Bobby writes: "I am a heart patient and on the blood thinner Coumadin. I think I remember you writing something about this a few years back but don't remember your answer so I'm asking again... My favorite food is the turnip. My family cooks the greens with the roots but I was told not to eat the green part because it has vitamin k in it. Does the root also have Vitamin k? I love both but would settle just for the root if it is ok. I would like you opinion..."

Again I want you to know that answering the questions posed to me does not just come off the top of my head but come from 20+ years as a Medical Office Nurse along with my ongoing education in nutritional and alternative treatment modes along with my many years of friendship with Dr. Wayne Garland, a very knowledgeable naturopath and herbologist, who many years ago, beat his cancer death sentence given by the traditional medical world, has helped me along this path and hopefully help to give hope to those who need it... I also receive a lot of study reports and try to ascertain if they are good or bad and report them to you, which has increased my knowledge and I pass them on to you to use or not...

I am not a doctor or dentist and you should not think of me as one!!
My years observing life and health of the many people/patients around me and the contradictions of the traditional medical world's idea of treating - prescription domino effect - while watching those same schooled methods that aren't relieving illness but creating far more than they help. Those same medical professionals aren't telling people how to get healthy or how to prevent illness, which led me to look for something to change that premise for myself and those around me. In looking outside the Westernized medical profession I found and continue to find alternatives that really work to create health and longevity -when adhered to - beyond anything the traditional medical world can do...

QUESTION:

Hi, I am a heart patient and on the blood thinner Coumadin. I would like you opinion...

Thanks
Bobby T.

ANSWER:

Thank you for your question Bobby,

I too love turnips and turnip greens, My southern heritage coming out...

For the readers who are not aware: Coumadin aka Warfarin Sodium is a Vitamin K blocker - Vit. K is a natural fibrinogen/clot producer necessary in the blood to keep a person from bleeding to death. Coumadin/Warfarin is preventing your body from producing its normal amounts of Vitamin K and vitamin K producing foods will affect your Coumadin level, making it possible for excessive bleeding, when consumed in large amounts. 1/2 to 3/4 cup of high vitamin K containing foods at a meal is normally acceptable. Unless you eat more than a 3/4 cup portion of Turnip greens with turnips I wouldn't worry about it. Some slight vitamin K level ups 'n downs should be normal whether eating Vitamin K foods or not but when the production is interrupted more unstable Vit. K levels are found to occur.

As with ALL manmade chemical medications Warfarin Sodium upsets your body's natural abilities to produce something, meaning it stops the natural flow of your body to be as healthy as it can be!

The medication also creates a condition in your body where excess life threatening bleeding hemorrhage is possible. This very medication was responsible for killing my mother and she was being monitored and watching what she ate but being blonde with thin arteries and veins it happened as it does daily across the world.  So you will understand why I hate that drug and shudder when anyone chooses to take it! Yes, you do have choices of that versus a natural clot/blood thinner, will give you that if you keep reading!

Now to answer your question?

Yes, some vitamin K is found in the turnip root itself but a larger amount is found in the turnip greens. I am assuming that you have regular blood tests to check the PT (prothombin bleeding time) of your Coumadin, if you are not having these done monthly or bi-monthly your doctor is lacking in quality medical care. But if he/she is monitoring your blood thinner monthly or bi-monthly and you have not had a problem in the past, after eating the turnips with the greens, I would not worry about eating them.

It is important to try and eat the same amount of Vitamin K containing foods daily for balanced blood thinning. Vitamin K is found in green leafy vegetables off all kinds and in some vegetable oils and some cereals, also small amounts can be found in meat and dairy foods (such as cheese). If you ate nothing but those foods at a meal or several meals in a row it could spell trouble but if you eat them with other non-vitamin K containing foods along with lots of fiber baring foods that will balance it out, not to worry.

