Evelyn Writes; "I am a 66 (Next Aug. birthday) year old woman that has dermatomyositis.  I am taking prednisone, methotrixate, plaquinel, synthroid and a fluid pill.  I started a rash in August, 2005 and my muscles enlarged around November, 2005.  After taking 60 ml of prednisone daily, my muscle went back to normal.  My skin rash has increased mostly over my shoulders and arms with a few patches on my face, knees and hips. Over the counter, I take a multi-vitamin, fish oil, stool softner, folic acid, vitamin E, Metamusil. "

Evelyn

ANSWER:

Not a fun thing to suffer from Evelyn? First I would like to say that if you are taking tablet form vitamins or supplements it's highly unlikely that your body is absorbing them. Even without this problem most pills are not utilized well. About 20% benefit is known for someone in your age range as normal IF they are absorbable, which most are not? That IF is very large because most tablets have additives that stop them from being absorbed properly so you are throwing away your money while not benefiting from them. That said;

I don't know exactly what you are looking for. Are you wanting to stop the chemical treatments and switch to alternative natural treatment or to learn what dermatomyositis is or? Here is an explanation of what it is, how the traditional medical world treats it and what you can do alternatively...

Dermatomyositis is one of a group of acquired muscle diseases called inflammatory myopathies (neuromuscular disorders in which the primary symptom is muscle weakness due to dysfunction of muscle fiber). The disease, which has a somewhat severe onset, affects both children and adults. Females are more often affected than males. Dermatomyositis is most often characterized by an accompanying rash or more often, precedes muscle weakness. The rash looks like patchy, bluish-purple discolorations that affects one or all of the following areas; face, neck, shoulders, upper chest, elbows, knees, knuckles, and back. Some people may also develop calcium deposits, which appear as hard bumps under the skin. The most common symptom is muscle weakness, usually affecting the muscles that are closest to the trunk of the body. Eventually, people have difficulty rising from a sitting position, climbing stairs, lifting objects, or reaching overhead. In some cases, muscles further away from the trunk of the body may be affected later in the course of the disease. Problems with swallowing (dysphagia) may occur. Occasionally, the muscles ache and are tender to the touch. Affected individuals may also feel fatigue and discomfort and experience weight loss or a low-grade fever.

Traditional treatment is; prescribing a steroid drug, such as prednisone, usually the first line of treatment. Immunosuppressants, such as azathioprine and methotrexate for those whom prednisone is ineffective. For some intravenous immunoglobulin is administered. Physical therapy is usually recommended to preserve muscle function and prevent muscle wasting.

One thing for sure... you cannot stop the prednisone all at once as the withdrawal symptoms can kill you....

I went to Dr. Garland for his expert opinion and recommendations on natural alternatives and his reply is below...

Good luck,
Lena

Dr. Garland's answer:

Lena this is a very difficult problem but not hopeless... It requires a multifaceted program and one that can be extremely successful when followed. It is a condition that requires treatment inside and out...

1.: SHARK LIVER OIL to normalize immune function, which is severely impaired.

2.: LIQUID MINERALS (1 teaspoon) in carrot juice three times a day for high Magnesium and balance to speed the body to work efficiently.

3.: ALPHA LIPOIC ACID for high antioxidant action, double dosage, which is listed on the bottle, if she gets them from you. (Lena can arrange for this)

4.: OREGANO OIL GELCAPS for immune boosting action, double dosage, again if she gets them from you as different brands have different amounts or oregano oil. (Lena can arrange for this)

5.: SISTER HILDEGARD SEA BUCKTHORN CREAM that works wonders on the skin eruptions. (Lena can arrange for this)

6.: DAILY PHYSICAL THERAPY to stop muscle wastage.

7.: IMMUNE BOOSTER DIET, which is elimination of all red meat, chicken, pork, milk, cheese, ice cream.

8.: MAKE SURE CHLORINATED/TREATED WATER is discontinued in both bathing, cooking or drinking! City water systems have chemicals that exacerbate this condition and stopping that can be of great benefit...

Lena you can arrange for all these except the Physical Therapy, which I hope her doctor has already arranged... If not at least she should start with walking as much as she can at a good speed, which will help with the muscle tone as well as the immune system balance...

Before she starts this natural protocol instruct her to call you so you can guide her in withdrawal of those chemical drugs safely so she can achieve the most benefit from the protocol. As you know taking both chemical and herbal/nutritional at the same time will slow the progress so she will need to work them together in as short a time as possible so she can start to heal as soon as possible...

This will require following by me on a weekly basis for at least the first few months as changes may be needed from time to time and she can do it as the others do by emailing or calling you.

Thank you for asking me to help and you being there for these people and giving them hope for a healthier life.
Dr. W. Garland

WHAT DO YOU NEED?

Do you know what you really need? I'm not talking about material things. I mean, what do you need to make your life all you want it to be?

Author Stephen Covey says that people all share four basic needs: the need to live, to love, to learn and to leave a legacy.

We need to live. Not just to breathe but to live life fully. Dr. Philip Humbert asks, "What remarkable, extraordinary and amazing things will you do with this wild and wonderful miracle, your one and only life?"

