Ann W. writes: "My feet feel like they are on fire by the end of the day and sometimes when I get up in the morning.  They turn tomato red, from time to time and burn as if I am walking on hot asphalt pavement. My doctor prescribed Neurontin and it seems to help but the side effects listed scare me and I would like to not take it if there is something else available. What is your suggestion for a natural treatment for this?"

Steve's Motivator this week, "
RUN WITH INTENT" has some truly great advice and something for all of us to think about!

If you enjoy Steve's weekly Motivator let him know and tell him you read it in "A Natural Environmental Health Facts Ask Lena Health Q & A ezine." mailto:Publisher@LifeSupportSystem.com

I answer all health questions to the best of my ability using what I gleaned from 20-years as a Medical Office Nurse and Administrator along with my education in nutritional and alternative modes. I am not a doctor and you should not think of me as one. Just lived many years while observing the life and health of many in the world around me...

Q & A is for your information and education only and in some instances to give you a different perspective on a particular problem!

My wish for you, in the use of the information gained here, is that you will apply it in a smart and safe manner in order to enhance your life and not harm it! Not to be used in place of your judgment but in  addition to... Even though I daily watch people become healthy with the information imparted nothing works 100% of the time for 100% of people...

I have always felt that I had to know all sides to a problem and then make a decision for myself and I hope that will be your attitude as well!

QUESTION:

My feet feel like they are on fire by the end of the day and sometimes when I get up in the morning.  They turn tomato red, from time to time and burn as if I am walking on hot asphalt pavement. My doctor prescribed Neurontin and it seems to help but the side effects listed scare me and I would like to not take it if there is something else available. What is your suggestion for a natural treatment for this?.

Ann W.

ANSWER:

This was partially covered by an Ask Lena Health Q & A in 2003 but I feel publishing your question will help those who were not readers in 2003, as this is a commonly asked question and has several causes.

You do not say if you have an underlying health problem? Nor did you give your age. This is a common occurrence in people over 50 years of age but without an absolutely diagnosed health problem this is usually called erythromyalgia.

Yes, doctors do prescribe Neurontin and it will help over short term but does not eliminate the problem as you have found? The burning feet may or may not get worse over time unless dealt with and not masked as Neurontin does.. This problem is prevalent in diabetes and prediabetics. I would hope your doctor has checked you for those and did not find a problem in that area.

Also people who have undergone chemotherapy tend to develop a neuropathy that creates burning feet.

This can also be a circulatory problem, which is a very common occurrence in those who have had bypass surgery as the medications cause a slowing of blood flow causing swelling and burning sensations.

Most people who have the problem lack sufficient exercise in their life and/or insufficient nutritional balance? Vitamin C (2,000 mg daily) and/or balanced 84 minerals and trace minerals supplementing has been known to provide relief in many?

But with my father, post-bypass, prostate cancer and diabetic, it was a matter of balancing his minerals and getting a slew of circulatory herbs into his system and getting his pancreas functioning more efficiently. I did that with Life Transfusion Liquid Minerals and Circulatory Support formula and DiaB herbal formula and Natural thyroid? One week later he was doing well and has not had a single episode in almost three years now?

If you drink alcohol? This can also create burning feet and you would be wise to stay away from it.

Another cause for burning feet, in women, is hormone fluctuations and if that should be your problem you will need to balance them. I recommend natural hormone therapy over the traditional form and we do that with Balanced Woman and Liquid Minerals to balance and control.

For preventing those nighttime hot feet try taking a mineral bath before going to bed, not only will your feet feel better but you will be able to sleep much better as well... Here is how I make my own mineral bath; 1/4 cup liquid minerals, 10 drops of Quiescence Blend for Relaxation and Sleep oil in a bathtub of warm (I personally like hot) water and soak for a minimum of 15 minutes.

What works for one will not always work for another but experimenting with treatments will usually find an answer...

I hope these thoughts will help you?
Lena

RUN WITH INTENT

Buckminster Fuller once said, "The minute you choose to do what you really want to do it's a different kind of life." And it's not about what you're getting PAID to do! If you want to live abundantly, decide what you really want and figure out a way to do it. Be clear and live with intent.

You may have heard of Fred Lebow. Fred complained to his doctor that he lacked energy. His doctor advised him to take up running in order to increase his stamina. He fell in love with it! He was 39 years old when he entered his first race -- and did horribly. He beat only one other contestant...a 72-year-old man. But he loved it!

