... If your body is not
mineral balanced you will not be able to absorb the
nutrients in your foods intake and the sunlight cannot
be utilized as it should, so it is best to make sure you
are taking a complete balanced mineral complex that
includes 84 minerals and trace minerals. See
The 1936 notes from Congress on the necessity for
that... I have yet to see a supplement in the stores
that has that total balance. This is a balancing act
that any person over the age of 10 years needs to work
at and
supplement daily...
You can always take a natural Vitamin D supplement but
there are HUGE dangers that lie with supplementing. You
will need to have frequent blood testing done to make
sure you are not getting too much. As with anything else
too much can be almost and sometimes just as devastating
as too little. That's why it is safer and much better to
simply make a habit of sunbathing with as few clothes on
as possible. This is best done at least four to six days
a week for a minimum of 15 minutes, 20 or 25 minutes
being much better, unless you do it daily then 10 to 15
will suffice... Do you sit under artificial lighting all
day as so many do or use your computer for many hours a
day? If so you will need to extend your sunlight
exposure a few minutes more to overcome that…
I hope this helps,
Lena

FINDING YOUR NOTE
A
short story by William Saroyan is titled "The
Man Whose Wife's Hair Was Too Long But Whose
Understanding of Music Was Too Short." If you
think the title strange, listen to this:
In the story, a husband plays the cello and
never changes notes. He just continues to repeat
the same note without variation.
His wife is driven to distraction and finally
protests: "Why do you play the same note over
and over and over again? Other cellists play
different notes."
"Other cellists play different notes," her
husband replies, "because they are trying to
find the right one. I've found mine."
I'm thankful I don't live with a person like
him.... But he does touch on a universal truth.
There is something beautiful about finding your
note in life. We sometimes call it finding your
purpose or discovering what you were meant to do
or be.
Philosopher James Allen advised, "Above all be
of single aim; have a legitimate and useful
purpose, and devote yourself unreservedly to
it." It's about cause and effect. A life without
cause is a life without effect. Or put another
way, a person not devoted to a cause will have
little effect on the world. It begins with
finding the right note.
I like the way Helen Keller said it: "Many
persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes
true happiness. It is not attained through
self-gratification, but through fidelity to a
worthy purpose."
Are you finding your note?

