The answers
to questions submitted to me each week come from my 20+ years as a Medical Office Nurse along
with many years and ongoing education in nutritional and alternative
treatment modes. Add that to
many years of friendship with Dr. Wayne Garland,
a very knowledgeable naturopath and herbologist, who
many years ago, beat his cancer death sentence given by

receiving a lot of study reports and try to ascertain

My years observing life and health of the many
people/patients around me and the contradictions of the
traditional medical world's idea of treating -
prescription domino effect - while watching those same
schooled methods that aren't relieving illness but
creating far more than they help. Those same medical
professionals aren't telling people how to get healthy
or how to prevent illness, which led me to look for
something to change that premise for myself and those
around me. In looking outside the Westernized medical
profession I found and continue to find alternatives
that really work to create health and longevity -when
adhered to - beyond anything the traditional medical
world can do...

QUESTION:
I'm concerned that my thinning hair is
due to the fact that I do not drink milk as I'm allergic
all my life and I take calcium supplements occasionally
but not real regular. I'm thinking that my thinning hair
and dry skin is due to the lack of calcium in my body? I
would like your opinion on that. If it's not lack of
calcium then what could cause hair falling out and
extreme dry skin?

ANSWER:
Without your age I am only guessing at
most of this answer. I'm assuming you are somewhere
between 25 and 50. Yes, that's a broad age range but
falling hair and dry skin are major tip offs that you
are most likely experiencing perimenopausal problems not
a simple lack of calcium problem.
Let me say that I have been allergic to dairy products
since birth and had four children in three years, which
really drains the calcium but still have strong bones at
the age of 71. I supplement daily to achieve that
success...
I suspect you are most
likely experiencing other symptoms that you do not
recognize or are ignoring as most people with those
problems do... The formal belief that calcium is the key
to great bones isn't all it's cracked up to be, but
that's a topic for another time... First off, it takes
many more minerals than just calcium to help the body
achieve balance and hair/bone/tendon health... Most
common cause for extreme hair fallout is from hormonal
shifts - reproductive system breakdown - That
creates insomnia, stress, bad diet choices, weight gain,
mood swings, soft bones, a thyroid slow down and a
calcium deficiency... So you are a little bit correct,
just not the full story... All of those symptoms are
perimenopause (lasts about 8 to 10 years in most women)
symptoms that occurs before menopause and is happening
earlier and earlier in women. Menopause also creates
those same symptoms... First thing to do would be a
balancing of minerals, which requires daily
supplementing to achieve since our foods no longer
contain them in the amounts necessary for our body's

Of course depending on how long you've been experiencing
these problems will determine if the balancing of
minerals can reverse it or if it has been happening for

time required for balance and correction can vary from

A diet rich in whole foods, such as lots of raw fruits
and vegetables only with whole grains contribute to your
whole body's ability to work better... Stay away
from prepackaged/processed foods as there are too many
chemicals and no nutrients that really negatively
impacts the reproductive hormonal and thyroid systems!!!
This regimen will correct most perimenopause and
menopause symptoms.

The drugs - Enbrel, Remicade, Humira and Cimzia - work
by suppressing the immune system to keep it from
attacking the body. For patients with rheumatoid
arthritis, the treatment provides relief from swollen
and painful joints, but it's "a double-edged sword,"
said the FDA's Dr. Jeffrey Siegel. That's because the
drugs also lower the body's defenses to various kinds of
infections.
Siegel, who heads the office that oversees arthritis
drugs, said the FDA became concerned after discovering
that doctors seemed to be overlooking a particular kind
of fungal infection called histoplasmosis. Of 240 cases
reported to the FDA in which patients taking one of the
four drugs developed this infection, a total of 45 died
- about 20 percent.
