QUESTION:
I recently was told that if my lymphatic system was
working the way it should I would automatically lose
weight. I'm not at all sure that I was told the truth. I
believe you can help me know truth from fiction? I'm not
sure I understand what the lymphatic system is either?
Can you explain it so I and others like me can
understand? Was I given the true scoop?
Thanks,

ANSWER:
A similar question was asked a few years ago but I guess
it's time to answer it again? How to make this easy to
understand??? Last question first; Yes, you can lose
weight if the lymphatic system is functioning as it should.
Lymphatic system is not always easy to explain in simple
language... I hope I don't confuse more than clear it
up...
The lymphatic system works in two ways toward weight
gain or weight loss and is varied and large...
Consisting of the bone marrow, spleen, thymus gland,
lymph nodes, tonsils, appendix, and a few other flushing
system bodily organs working along with the digestive
tract. If one or more is off a bit it affects the rest?
The very reason that prescription medications create so
many more health problems. Most prescriptions are made
to slow or stop an organ or area of the body from
functioning as it should therefore effecting the rest of
the body!
The lymph is probably the easiest to start with as it is
the beginning of the whole system and empties into
progressively larger lymphatic vessels/organs, which
ultimately converge into - as creeks converge into a
river and the river into the ocean/lake - the Thoracic
Duct and drain their contents into the right and left
subclavian veins in the thorax. What it amounts to is
that the lymphatic system serves as a slow flowing, low
pressure drainage system that collects a small portion
of the interstitial fluid from throughout the body and
returns it to the bloodstream. The Thoracic Duct arises
anteriorly (near the head of to the second lumbar
vertebra - L2 in the spine) as an enlarged sac,
beginning as the cisterna chyli (the dilated sac at
the lower end of the
thoracic duct into which the intestinal trunk and
two lumbar lymphatic trunks flow.) This sac like the
lymphatic mass collects lymph fluid from lower limbs (legs
and feet) of the body as well as the digestive
system. Hence circulating the fluids of the body! When
improperly functioning (slowed down) results in
water weight gain that will inevitably result in fat
gain OR if working properly will result in weight loss
by washing out toxins and cleaning fat dissolving it
away...
The lymphatic system depends on muscular movement,
breathing, exercise and simple gravity to move lymph
fluid throughout the body. Sitting all day and not
getting exercise will stop the flow... However, the
Thoracic Duct (near the stomach) does contain
smooth muscle (the same muscle type that exists in
the lower digestive system and the arterial system)
in order to aid lymph flow. Thus, frequent movement (EXERCISE)
is critical for humans to properly move lymph and
prevent lymph fluid build-up (so-called water weight)
in the body.
All this makes it difficult to lose weight if all
lymphatic parts are not functioning properly, and on the
same note will make it easier to lose weight when
functioning well! The very reason exercise is so
important to a healthy body!
The crux keeping the lymphatic system working well is a
proper mineral and vitamin balance along with exercise.

ABC's Of Minerals to better understand how function
of the whole body is assisted and regulated by minerals and vitamins!
Hope I didn't confuse you more.

TAKE THE PLUNGE
"Watch me dive off the high board, Dad," my
ten-year-old son called out. I looked up to the
ten-foot-high diving board and waited as he stood at the
edge, stooped over, arms extended. He had jumped off the
high board many times before, but now his nerve seemed
to falter as he contemplated streaking through the air
headfirst.
The swimming pool was vacated, so he could take his
time. "You can do it, Robby," I encouraged. But he
couldn't. Not that evening. For 20 minutes he attempted
to muster the courage to make the plunge, and he finally
gave up when the pool closed for the night.
"I feel disappointed in myself," Robby said on the way
home. "I feel terrible. I know I can do it, though. I
know I can."
He persuaded me to take him swimming again the next
evening. Like the night before, we happened to be the
only swimmers. "I'm going to do it this time," he said
emphatically. "Watch me!"
He climbed the ladder and walked to the end of the board
as I watched. Again I encouraged him. Again he
hesitated. As the previous night, his nerve failed. It
seemed that he would never conquer his fear and leap.
The lifeguards on duty helped me cheer him on. "You can
do it, Robby," we all exhorted. "Just do it! Don't think
about it. Just do it!"
For 30 minutes we encouraged him. For 30 minutes he
started and stopped, he leaned and straightened and
fought the fear that held him back.
And then it happened. He extended his arms, bent over
the edge and fell headfirst into the water! He emerged
to the sounds of laughter and congratulations. He did
it! He finally did it! And before he went home, he did
it three more times.
Robby learned something about facing his fear that
evening. But he learned something else, too. He learned
that some things can't be done with less than full
commitment. A chasm cannot be leaped in two small jumps
and a dive cannot be made a little at a time. Sometimes
you just have to do it.
Some things require no less than full commitment. What
is requiring your full commitment? Will you take the
plunge?

