James asks: "I am trying to lose some weight.  I currently weigh 200, I am 5'11".  I would like to get down to at least 190 lbs.  I have done, off and on, the Atkins diet, but not as successful as I would like, although I did lose some weight (from 210lbs), but I think that it is mostly muscle and water.  Any suggestions as to a better way to lose wight?  Calorie restriction is touted, what do you think? In my case I would have to restrict to about 200-400 cal. per day less than what I am eating now."

Hi.  I am male of 50 yrs of age.  I am trying to lose some weight.  I currently weigh 200, I am 5'11".  I would like to get down to at least 190 lbs.  I have done, off and on, the Atkins diet, but not as successful as I would like, although I did lose some weight (from 210lbs), but I think that it is mostly muscle and water.  Any suggestions as to a better way to lose wight?  Calorie restriction is touted, what do you think? ANSWER:

Congratulations on your efforts to lose weigh, which is the avenue to averting illness as well.... Obesity is running rampant and there seems to be only one basic reason and it isn't being addressed by the medical or weight loss world, yet has been a fact for 70 years.  More valid today than originally thought?
 
A theory around the earlier scientific community was that we cannot get sufficient nutrients from our food thereby setting us up for obesity while eating empty calorie foods, even when we think we are eating healthy we are not. Only those who eat organic are more likely to get more nutrients from their food but not sufficient even then... See and read here Notice that in 1936 they said we would be a nation of fat bellies and sure enough they were right...
 
So let us start by correcting the inability to get proper nutrients by supplementing them, which will make it easier to stop the weight gain while making it easier to lose weight.
 
The following is a suggestion that is working wonders for people who listen. This does not stop you from eating, all the regimen does is make you feel full sooner with number 2 and 4 while burning fat that exists with number 1, 2 & 3 helping you drop pounds while building muscle and repairing the pancreas.
 
1. Life Transfusion Liquid Minerals. Correcting the nutrient insufficiency and assuring nutrient absorption from the foods you eat... 30 drops in 4 - 6 ozs. of juice twice a day... in the morning and again afternoon no later than 4Pm .

*Salads (no iceberg lettuce, it doesn't have the same nutritional value of deep, green lettuce like green romaine, red leaf, etc.) Choose from a variety of Cucumbers, Bean Sprouts, Carrots, Celery, Broccoli, Cauliflower, mushroom, Snow Peas, Parsley, Alfalfa Sprouts are really good. - Look for greenhouse or vine ripened tomatoes.
*Shop organic where possible to avoid pesticides and other harmful chemicals.
*Use Barlean's Flax Seed Oil ( www.barleans.com ) from the health food store with lemon as salad dressing.
 
* Take your herbal weight loss capsules 15 to 20 minutes before each meal for best results but should you forget and take them with you meal a small benefit will be obtained anyway?
 
*Make your food simple, no fancy sauces.
 
- A piece of (organic, free range) grilled chicken, turkey or fish with salad and vegetables for instance.
 
*Spice up your meals with crushed garlic, shallots, onions and herbs. Use Sea Salt and avoid chemicals left in commercial table salt.
 
*Eliminate all milk from cows. No cheese. No ice cream. Switch to soy milk instead and soy butter and soy ice cream. The VitaSoy brand is the very best. A really tasty and simple butter spread is Virgin Olive Oil put into a dish and refrigerated, it becomes a soft spread.

*No white Rice, bread or crackers the first 30 days to get your blood sugar normalized.
 
*Eliminate all fried food --How did Colonel Sanders die?
 
*Avoid all pork, bacon, ham, sausages, deli meats and pepperoni, they are laced with nitrates and MSG, which accelerates weight gain.
 
*Ask questions of your food--become a toxin Sherlock Holmes.
 
*Avoid people who try to get you to eat foods that will harm you. They are not your friends. You are the example, not the victim -- make this an adventure in discovering yourself and how you tick.
 
*IMPORTANT PART OF PROGRAM Exercise for 30-45 minutes every single day -- Essential, if you have to break it up into 15 to 25 minute increments that will work also! People who eat right and exercise live far longer beside the benefit of not being overweight? people who eat right and exercise live far longer.
 
* No Aspartame sugar-free foods or drinks!

TRULY LISTENING

I believe it was Phyllis Diller who said, "We spend the first twelve months of our children's lives teaching them to walk and talk and the next twelve telling them to sit down and shut up."

When I recall my grandmother, I often remember the day she did NOT tell me to sit down or to shut up. Instead, she listened to me --  truly listened. And what a difference it made!

I was about eight years old and happened to be casually talking with her. I mentioned that it seemed to me that I could not breathe as well as before. It also seemed to me that many adults operated on an assumption that goes something like this: if there is no blood or smoke, then there's no problem. So I was surprised when she said, quite seriously, "Here, let me see."

I was even more surprised when she bent down and stuck her finger in my nose! That should not have caught me off guard, though, because my grandmother was blind. She "saw" with her hands.

"It doesn't feel right," she said. And a week later the doctor confirmed that I needed surgery and eventually my closed septum was reopened.

Over the years, I've noticed that other people remember their grandmothers fondly by recalling the aroma of home-baked cookies or remembering sitting in her lap while she read stories. I remember the day she stuck her finger in my nose. And I recall it with gratitude!

Bill Cosby has said so accurately, "If you listen carefully to what a child is saying to you, you'll see that he has a point to make. So I listen. And I answer them just as seriously as possible."

That sounds like a great way to treat children of all ages.
