QUESTION:

I've been a reader of your ezines for almost a year and haven't run across an answer to what I would like to know? Is there an alternative for hormone replacement therapy?  At what age can I quit taking HRT or would it be necessary to take it forever?

Jennifer T.

ANSWER:

Thanks for your question Jennifer and I haven't had that question for couple of years so you would have missed it.

Age isn't really the determining factor for starting or stopping HRT (hormone replacement therapy). With the nutrients missing from our foods, hormones in the meats and most commercially produced vegetables and fruits along with the junkfood age all people are missing the mark in nutritional sufficient foods and women are experiencing perimenopause in their early 30's versus 50's in the past...

Ongoing HRT depends on whether you have a uterus and ovaries or not as well as how much junk food (prepackaged and preprocessed and/or hormone/chemical containing meats) you consume and how often.

For women who have had a complete and total hysterectomy (removal of ovaries, tubes and uterus) a lifetime of HRT, in my opinion and experience, is smart for a lot of reasons. That severe a surgical menopause requires immediate HRT. The hormones are very necessary in keeping a woman healthy, both physically and mentally, although our traditional medical world will tell you differently…

We women have a myriad of hormone producing glands other than our ovaries, but after surgical removal and with traditional HRT those glands atrophy (dry up) from the use of HRT as the organs are sent a signal to not produce thereby preventing them from doing their job. Thus after several years of being shut down makes it almost impossible to create stimulation and get them to regenerate hormone production, thus making the HRT necessary. My opinion is that you should not use the Premarin (Pregnant Mares Urine) go for natural injectable hormones. Or if you can handle leathery skin, lots of body hair, insomnia and can live with the headaches and moods for years, take none. The one study that said HRT causes cancer, scared women and doctors who took that one study at their work and didn't check look at other studies, there have been many studies before and since that has found that to be a false premise.  So if you are one of the above who cannot stimulate your hormone producing glands with natural alternative herbs, minerals and vitamins and need manmade HRT do not panic.

But for women who have all their female anatomy there are herbal and mineral supplements to keep the glands working and balanced, and will not continue your periods, so HRT isn't an issue. I am lucky that I have a friend as well as assist Dr. Wayne Garland, uses an HRT supplement program that Chinese women have used for centuries, which is working for hundreds of women around the world. Both my daughters began his program when they started with perimenopausal symptoms – hot flashes, migraine headache, insomnia, dry skin and hair - in their 30's and is working well... Women who have taken birth control pills for years will take longer to get control and if she continues with BC will require different needs and should consult with Dr. Garland.

The alternative supplements consists of two herbal/mineral products; 1) Electronically-charged Liquid Minerals 3/4 to 1 tsp. twice a day mixed in a glass of juice to mask the taste... 2) Balanced Woman Herbal/vitamin/mineral Master Formula (1 to 3 capsules two or three times a day) as in everything else in our lives a little works for some and others need more so it will take experimenting to reach the amount best for you. Along with those two things a healthy diet that should consist of mostly fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables and little to no dairy, as dairy foods has the highest concentrate of hormones and chemicals of the whole food chain and in my opinion should not be consumed by any human being! When I worked pediatrics we had little girls as young as six years-old come in that were going into puberty already with developing breast and pubic hair, and an occasional little boy already going into puberty but for some reason or other it's more prevalent in girls. That may be due to the fact boys don't grow breast so it goes unnoticed more in them, I don't have the answer to that but once the doctor took them off meats and dairy they reverted back to normal little girls. Those were the child of women who were heavy meat and dairy eaters as well, which compounded the problem for their child. That tells me those two things are dangerous foods! Later in other offices I found doctors who did not or do not recognize that one simple fact of omitting those foods to reversing the problem… I advocate if you are going to eat meats make sure they are chemical-free and if you insist on dairy get it straight from the cow that isn't given hormones or chemical feeds.

