Question:
I struggle with depression and have for years. Recently,
I was told I am bi-polar. This may explain why the
depression prescriptions never really worked for me. I
am 4 months pregnant and my doctor says I cannot start
the medicine for the bi-polar condition until my baby is
born. Is there any natural alternative, for bi-polar
disorder, that I can use during my pregnancy? I am still
taking Prozac, as the doctors are concerned about post-partem
depression, which I have history of.
Maya
Answer:
Congratulations on the upcoming new baby. Depression is
not a lot of fun and comes in all forms. The scientific
community agrees that the majority of depressions result
from a chemical imbalance - a way of saying a mineral
imbalance. Bi-polar being one of those. I can only tell
you what I've seen work and will not harm your baby but
then you will have to be the one to decide if you want
to try it.
First I have to say, I've seen some nasty latent side
effects in people who take Prozac, so I worry about you
taking it. Prozac has a way of changing a person's
personality into someone that family and friends do not
recognize, so why risk it when there is natural
alternatives?
Now for the natural alternatives for depression. I have
seen a couple of people with Bi-polar disease leave it
completely behind when adding some simple nutritional
supplements. One of them has been symptom free and
prescription free for nine years, another for four
years. Both found that contentment with adding three
supplements to their life and costing much less than
their anti-depression prescription. First 1 teaspoon of
a liquid
complete 84 ionic mineral, trace mineral complex
twice a day along with a fantastic herbal formula
compounded to nourish the brain, called "Mind
Power" Master Formula. 2 capsules in the morning
and 1 at noon. A third addition of
Tolerance Master Formula 1 capsule three times a
day.
The 9-year symptom free success took these same
supplements during her pregnancy and delivered a very
smart and happy child who is nine years old now with
above average intelligence and has been put up a grade
and looking to move him up one more grade, putting him
two years above those of his age group. If you are
interested in trying them you can call toll free 9am to
9pm Sun. Or order them online at
The Herbal
Pharmacy
There are other herbs that are known to bring relief as
well but I do not have personal experiences with any of
them other than the Valarian Root and Kava Kava, which
has worked as an antidepressant and relaxant for many
but falls short in many as well. Kava Kava in the
amount needed, alone, to correct should not be taken
during pregnancy. But the very most important aspect to
depression is to replace the minerals (chemicals) to
correct the problem and not mask it as prescriptions
tend to do.
Diet and exercise is very important as well. Dairy and
red meats tend to have an exacerbating effect on
depression also.
Wishing you delivery of a happy and healthy child.

LOVE LIFE
A man had
just taken his annual physical exam and was waiting for
the doctor's initial report. After a few minutes the
doctor came in with his charts in hand and said,
"There's no reason why you can't live a completely
normal life as long as you don't try to enjoy it."
One of the great keys to successful living is to ignore
the doctor's recommendation and enjoy life as much as
possible. Living is difficult. Learn to enjoy it. Decide
to be happy.
Dr. Norman Vincent Peale used to tell about a time when
Branch Rickey, former general manager of the Pittsburgh
Pirates and the Brooklyn Dodgers, was managing the St.
Louis Browns baseball team. The Browns happened to be
playing against the Detroit Tigers and the immortal Ty
Cobb came to bat with two outs and the bases empty in
the last inning of a tie game. Cobb drew a base on
balls. Once at first, Cobb took a risky lead. His
daring, his pure desire to make the most of the moment,
rattled the pitcher. The pick-off throw was wild and
Cobb dashed. He made a defiant turn at second, forcing
another wild throw, slid 10 feet into third and watched
as the dazed third baseman muffed the catch. Cobb sprang
to his feet and sped for home. By sheer adventure and
skill he made what amounted to a home run out of a base
on balls!
Unfortunately, the Browns lost as a result. But, Branch
was thrilled. He had the privilege of witnessing Ty
Cobb's irrepressible love of the game, that quality of
zest that set him apart from most other players. Branch
commented, "If a player really loves this game, it'll
love him back."
So it is with all of life. If we really love life, it
will love us back. If we learn to enjoy it, even when it
is difficult, we will live well. Henry Van Dyke said,
"Be glad of life because it gives you the chance to love
and to work and to play and to look at the stars."
Be glad. Enjoy! Love life...and it will love you back.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
=================
Apple Of The Orient aka
Ebenaceae, Diospyros kaki
In a few short weeks as we make our way to Southern California for my
grand daughter's graduation I look forward to being able to pick this
fruit from a tree? Not one I always ate or knew about but several years
ago we arrived home from the grocery store one afternoon to find these
squatty orange persimmons sitting at our back door. I put them in the
kitchen as they were really hard and persimmons are not one of my
favorite foods so I would not hurry to eat one. Later in the evening I
received a call from a dear friend asking me if I had found the fruit at
our back door. I assured him I did. He wanted to know if we had eaten
them and my reply was. "Are you nuts those persimmons are hard as a rock
and not ready to eat!" He started laughing and said, "Oh no go get one
and a knife and slice it as you would an apple and I'm not getting off
the phone until you do!" In order to clear my phone it looked like I
would have to do his bidding? When sliced into it appears I saw this
beautiful unique star fish pattern inside. So, I grudgingly did as he
said while. I bit into a slice and waited for disappointment. If you've
ever bitten into a native persimmon or an unripe Japanese variety, you
know that they can be puckery bitter when not fully ripe. My taste buds
received a huge shock as the taste was not at all the flavor of a
persimmon. A new favorite food had entered my life that day. I now wait
patiently every year until I can get some.

That favorite food is a Fuju Persimmon. And some things I have learned
about it is very interesting is that it's;
A short squatty orange fruit known as the Apple of the Orient (Ebenaceae,
Diospyros kaki). Fuju looks like a bright orange, medium-sized
squatty tomato, is perhaps best-known in America as the Japanese, or
Oriental, persimmon, occasionally Chinese plum or, when dried, Chinese
fig. In Spanish, it is called caqui. Native to Japan, Burma,
northern India and China, the tree can be found growing at altitudes
from 6000-8000 ft (1830-2500m) Marco Polo wrote about the persimmon
trade in the early 14th Century, and it is featured in
ceremonies throughout Asia, where over two thousand cultivars exist. It
was not until the late1800?s that grafted trees were distributed to
California, but by 1930, there were close to 100,000 bearing trees
around the state. The trees do well in the mild climate portions of
California, and over 90% of the total U.S. persimmon fruit crop is grown
there.
Eaten like an apple - has a crisp texture that makes it good for slicing
and using of fruit trays or in fruit salads. Persimmons are used in main
dishes to enhance the flavors in puddings, desserts, salsas, jams,
candy, breads, cakes, stewed fruits, and salads or they can be eaten
fresh, peeling and all. Dried persimmons, which have a chewy, jelly-like
texture and unique sweet flavor, are also available.
Rich in nutrients, particularly such important vitamins as A and C, a
little of the Bs, and E. Many minerals, such as calcium, magnesium,
copper, and manganese, a little iron, and other trace minerals, are also
present, when they are contained in the water and soil that nourishes
the plants or trees. Fuju's are low in fat and high in fiber making for
a great bowel stimulator.
I hope this info will you find a new favorite food!