If you want off that Coumadin merry-go-round, get to a chelationist and have chelation IV treatments and/or take natural blood thinning, arterial cleaning Nattokinase, 2 morning and evening. [For those taking 1 aspirin a day it can be replaced with 1 Nattokinase a day...] You would no longer have to worry about your kind of food intake, getting monthly blood tests or having a stroke or heart attack in the near future.  Nobody has bled to death from taking nattokinase either!

Insurance usually will not pay for those treatments but they do pay for doctor's visits and other ancillary testing, most of the time, just not chelation or natural medicines - providing your will see you after you choose alternative medicine. This I know to work personally as it cured my heart problems in 1992 and I have stayed healthy since with minerals, meganutrient vitamins and herbs. HMO's do not recognize chelation at all, which is amazing since it would save them billions of dollars? Of course the pharmaceutical industry can't get rich from chelation and natural medicine therefore they will tell you and do tell your doctor that it's quackery and he will turn around and tell you that same lie. I watched such seemingly miraculous recoveries of many heart and stroke patients treated with such miraculous success during my 22 chelation IV treatments... Many of those same people had done as I - checked out of a hospital AMA. Having had or currently having chelation and recovered to live happy healthy drug free quality lives... Even those who had had heart bypasses were able to get off their merry-go-round of life draining, mineral/vitamin depleting prescribed drugs.

Chelation IV therapy cleanses the body and the organs flushing it. I am still amazed at what happens with all kinds of other diseases and illnesses after having chelation IV therapy... That should be the first treatment for heart disease before rushing to the knife or balloon or stint and a lifetime of drugs, but isn't. That is not recognized by the insurance companies nor drug industry as viable treatment? most doctors are totally unaware there is a noninvasive treatment for a multitude of illness and diseases as it is not taught it in medical school? Or a person chooses less than quality of life and will ignore it because their insurance will not pay for it...

To learn about chelation and/or find a chelation professional near you go to http://www.healthy.net/clinic/therapy/chelat This is not a complete list but you may find one in your area! I am not affiliated with this group, just know they have great and accurate information.

For more information and testimonies of those who've been there read the books "Forty Something Forever" and "Bypassing The Bypass," for more information, found at your local book store or - less expensive - get them used at a really substantial reduced cost and fast delivery by clicking here and doing a search for those books by their title?

Enjoy your turnips and greens, just not in huge quantities.

LETTING YOURSELF GROW

Did you know that the gestation period for an elephant is 22 months? And then, she will give birth to a bundle of joy that weighs 150-250 pounds. If you're pregnant and sick of feeling like an elephant, you aren't one.

Growth takes time. That is true of humans as well as elephants. I attended a parent-teacher conference for my second-grade son. We sat in the children's chairs. They were about two feet tall and certainly not made for adults. Those chairs were designed for little people. Growth is a slow process, but as we grow up, we outgrow the little
chairs.

We grow physically and we grow in other ways, too. We grow in our roles and relationships. I occasionally asked my adolescent kids, "How do you think you're doing raising your parents?" I understood I would become a better parent as I grew into that role.

Sometimes growth in parenting involves the understanding that we don't know as much as we thought we did. Before my wife and I had children we taught parenting classes. We knew all of the fundamentals of raising happy and well-behaved children. Now, after raising my own children, I am sometimes asked about parenting issues.  This often occurs when I am teaching a class on a different topic. My response these days is to turn to the group and ask, "Does anyone here have any suggestions?"

As I've grown older, I have come to see more clearly just how much more I need to grow. I realize that simple answers do not fit every situation ...or every child. I am throwing out the easy answers and learning to assess every parenting issue individually. I try to learn from my failures, to trust my instincts and to respond more often from my best self.

I have come a long way, but have a long way yet to grow. And that is true of every area of my life.

If you're not yet the person you want to be, can you be patient as you grow? It takes the elephant 22 months to give birth. Even the mightiest tree begins as a frail seed.

Be patient. You can go through life or you can grow through life.