FOOD OF THE WEEK
=================
Chewy Great Green Stalk!
This particular vegetable is looked on by a lot of
dieters as taboo simply because it is usually a stick that is eaten
while wishing they were eating something else... Little do they know it
is very healthy and once thought of only as medicine! Celery is related
to carrots, parsnips and parsley. Also related to anise, which has a
licorice-like flavor. Was once considered a medicinal herb rather than a
vegetable.
Celery probably originated in the Mediterranean area. It grows wild in
marshy places over a large area covering parts of Sweden south through
Europe, Algeria, Egypt, Asia Minor, the Caucasus and south-eastward
toward the Himalayas. It has also been found growing wild in Tierra del
Fuego (the southernmost tip of South America), California and New
Zealand.
According to Sturtevant, celery was known to the Greeks and Romans only
as a medicine. It was not used as a food, and whether or not it was
cultivated is unclear. Mentions of celery from ancient writings are: "selinon"
from Homer's Odyssey (850 BC), "selinon heleion" from Hippocrates, "eleisoselinon"
from Theophrastus and Dioscorides and "helioselinon" from Pliny and
Palladius. According to the Britannica Encyclopaedia, the Greeks and
Romans used celery as a flavoring. As late as the 16th century. Fuchsius
in 1542, Walafridus Strabo in the 9th century, Tragus in 1552, Pinaeus
in 1561, Pena and Lobel in 1570 and Ruellius Dioscorides in 1529 all
spoke of celery's medicinal properties. As late as 1722, celery was
still referred to as "a herb eaten to purify the blood."
The Chinese also used celery as a medicine. It is mentioned in Chinese
writings from the 5th century AD and in 1640 is described as a
cultivated plant. Cultivation of celery apparently began in the 16th
century in Italy and northern Europe, and in 1623 use of celery as a
food in France is recorded. For the next century, its culinary use was
limited to that of a flavoring. In 1726, celery seed was sold in England
for planting for use of the plant in soups and broths. By the middle of
the 17th century celery stalks and leaves were sometimes eaten with an
oil dressing in France and Italy.
The first celery's known cultivation was similar to the wild plant and
had hollow stalks. In the late 1700's and early 1800's, the cultivated
type was improved and the first celery with large, fleshy succulent
petioles appeared.
According to tests by Researchers at the University of Chicago, celery -
this week's food - reduces cholesterol levels by as much as 7 points
with as little as 2 stalks a day. Celery aids in the process of removing
and preventing cholesterol by increasing bile acid secretion. Celery
also contains butyl phthalide, another nutrient that is said to help
reduce high cholesterol.
Medical experts say that celery is good for people with circulation
problems because celery fights fat. Hence the reason for celery
sticks to munch on when dieting?
Celery contains nutrients that stimulate the elimination of fat
throughout the body says a physician at the University of Italy in
Milan. Celery is good for helping to clean the mouth and teeth during
eating of it raw.
Celery is high in calcium. High calcium intake invigorates the
endocrine system which releases hormones that break down fatty buildup
in cells.
Celery in cholesterol control; By aiding the body's processes in
dissolving already accumulated cholesterol on the interior walls of the
arteries, known as plaque, and helping the liver to metabolize and
prevent additional formation of cholesterol.
Celery root or Celeriac as it is known is another story to be covered at
a later time?
In our house celery's favorite presentation is either stuffed with cream
cheese or peanut butter. Kids love it... but my most favorite and one I
usually like for breakfast is the traditional Waldorf salad. My recipe
below?
Lena's Waldorf Salad
Ingredients:
2 cups chopped apples, (Granny smith or a Sweet tart apple or a
combination of different tart apples)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 cup celery, chopped
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup chopped walnuts
Sprinkle apples with lemon juice after they are chopped. I usually do
this in the food processor as the apples are chopped up...
Add all other
ingredients.
Toss until all pieces are coated with mayonnaise and serve. Taste is
better if let to set while before serving...
Enjoy this healthful food,
Lena