These working together helps the body to continue hormonal balance, while also allowing a bypass of perimenopause, menopause or postmenopause symptoms such as headache, mood swings, crying easily, hot flashes, dry hair and skin, premature wrinkles as well as return of sex drives that have disappeared.  Another thing that may be required, since there are so many botched hysterectomies, is the addition of True Calm Relaxation formula, 1 capsule three times a day, may be needed for a few months until the body can bring the hormone glands left working into production and with some women this herbal formula will be required for a lifetime depending on how severe the damage is to the system. That area of the woman's internal organs is very delicate and can be damaged without the surgeon ever know it and only after affects will even hint at it. Latest finding of several studies found that more than 70% of women had those affects after a hysterectomy.

I know you didn't ask but I would be remiss if I didn't add this note; Even though I was a victim, at the age of 29, of the medical world's ignorance on women's health  I do not advocate surgical hysterectomy in 99.9% of cases today and if I could go back and knew what I know now I would not have given in to that procedure…

Hope this answers your questions,
Lena

DETOURS ARE TEMPORARY

In Death Valley, California, there is a place known as Dante's View. From there you can look down to the lowest spot in the United States, a depression in the earth 200 feet below sea level called Bad Water. But you can also look up to the highest peak in the contiguous United States, Mt. Whitney, which rises to a height of 14,500 feet.

Our lives also bring us to such places - where we can either journey into the depths of despair and depression or rise to incredible heights - depending on the direction we head. Yet, the mountaintop may not be where we want to reside, either. In a letter to a suicidal person, Al Hillman shared some exquisite wisdom:

"Sheila," he wrote, "I know all too well the battle you are engaged in. You see, I spent many years in the deep, dark valleys of mental illness. Most (people) want to be on the mountaintop. I don't. I have climbed mountains up to 17,000 feet. Not a pleasant place to be. Bitterly cold, roaring winds, nothing grows there. Just snow, ice and rocks. Very uncomfortable. Even the view is dismal, for all one can see is clouds.

"I have also been in the deep, dark valleys where the walls are so steep that nothing grows; there is complete darkness and one is all alone. A terrifying place to be.

"I enjoy being in the valley (with) the green pastures and (where) the streams are gentle and calm?."

Naturally, there are often valid medical reasons for mood shifts and depression. And it may require all of our resources to climb back out of our private "Bad Water": support from the medical community, friends and family, as well as our spiritual resources. We are not alone.

But I also like the counsel of Abraham Lincoln, who was similarly afflicted. In a letter to a friend, he once wrote: "You cannot now believe that you will ever feel better. But this is not true. You are sure to be happy again. Knowing this, truly believing it, will make you less miserable now."

It is true that few of us seem to stay in that peaceful valley for long. But, as someone aptly said, "The truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery while on detour." Detours, after all, are temporary.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
=================

Red, Yellow Or Green they are all great!

My mother would tell me the story of when I was 18 months old; I ate one-half can of lye, that she was using to make soap that ate the lining of my esophagus and left my upper passages looking like a web that spiders built, according to the doctor who read my esophagram a few years ago. Shortly after eating the lye and while my throat was still very raw she would find me sitting in the garden among the tomatoes eating ripe tomatoes and crying from the pain, but she could not convince me that I should not eat them. That must have been the beginning of "I can do it even if it kills me" attitude!

Tomatoes continue to be one of my favorite foods into this ripe old-age of 68! I now know that they are very good for me and you making it difficult to wait each year for my husband's garden to produce them!

Tomatoes generally range in size from three-quarters of an inch in diameter and a quarter of an ounce in weight to six inches in diameter and two pounds. Tomatoes range in hue from white to red to purple, green yellow and orange. Generally, the lighter colored tomatoes have a milder taste. The red colored tomatoes get their red pigment due to the lycopene content. More on lycopene later on...