FOOD OF THE WEEK

The Ultimate Prickly
Ananas comosus Merr!
Two years have passed since my visit to one of the large areas known for
its great tasting Ananas comosus. Hawaii? So it's only natural
that I should think about that particular food this time each year and
my marvelous visit there. I also remember eating a lot of these and
enjoying every morsel! Christopher Columbus discovered this delectable
food growing on the island of Guadeloupe in 1493 and took them back to
Spain. It became very popular in Europe by the 1600s.
What is Ananas comosus Merr? Pineapple! The exceptional juiciness
and vibrant tropical flavor of pineapple that balances the tastes of
sweet and tart make them only second to bananas as America's favorite
tropical fruit. Although the Hawaiian season for pineapple runs from
March through June, they are available year-round in local markets.
Bromelain, the great health property contained in pineapples, has been
used for hundreds of years as a digestive aid, and to treat inflammation
and other health problems. Recently, bromelain has been investigated for
possible anticancer activity and now studies show it to contain protease
that is a great blood thinner cholesterol lowering agent, thereby
helping in preventing heart disease and stroke. Now all these will
require daily consumption of pineapple and a very large portion.
Pineapple was a culinary favorite of the fierce Carib Indians who lived
on islands in the sea that still bears their name.
High in fiber and very rich in minerals and vitamins: raw pineapple
contains Calcium, a mineral, is used for building bones and teeth
and in maintaining bone strength. Calcium is also used in muscle
contraction, blood clotting, and maintenance of cell membranes.
Iron, Necessary for production hemoglobin, and oxygenation of red
blood cells, builds up blood quality, and increases resistance as well
as increasing energy production.
Magnesium, Key substance in proper functioning of nerves and
muscles and healthy maintenance of bones. Helps protect the arterial
lining from the stress of sudden blood pressure changes.
Phosphorus, Essential for utilization of carbohydrate, fats and
proteins for growth, maintenance, repair of cells, and energy
production. Necessary for proper skeletal growth, tooth development,
kidney functioning and transference of nerve impulses.
Potassium, Essential for muscles, nerves and heart. Aids in
proper maintenance of mineral balance of blood, as well as stable blood
pressure. Works with sodium to regulate the body's water balance.
Sodium, The mineral is needed to maintain proper water balance
and blood pH. The mineral aids in the transmission of nerve impulses,
production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, muscle function and
immune system maintenance.
Zinc, important in prostate gland functions and the growth of
reproductive organs. The mineralization of bone, a healthy immune
system, the digestion of proteins, the acuity of taste and smell,
detoxification of free radical promoting metals, collagen formation and
wound healing, all depend on zinc. It assists in the transportation of
vitamin A in the blood. Sufficient intake and absorption of zinc are
needed to maintain the proper concentration of vitamin E in the blood.
Copper, its functions involve the development and maintenance of
the cardiovascular, skeletal and the nervous system, including the
brain. The development and maintenance of the red blood cells and
healthy skin and hair also depend upon copper. Found in all the tissues,
the mineral is most concentrated in the brain, heart, kidney, and liver.
Manganese, essential cofactor in a number of enzymes important in
energy production and antioxidant defenses.
Selenium, enhances the immune system, normal development of the
fetus during pregnancy, improving arthritic symptoms, and protecting the
skin from UV rays. A deficiency could result in birth defects, increased
risk of cancer, heart and liver diseases, Down's syndrome and
fibrocystic breast disease.
A host of vitamins;
Vitamin C Thiamin
Vitamin B1,
Riboflavin,
Niacin,
Pantothenic acid,
Vitamin B-6,
Folate,
Folic acid,
Vitamin B-12,
Vitamin A,
Retinol,
Vitamin A,
Vitamin E,
Tocopherol.
Along with Amino acids such as Tryptophan, Threonine, Isoleucine,
Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Cystine, Phenylalanine, Tyrosine, Valine,
Arginine,Histidine, Alanine, Aspartic acid, Glutamic acid, Glycine,
Proline and Serine.
Low in calories! Pineapple is best eaten alone between meals or its
enzymes will be used up digesting food and not benefiting your body as
well as it could.
Selecting, storing and using pineapple:
Look for pineapples that are heavy for their size. While larger
pineapples will have more edible flesh, there is usually no difference
in quality between a small and large size pineapple. Pineapples should
be free of soft spots, bruises and darkened "eyes", all of which may
indicate that the pineapple is past its prime. Choose fruit with a
fragrant sweet smell at the stem end. Avoid pineapple that smells musty,
sour or fermented.
Pineapple can be left at room temperature for one or two days before
serving. While this process will not make the fruit any sweeter, it will
help it to become softer and juicier. Since they are very perishable,
you should watch closely during storing period to ensure that they do
not spoil. After two days, if you are still not ready to consume the
pineapple, you should wrap it in a perforated plastic bag and store it
in the refrigerator where it will keep for a maximum of three to five
more days.
Pineapple that has been cut up should be stored in the refrigerator in
an airtight container. It will stay fresher and retain more taste and
juiciness if you also place some liquid, preferably juice from the
pineapple, in the container. Although pineapple can be frozen, this
process greatly affects its flavor.
Our favorite way of eating pineapple is fresh and raw, can't beat it for
great taste and enjoyment. My husband loves
pineapple pie, pineapple sundae's or fresh pineapple. Choose your way of
enjoying it!
Word of caution: If you are taking blood thinners eat pineapple
or drink pineapple juice but monitor your blood closely for too
much thinning as the bromelain has been known to cause thinning of the
blood without help and add that to a ingested blood thinner could be a
danger!
Enjoy!
