Evidence is mounting that cell phones can cause health problems such as cancer tumours.

Marketing strategies and PR campaigns are aimed at promoting the use of cell phones by children and teenagers, the fastest growing segment of the market. This is of concern to many radiation experts and public health officials around the world.

The British government has banned the use of cell phones in schools following a report by the Stewart Commision which found that when teens used their cell phones before going to class their short term memory was affected for up to one hour.

Studies in the UK., Germany, Denmark and other European countries have resulted in scientists issuing warnings to parents about children using cell phones. In June 2002 the Bangladesh government issued a ban on cellular use for children under the age of sixteen.

In August of 2000 a Maryland neurologist, Dr. Chris Neuman, filed an $800 million lawsuit alleging that years of cellular use caused cancerous tumors to grow behind his right ear. Peter Angelos, a high profile lawyer who had successfully litigated against tobacco and asbestos, took on this case stating he would not represent his client unless he had a 90% chance of winning.

In other legal developments Lloyds of London have refused to issue product liability coverage for manufacturers and retailers of cellular phones.

Dr George Carlo, highly respected in the health community, was employed by the cellular industry to study and determine the safety of cell phones. In 1999, Dr Carlo through research discovered that the rate of brain cancer mortality resulting from hand held cellular phones far exceeded those detached from their phones by up to three times as much. In October 1999 Dr Carlo published an article that claimed that cellular phone manufacturers failed to take the appropriate steps to protect consumers. Dr Carlo has since left the cell phone industry and has become one of the strongest advocates against the cellular industry and launched the Mobile Telephone Health Concerns Registry.

"Cellular telephones are the most radiative appliance we have ever invented apart from the microwave oven and people are putting them by their heads - arguably the most sensative part of the body," stated bioelectromagnetics scientist Roger Coghill.
