The answers to reader question come from Lena's 20+ years as a Medical Office Nurse along with ongoing education in nutritional and alternative treatment modes. Those same medical professionals aren't telling people how to get healthy or how to prevent illness, which led me to look for something to change that premise for myself and those around me. In looking outside the Westernized medical profession I found and continue to find alternatives that really work to create health and longevity -when adhered to - beyond anything the traditional medical world can do...

Does maybelline Great Lash mascara have mercury.  If so can you tell me names of other that don't have it?    Thanx in advance Betty

I will answer your second part of the question first.... The only mascara that I know for sure doesn't contain mercury is found at http://www.olhme.lbrionline.com. Since I use botanical skin care and cosmetics that are natural and have no chemicals I have not kept up with what is in other cosmetics for many years, yet I will tell you what I found out. 

I cannot find information saying yes or no as to whether Maybelline Great Lash contains mercury or not... But most makeup manufacturers have phased or are phasing out the use of mercury, so they say, but I would guess that isn't the case as you will see later in the ingredients list... According to John Bailey, chief scientist with the Personal Care Products Council in Washington; "Mercury is still added legally to some eye products as a preservative and germ-killer." That group doesn't really track mercury in beauty products so how could he know for sure. Federal law allows eye products to contain up to 65 parts per million of mercury, so I would suspect your least expensive mascara would have it, of which Maybelline is one. They would like you to think mercury is safe since John Bailey says; "The exposure a person would get from a product used in small quantities around the eyes would not cause a problem."

The state of Minnesota is the first in the U.S. to take a dramatic step to protect people who wear makeup.  Minnesota has banned mercury in cosmetics. This ban is even tougher than federal government standards. I suspect that other states will follow suite when the spotlight hits Minnesota. If it ever does?

The European Union requires that cosmetic products placed on the EU market be safe; that is, they "must not cause damage to human health when applied under normal or reasonably foreseeable conditions of use." I would assume that mercury is a known health problem. As in the U.S., manufacturers are responsible for ensuring that cosmetic products comply with the law before they are marketed. The manufacturer or importer of cosmetics is responsible for demonstrating that the product is safe for its intended use. Regulations are enforced at the national level, and each country in the EU has an authoritative body that is responsible for upholding compliance.

Here are the commonly found 12 mascara ingredients in Mascara:

* Alcohol Denat. -  To prevent Alcohol intended to be used for purposes other than oral ingestion, many countries, including the United States, require that denaturants be added to Alcohol. The denaturant makes the alcohol taste bad. When a denaturant is added to alcohol it is called denatured alcohol or Alcohol Denat.
* Ammonium Acrylates Copolymer - two or more monomers consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or one of their simple esters.
* Colorants - aka Color Additives same as in foods.
* Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax - Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, also called Carnauba Wax, is obtained from the leaves of the Brazilian tropical palm tree, Copernicia cerifera, and Rhus Succedanea Fruit Wax, also called Japan Wax, is obtained from the berries of the sumac Rhus succedanea, which grows in Japan and China.
 * Fragrance - any natural or synthetic substance or substances used solely to impart an odor.
* Glycerine - a component of all animal and vegetable fats and oils
* Isopropyl Myristate   - occurs naturally in animal or vegetable fats and oils. The other component of Myristyl Myristate comes from myristyl alcohol, while isopropyl alcohol provides the second component of Isopropyl Myristate.
*  Magnesium Silicate - Many silicates occur naturally and are mined; others are produced synthetically. The common aspect of all these clay-like ingredients is that they contain silicon, oxygen, and one or more metals (This is where mercury could possibly come in). All silicates, especially the clays, have a great ability to absorb water. (FDA) has approved Pyrophyllite as a color additive exempt from certification.
* Preservative Ingredients - Without preservatives cosmetic products, just like food, can become contaminated, leading to product spoilage and possibly irritation or infections.
* Propylene Glycol - aka PPG-9, PPG-12, PPG-15, PPG-17, PPG-20, PPG-26, PPG-30 and PPG-34. Propylene Glycol and Polypropylene Glycols attract water and function as moisturizers to enhance the appearance of skin by reducing flaking and restoring suppleness.
* TEA-Stearate   - TEA-Stearate is the triethanolamine (TEA) salt of stearic acid. It is a cream-colored, wax-like solid. a fatty acid obtained from animal and vegetable fats and oils.
* Water - Water used for this purpose is also referred to as distilled water

I realize this doesn't definitively answer your question but then I could not find mercury listed as an ingredient in any cosmetics, yet am told it is in several and will be listed under the name Magnesium Silicate but just that name alone will not tell you mercury only as it can be a host of other metals listed under that name...

Sorry I couldn't give you a definitive yes or no answer.

BE STILL

I have noticed that the best way for me to get a few minutes of solitude at the end of the day is to start washing the dishes! And a few minutes of solitude is something I need frequently. A time to be alone. A time to reflect.

I think there is a difference between aloneness and loneliness. Aloneness is necessary for the soul to thrive - even to come alive. Not loneliness.

German theologian and pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer was arrested and eventually hanged for opposing Hitler. While in prison, he wrote letters to his fiancé. The last letter she received was dated Christmas 1944. Speaking of the war that separated them, Bonhoeffer wrote this:

"These will be quiet days in our homes, but I have had the experience over and over again that the quieter it is around me, the clearer do I feel a connection to you. It is as though in solitude the soul develops senses which we hardly know in everyday life. Therefore I have not felt lonely or abandoned for one moment."

I can be alone without being lonely. In fact, those times of solitude are necessary respite for a beleaguered soul, set upon by the pressures of life. I need to take whatever moments I can to just be  still.

Only in quiet waters things mirror themselves undistorted," says Hans Margolius. "Only in a quiet mind is adequate perception of the world."

So I'll find time to ... be still.
