Well the vitamin D deficiency shouldn’t be a surprise but it seems to be as only alternative healers have connected the dots!

In a perfect world, you'd never have to worry about getting enough vitamin D. Your body produces it on its own, when conditions are right. The trick is exposing some portion of your skin to direct sunlight for 15 to 40 minutes a few days a week, without sun screen on it.

Some people have a harder time! The darker a person's skin, the more difficult it is to get vitamin D from sunlight.

Fair-skinned people might be willing to risk the 10 to 15 minutes they need to get enough. But there's still a problem. Unless you live south of a line from Los Angeles to Columbia, S.C., there isn't enough of beneficial sunlight year round to produce all the vitamin D you need. Most people need other sources.

Today all the skin care lotions and cosmetics contain sun screen supposed to protect from Melanoma and other skin cancer. The sad truth is that more than 95% of melanoma cancer and about half of other skin cancer is in places sun never touches! But there are serious side effects from slathering on all those sun screens.

What tests have proven about the wonder vitamin is needed to prevent all kinds of illnesses.

Health issues happens when you are lacking Vitamin D!

Do you suffer from depression or anxiety? Sitting under fluorescent lights all day in the office and getting out after dark, making sunlight exposure totally impossible. Vitamin D insufficiency along with a host of mineral deficiencies and B vitamins, a major reason for depression. It has been shown beyond all doubt, in a multitude of studies, that the depression and lethargy associated with SAD (seasonal affective disorder) is nothing more than inadequate natural light and/or excess un-natural (fluorescent) light.

In 2008 Researchers from three prominent universities examined the records of more than 2,000 subjects and found that those with lower levels of Vitamin D showed suppressed levels of cognitive function and more depression!

A doctor at UC Davis says, "It can be said, as long as you do not obtain the benefits of natural light in the eyes, health will never be regained and maintained."

Do you know of children (or adults) with attention deficit disorder (ADD)? This condition is shown to be strongly correlated with unnatural light entering the eyes as well as a severe minerals and vitamin imbalances of which vitamin D is a known major vitamin missing in ADD patients. There are a lot of people who aren't seeing the sun for days at a time - whether working indoors sun-up to sun-down or sitting behind a desk in artificial light or an area of the world with very little sunlight exists - are at risk!

Do you have osteoporosis? Again vitamin D is a major need in those with osteoporosis. Necessary to regulate the hormonal and biochemical systems it controls as well as more than 400 cell regeneration - related to mineral metabolism in general and osteoblastic rebuilding activity - necessary to strong bones - in particular.

Do you suffer from chronic fatigue? Not only the lack of the body's minerals balance but adequate sunlight is an important part of increasing your vitality and avoiding chronic fatigue.

Receiving adequate sunlight vitamin is as important as exercise, taking any nutritional supplementation or eating a healthy diet.

In the late 1800s' and early 1900s' sunlight treatment was one of the prominent treatments used by the medical world to repair and build up health. The hospitals - called sanitariums in those days - found that by getting patients outside into sunlight daily, their health started to improve. Some of the sanitariums put in gardens to get the patients outside and prescriptions written "Work in the garden." Then working in the garden saw great improvement in their health.

Once chemical medications came into being that treatment left our planet of thinking and illness became more difficult to successfully treat and cure and doesn't enter the medical language these days! I believe if doctors ordered their patients to get out and get more sunlight they would find a healthier, happier, faster healing patient!

Sun could be the key to your lack of health! Get away from your computer and get outside for a while each day! 10 to 15 minutes a day – with as much skin as possible exposed and without sunscreen - will make a huge difference in your mental acuity and overall health. 30 minutes will be even better!

Wearing a hat and/or sun glasses can create the same issue! You see, when the light hits the eye’s optic nerve, it is carried to other parts of the brain in addition to the vision center. Particularly it is carried to the hypothalamus where Vitamin D is an essential nutrient to regulate hormone balance and autonomic nerve balance. This may be lost when wearing sun glasses or glasses that turn dark when in the sunlight, thus preventing necessary rays hitting the vision center.

Who's at Risk for "D" Deficiency?

Studies find vitamin D deficiency affects more than 200 million American adults, infants, children, and adolescents.

Your diet may increase your health risk if you eat prepackaged, processed, junk foods or drink a lot of sugary or alcohol drinks. Most people with low blood levels of vitamin D don't notice any symptoms until the health is gone.

Blood Pressure and Vitamin D

The combination of high blood pressure and vitamin D deficiency could be deadly. In one observational study, people with hypertension and a vitamin D deficiency were twice as likely to have a cardiac happening than other people in the study. One study stated that the lack of vitamin D was not linked to cardiovascular problems in those without hypertension. That study was paid for by a drug company and they would not want you to be healthy! But other independent studies have found any Vitamin D deficiency puts you at risk for a cardiovascular problem! We are watching people who are taking a minimum of 10,000 IU a day of Vitamin D controlling blood pressure among other health issues such as diabetes and other autoimmune diseases!

Vitamin D and Breast Cancer

Low levels of vitamin D may worsen the prognosis for women with breast cancer. In one study, women deficient in vitamin D when they were diagnosed had a 94% greater chance of the cancer spreading. They also had a 73% greater chance of dying over the next 10 years. Other studies suggest that vitamin D may even offer protection against developing breast cancer.

Vitamin D and Weight Gain

After menopause, most women gain weight until they reach their mid 60s. There is evidence, though, that taking a vitamin D and calcium supplement may slow that weight gain. In one study, women who were not getting enough of those two nutrients at the start were 11% less likely to gain weight and more likely to maintain their weight or even lose weight as a result of taking the supplement.

Vitamin D and Children

Evidence shows that a child who gets adequate vitamin D, either from the sun or from supplements, may have a reduced risk of developing type I diabetes. Studies also link inadequate vitamin D to more severe childhood asthma. People with asthma and other autoimmune illnesses who have low vitamin D levels have more hospitalizations and use more asthma medications.

A Difference in Vitamin D2 or D3?  Yes!

Vitamin D is available in supplements in two forms: D2 and D3. Both forms are effective, and either can be taken to ensure adequate levels of vitamin D. But D3 is the kind of vitamin D the body makes, and recent studies suggest that D3 can be up to three times more effective in raising the vitamin D level quickly and lasting longer.

How Much Vitamin D Do You Need?

Suggested levels for those without a known health issue;

Infant to 5 years - 35 IU's daily; this is necessary as mothers deficient in vitamin D during pregnancy passed on the deficiency to the baby. This can be countered by putting the baby, dressed in a diaper only, in direct sunlight for about 30 minutes daily.
5 years to 10 years -
2500 IU's daily - This can be obtained by dressing the child in shorts and a light crop top, no hat or sunglasses, outside into direct sunlight for 30 to 45 minutes without sun screen.
18 years to 30 years -
5000 IU's daily
Over 30 years -
7500 IU's daily

But in cases of any chronic health issue 10,000 up to 50,000 IU's is recommended.

Vitamin D with Other Drugs

Steroid medications can interfere with metabolism of vitamin D as well as many minerals and vitamins. If you take steroids, you should discuss vitamin D with your doctor, if he/she keeps up with health studies and issues. The same is true for the weight loss drug Orlistat, some cholesterol-lowering drugs, and seizure drugs such as phenobarbitol. Cholesterol-lowering statins, on the other hand, will raise vitamin D levels if you spend time out of doors in sunlight without sun screen, so take notice if that applies to you.

Testing for Vitamin D; There is a simple blood test — 25 hydroxyvitamin D test — your doctor can order to check your level of vitamin D. Most doctors don't order the test unless you ask for it.