Fred decided what he really wanted to do -- and he did it in his spare time. He joined the New York Road Runners Club and organized New York City's first marathon race. But what Fred truly wanted to do, even more than run, was to bring people together. And that is what he did. He believe that anybody should be able to run -- people of all ages, any background, professional or amateur, and of any country. Today, more than 28,000 people of all backgrounds and nationalities compete in the NYC Marathon.

Not everyone in New York was excited about people running through their neighborhoods. Fred was approached by a youth gang that warned him that nobody had better run through their turf. "That's great," Fred enthused. "I need someone to protect the runners in your area, and you look like just the fellows to do it." He gave them each a hat, shirt and jacket and that year, when the marathon went through their neighborhood, these young men proudly guarded the runners along their way.

Fred decided what was truly important to him and he found a way to do it. He lived with intent. That single decision made his life remarkably different.

In 1990, Fred Lebow found he had a brain tumor. In 1992 he ran his final race. He crossed the finish line holding the hand of his friend and Norwegian Olympic medalist, Grete Waitz. A bronze statue was created of Fred in his running clothes, checking his watch. It is now placed at the finish line of every race. Fred died in 1994. But as one sports writer said, "Fate handed him a short race. With his gall, with his love of life, Fred Lebow turned it into a marathon."

Fred would say that it's not about how long you live, but how you run the race of life. Do you run it with intent?

Funny Figgy Food Medicine

Just received a note from our dearest friends in Southern California that my husband's favorite fruit will be ready to pick any day now and he should get ready to visit again!

Now I'm not a great fan of figs but I will eat them occasionally.

Have you heard of a Fresh Fig Poultice? No! Its use is found in the Bible in Isaiah 38:21 Works, wonders for boils and skin infections.

Figs are one of the first known natural medicines. The Roman writer Pliny,  (52-113 AD) said, "Figs are restorative. They increase the strength of young people, preserve the elderly in better health and make them look younger with fewer wrinkles."

Figs contain the photochemical psoralenes, which helps bring about beneficial results in skin injuries, hence a fig poultice to draw and infection to a head. Also beneficial in the removal of dead skin tissues as for cosmetic use in facial scrubs, and in a skin disease involving lack of pigmentation in patches of skin (vitiligo). I bet it is the mineral properties contained in figs that does the trick!

Both fresh and dried figs are great medicinals! Dried, having about 5 times the amount of nutrients as fresh.

Figs have the highest overall mineral content of all common fruits. A 40 gram (1/4 cup) serving provides 244 mg of potassium (7% of the DV), 53 mg of calcium (6% of the DV) and 1.2 mg of iron (6% of the DV). On top of that contain the calming vitamins B1 and B2.

Great for intestinal balance and cleansing Figs have the highest dietary fiber of any common fruit, nut or vegetable. They are high in peptic fiber, which is a soft soluble fiber and helps the body remove toxic wastes and reduces cholesterol levels. They are good to prevent and relieve constipation. Chinese medicine recognizes figs as a toxin neutralizer. One of the most alkalizing foods, figs can help balance the acid that forms from diets rich in meat and refined foods. Figs contain significant amounts of the proteolytic enzyme Ficin which is a digestion enzyme helping with the digestion especially of proteins.

Word of caution; check that the figs you are buying are organic and of good quality. Fumigation is sometimes used to assure the absence of insects in figs and sulphur dioxide is used to maintain their sweet flavor and rich color. Dried figs infested by mites (rare but possible) may cause severe gastrointestinal conditions if eaten. Mold attack may cause figs to form mycotoxins, which can make you ill, so stick with fresh when you can.

Need ideas on how and/or when to eat figs?

1. Tuck a few figs into a plastic bag for the office,  school, game or park, makes for a quick healthful snack. Satisfies to a sweet tooth.

2. Keep a container of dried organic figs in a desk drawer at work, to satisfy late afternoon munchies, or to nibble at coffee break time.

3. Chop a few California figs to add to tossed green salads. They add delightful sweetness and texture, as well as fiber.

4. Sweeten up mashed or cubed winter squash or sweet potatoes with some chopped figs adding a richness of their own, so you can skip the butter or margarine.

5. Blend low-fat cream, ricotta or cottage cheese with some figs to create a great spread for toast or bagels, or as a dip for sliced fresh fruit.

6. Chop some California figs to scatter over instant or regular oatmeal or any cold cereal, skipping the sugar.

Grab a bag from your neighbor's tree and put them into your dehydrator for future use!

Enjoy your figgy food medicine!
