=> ASK LENA Q & A EDITION!
============================

Today's question is one that I don't enjoy having to answer... I don't like it when I can't promise the absolute ability to make someone totally healthy again!

Steve's Motivator this week, "BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE EAR-LIDS" is timely simply because of a discussion my husband and I had last week on listening. I won't tell you what that discussion entailed but this article was given to him to read and heed...  If you enjoy Steve's weekly Motivator let him know and tell him you read it in "A Natural Environmental Health Facts Ask Lena Health Q & A ezine." mailto:Publisher@LifeSupportSystem.com

I answer all health questions to the best of my ability using what I gleaned from 20-years as a Medical Office Nurse and Administrator along with my education in
nutritional and alternative modes. I am not a doctor and you should not think of me as one.

Q & A is for your information and education only and in some instances to give you a different perspective on a particular problem!

My wish for you, in the use of the information gained here, is that you will apply it in a smart and safe manner in order to enhance your life and not harm it! Not to be used in place of your judgment but in  addition to...

I have always felt that I had to know all sides to a problem and then make a decision for myself and I hope that will be your attitude as well!

IF YOU HAVE A HEALTH QUESTION

Be sure to give at least your first name, if it is a question you want answered in person feel free to give me a call at 928-636-9425

Thank you for your confidence and inquisitiveness!

QUESTION:

I have emphysema, and have had it for at least 18 years maybe longer. My pulmonary doctor said I'm not a good candidate for a lung transplant. I only have one good lung, the other one is partly collapsed from cancer treatment )radation) I'm 67 years young. At my age what do I have to lose, the way I see it I will either survive and be reasonably healthy or I will die, which if I live long enough I'm going to do anyway. What are your thoughts?

Sincerely,
John

ANSWER:

Hi John,

Sorry you've had such bad luck. Hey 67 is still young, or at least I like to believe that since that's where I'm at...

The lungs cannot be repaired as the liver can and the best we can hope to do is keep what you have working up to it's best ability without deterioration. I believe we can accomplish that over a few months time. For at least three months you will be on a lot of herbs and then you can start to taper back after that period... It will require some dietary changes along with supplements of herbs, minerals and vitamins, some from us and some not... Each one has an effect on giving your lungs the greatest chance at it's job...
Those things that have worked and are required with most respiratory problems are: Life Transfusion Ionic Liquid Minerals, Antioxidant Free-Radical formula, MegaNutrient vitamin formula, Shark Liver Oil Capsules, Circulatory Support and Our Respiratory/lung health Respiratory Formula along with a few other teas and such you would have to pick up at a health food store? Getting into a hyperbaric chamber also is doing great things for the lungs and respiratory diseases! Let us know if you want to go this route and the Dr. will personalize a protocol for you?

Hope this helps,
Lena

BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE EAR-LIDS

Patricia Goldman, as vice chairperson of the National Transportation
Safety Board, used to tell a story about how poorly airline passengers listen. She says that one flight attendant, who was frustrated by passenger inattentiveness during her what-to-do-in-an-emergency talk, changed the wording. This is what she actually said:

"When the mask drops down in front of you, place it over your naval
and continue to breathe normally."

Not a single passenger noticed.

We have eyelids, but we do not have ear-lids. To compensate, we learn to listen selectively - to turn our listening on and off. But if you
have ever been listened to, really listened to, you know how powerful that experience is. You can likewise listen more effectively to others by applying these four important listening principles:

*    Listen with your eyes. Make eye contact with the speaker.
Learn to concentrate on the moment at hand and clear your
      mind of distractions.
*    Listen with your ears. It is impossible to listen when you are
      speaking.
*    Listen with your mind. Let go of preconceived ideas about what
you think the speaker is saying. Keep your mind open, even if
you suspect you will dislike what you are about to hear.
*    Listen with your heart. Be concerned for and genuinely
interested in the person to whom you are listening. That will
speak louder than anything you actually say.

Listening with your eyes, your ears, your mind and your heart is not only effective, it will create an almost magical bond between you and others that can be achieved in no other way. Dr. Karl Menninger stated, "Listening is a magnetic and strange thing, a creative force. The friends who listen to us are the ones we move toward. When we are listened to, it creates us, makes us unfold and expand."

We all need a friend who really listens. And we can all be one.

FOOD OF THE WEEK

The Shoot You Can Eat And Lose Weight!

A fantastic food that has almost no calories if you leave off the butter!

As I picked the fat green shoots out of our patch I ate one, after washing it of course, and began to wonder what is so great about this vegetable. That's how a lot of my food columns come to be… Here is what I found on investigation!

Asparagus: A great source of vitamin E, asparagus (asparagi?) are also loaded with known phytochemicals to help fight cancer (glutathione, for example) and as a natural diuretic, will help get rid of that excess water weight.

The asparagus we eat are actually shoots from the earth-covered root of the asparagus plant. The shoots are cut after 3 to 7 days of growth.

Asparagus exceeds other vegetables as the leading supplier of Folic Acid. Providing folacin. Folacin is necessary for blood cell formation, growth, and prevention of liver disease. Clinical trials have demonstrated a significant link between Folic Acid intake and the prevention of neural tube defects that can cause paralysis and death in babies. - Low in Calories, less than 4 calories per average spear.

     - Very Low in Sodium
     - Vegetable Protein
     - A source of Fiber
     - Contains Vitamin A
     - Contains Potassium
     - Contains Vitamin E
     - A significant source of Vitamin B6
     - A significant source of Thiamine
     - One of the richest sources of Rutin, a strengthener of capillary walls
     - Contains Glutathione.

Glutathione (GSH) is one of the strongest Anti-Carcinogens and Antioxidants found in the body.  Glutathione has a function to protect cells from oxidative damage and detoxify carcinogenic electrophiles, consequently preventing damage to DNA. Therefore Glutathione functions as a primary defence against chemicals that can cause cell transformation or cell death. Asparagus was found to have the highest Glutathione content of  several foods that were tested.

CHOOSING ASPARAGUS: Select asparagus with tightly bunched tips (pass if the tips are loose), and minimum of woody white stalk at the bottom. Wrinkled or pithing stalks indicate age and dehydration and the taste may not be as good. When asparagus is fresh, there is no difference in taste or texture between thin and fat stalks (no matter what you've heard!).

Cooking Asparagus: Since most of asparagus nutrients are in the tip, its best to cook it upright in a tall container. Tie the asparagus in a bunch after cleaning, place in standing position in 1-2 inches of boiling water. Cook just until stalks soften.

If you don't have a pan tall enough, try this: make a very light butter sauce – I find that half butter and half virgin olive oil makes a healthy and tasty sauce - in a wide, flat pan. Cool. Add a touch of water and heat. Lay the washed wet asparagus in, cover and steam or simmer for 3 to 4 minutes. I have a steamer that I lay the cleaned asparagus in and steam, without butter or water, for about 5 minutes for crunchy goodness. Sprinkle with seasoned rice vinegar or lemon for a real treat!

Enjoy!
Lena