Are tomatoes fruits or vegetables? If you're like most people, you think tomatoes are vegetables. If you talk to a botanist, he or she might insist that the tomato is a fruit because it contains seeds with sweet pulp. However, a horticulturist would argue that the tomato plant is a vegetable plant and not like fruits that are grown on trees (eg. apple, peach). Both arguments are valid, and in a way, the answer is that tomatoes are both a fruit and a vegetable.

Tomatoes are the second most consumed vegetable in North America. The tomato is a treasure of nutrients, including Vitamin C, Vitamin A, potassium, folic acid and more. Processed tomatoes have higher levels of the nutrients simply because it is concentrated. North Americans customarily eat a large volume of tomatoes and tomato products that it ranks as No.1 among fruits and vegetables in the total amount of nutrients they contribute to the diet.

Interestingly, second to oranges, tomatoes contribute a high amount of Vitamin C in North American diets. Vitamin C has long been known to prevent scurvy - a condition that is characterized by bleeding gums and soreness in the joints. Vitamin C is also known to function as an antioxidant in the human body. Studies have shown that it may prevent certain degenerative diseases and common colds.

In addition, tomato consumption is listed as the fourth most important source of vitamin A. In the body, vitamin A is converted from sources beta-carotene and it is important for immune functions, maintenance of the skin and tissue lining and vision.

Potassium is an essential nutrient that is important for normal health maintenance and growth. It is required for movement of nutrients across the cells in the body. A deficiency of potassium would lead to muscle weakness, apathy, cramps and more. It is important for athletes to maintain levels of potassium which is lost through sweating during an event. Potassium levels can be easily maintained before or after the event by eating foods or drinking fluids high in potassium.

Studies have shown that eating one small tomato and hour is killing cancer cells in lung cancer patients. Now how potent is that for a food?

History of the tomato

Tomatoes were first thought to be poison and were not to be eaten but that idea lost it's wind and then became the food of necessity.

The tomato originated in the Andes Mountains in South America and was first domesticated in Mexico by the Aztec people. After the Spanish conquered Mexico in the early 1500s, they introduced it to southern Europe, where it quickly became popular. The Italians named it "poma amoris" meaning "apple of love". Similarly, the French also called it "pomme d'amour". This name gave rise to the legend that the tomato was an aphrodisiac. However, in colder climates, such as Canada, Great Britain and parts of the United States, it was called the "wolf peach". This unappealing name reflected its poor reputation and people's beliefs that tomatoes were poisonous. Therefore, for many years, the tomato plant was only grown for decorative purposes.

The most talked about food nutrient known, at this time in the tomato, is Lycopene and being studied for further health benefits. In addition to giving tomatoes their vibrant color, lycopene appears to protect against diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

Lycopene is an antioxidant - it helps to counteract the harmful effects of substances called free radicals, which are thought to contribute to many chronic diseases and age-related processes in the body.

Organically grown tomatoes contain the 35% to 70% more nutrient content than the traditionally farm grown tomato.

The researchers surveyed the eating habits of over 47,000 men between the ages of 40-75 for six years and found that the consumption of tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato juice and pizza was associated with a reduced risk for developing prostate cancer. Researchers theorize that lycopene, an antioxidant nutrient found in large amounts in tomatoes, may be responsible for this possible protective effect.

Recipes for tomatoes are too varied to even try to give you one... Our favorite way of eating tomatoes in the summer is; plates of sliced fresh tomatoes with sliced cucumbers splashed with a bit of rice vinegar, salt and pepper and the family loves it. Most people love sliced sweet onions with this but my dh will be in the bathroom throwing up, moments after ingesting the tiniest piece of onion, so I leave them of for his sake... Our organic garden tomatoes are used to make ketchup, tomato sauce and canned fresh tomatoes for use through the winter. Try a small patch, as tomatoes are easily grown in your flower bed!

Tomato season is just beginning here but in most places has been in full swing for a few weeks. Remember organically grown tomatoes for maximum health and nutrient content.

Enjoy!