We need to love. We also need to be loved. As anthropologist Margaret Mead puts it, "One of the oldest human needs is having someone wonder where you are when you don't come home at night."

We need to learn. And not only for a few years when we are young. We must be life-long learners who never stop growing, never cease to improve. For when we no longer grow, we stagnate. And when we stagnate, we die.

Finally, we need to leave a legacy. It is a basic desire to want our lives to count for something. In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: "To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a little bit better, whether by

a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded."

These are four needs that must never be neglected. Live fully, love completely, learn constantly and leave something worthwhile behind. It is the path to success. And to joy.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
=================

Small And Powerful

These will be fresh out of our garden in the next few days so it's only fitting that they be this week's food of the week…

One of the earliest things ready to eat in our garden are these little red and small elongated whitish radishes with a bite. I don't remember them being so hot as a child from our garden. Is it the ground here makes things hotter or what? Some are sweet though so guess not?

Radishes have often been considered more as decoration and garnish than a food, except by those who grow them. Radishes are actually members of the cruciferous (cabbage, etc.) vegetable family and all parts are edible, including the greens. Because they vary in quality, radishes are usually classified as winter or summer plant. Small ones of bold red, pink, purple, white or red and white are usually considered summer radish by some. They may be globe-shaped or elongated, can be fiery hot or tastefully mild.

Most common varieties here in the U.S. are usually round, but can also be ovoid, cylindrical, or turnip-like in shape. They can be the familiar red or white, red and white mix, pink, purple, and black; but the flesh is almost always white. However, there are some stunning varieties that have produced such dramatically colored flesh as black and white stripes or red, green, purple, or fuchsia. Mustard oils are responsible for the tangy taste of radishes not the ground they grow in, or so I'm told.

The most popular, in my part of the world anyway, are red globe radish or Daikon, a general term for a group of long white radishes. So this information is mostly about those two radishes...

The Red Globe is low in calories and an abundance of flavor and crunch. Daikon radishes are similar in nutrients to the Red Globe.

A good source of Vitamin A, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Pantothenic Acid, Calcium, Iron and Copper, and a very good source of Vitamin C (ounce for ounce about 42% as much as an orange), Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Magnesium and Phosphorus.

Radishes are known to relieve indigestion and flatulence, as well as being a good expectorant. Like other cruciferous vegetables, radishes contain sulphurous compounds that have anti-cancer properties. They also contain salicyclates, compounds similar to aspirin and, therefore, should be avoided by those with aspirin sensitivities.

The pre-bagged radishes have a longer refrigerator life than those sold with their greens still attached as the greenery leeches nutrients from the bulb.

Daikon radishes are said to aid the digestive system, especially in the digestion of fatty foods. It is a common ingredient in Japanese cooking and is always grated and added to tempura dipping sauce. Young daikons can be eaten raw but the larger (more than 8 inches long) ones must be cooked. Always peel daikons. Cut up and simmered in stews and soups, daikon tastes light and refreshing rather than heavy or starchy. Daikons are often cut into paper-thin slices by talented Japanese chefs.

Daikon greens are delicious too. They can be washed, stacked, rolled as a scroll, and cut crosswise. This produces thin julienne strips which are traditionally salted and left standing for an hour. The moisture is squeezed out. The leaves are then chopped and stored in glass jars for up to a week in the refrigerator. The Japanese stir them into warm rice, they can also be added to soups and other recipes. Of course my sister-in-law has always cooked the greens of the little red ones as well and added garlic and a splash of lemon juice… very good!

Some other varieties of Radishes include:

Beauty Heart; is often sold as a red daikon, and has a striking fuchsia flesh, but can also be green or purple with crimson striping. It is grown mainly in China and treated more as a fruit like an Asian pear.
Blanche Transparent; (Transparent White) is a long, small, white radish and important only in the region where it is grown. It is similar to the winter radish in appearance and taste.
Cherry Belle; is round with crisp, white, mild flesh and can be harvested three weeks after planting.
China Rose; is bright red, with white flesh and a good flavor.
D'Avignon; is rose-colored with a white tip, crunchy, and extremely hot.
18 Day; is a fast-growing French breakfast type.
French Breakfast; is an elongated radish that sports red shoulders and a white tip. It is milder than the red globe, but just as crisp. If left too long, it becomes hot and woody.
Long Black Spanish; is dark skinned and extremely hot. Round Black Spanish is similar, but globe-shaped.
München Bier; is a tasty green which can be eaten raw or stir fried.
Palatinate Giant Radish; is one of the largest varieties, but no different in taste from its smaller relatives.
Scarlet Globe; is a popular mild variety.
Short Top Forcing; is bright red and excellent for winter sowing under cover.
California Mammoth White; is larger than the White Icicles, oblong in shape, with an average length of eight inches and a slightly pungent flavor.
Chinese Misato Rose; is a round Asian radish about four inches in diameter. Cream and green colored on the outside, it has a beautiful rosy-pink interior.
Easter Egg; comes in pastel shades.

Since our favorite way of eat them is raw and fresh I have no recipe so pop them into your mouth and enjoy the health benefits…

Enjoy
Lena
