ASK LENA HEALTH Q & A
EDITION!
====================================
Today's question is a question something all men
should pay close attention to. Women find out what you
man needs to know so you can be informed as well.
The answers
to questions submitted to me each week come from my 20+ years as a Medical Office Nurse along
with many years and ongoing education in nutritional and alternative
treatment modes. Add that to
many years of friendship with Dr. Wayne Garland,
a very knowledgeable naturopath and herbologist, who
many years ago, beat his cancer death sentence given by
the traditional medical world, has helped along the
alternatives
path and
hopefully help to give hope to those who need it... Also
receiving a lot of study reports and try to ascertain
if they are good or bad then report them to you, which
has increased my knowledge along the way and I pass them on to you to
use or not...
I am not a doctor or dentist and you should not think of
me as one!!
My years observing life and health of the many
people/patients around me and the contradictions of the
traditional medical world's idea of treating -
prescription domino effect - while watching those same
schooled methods that aren't relieving illness but
creating far more health problems than they help. Those same medical
professionals aren't telling people how to get healthy
or how to prevent illness, which led me to look for
something to change that premise for myself and those
around me. In looking outside the Westernized medical
profession I found and continue to find alternatives
that really work to create health and longevity - when
adhered to - beyond anything the traditional medical
world can do...
Ask Lena Health Questions and Answers is for your
information and education only and in some instances to
give you a different perspective on a particular
problem! My wish for you, in the use of the information
gained here, is that you will apply it in a smart and
safe manner in order to enhance your life and not harm
it! Not to be used in place of your judgment but in
addition to... Even though I daily watch people become
healthy with the information imparted here nothing works
100% of the time for 100% of people...
I have always felt that I had to know all sides to a
problem and then make a decision for myself and I hope
that will be your attitude as well!

QUESTION:
I'm a 55 year-old male and I just had my
annual physical and my PSA was high. This year it was 9,
and the doctor wants me to have a biopsy. What is your
opinion? What is a PSA? Is a Positive PSA dangerous?
What are the normal levels? What does an abnormal
reading really mean?
Rod
ANSWER:
This isn't a new question but one I
have covered in the newsletter for a couple of years
therefore think it's time as a lot of men have
subscribed since then.
My Answer to Rod:
Lot of questions there Rod but thankfully simple to
answer. Understand I am not a man and I know that I
cannot think like a man, but I would hope that you are
not too bummed out over that reading as you will note it
is only slightly elevated. That can occur from several
areas of your life habits and/or could mean something or
not... I will give you reasons to think nothing!
When you say all else was normal I'm assuming you had no
enlarged prostate, viral infection, allergies acting up
or any other reason to be alarmed... Poor diet (fatty,
processed and/or junk foods) and/or lack of
sufficient water intake of which all can contribute to
those slightly elevated readings as well as a manual
exam up to 96 hours prior to running the blood test..
What is a PSA? PSA (prostate specific antigen)
is an enzyme produced by the prostate cells. Supposedly
- conventional/traditional medical world's idea - an
indicator of impending or existing prostate problem.
That is still yet to be seen!
Is a Positive PSA dangerous? Sadly a PSA isn't a
very accurate diagnostic tool! According to the NCI (National
Cancer Institute) in a statement issued in 2008,
more than 60% of PSA's reports elevated PSA's and are
nothing more than a false positive, creating unnecessary
tests, biopsy and permanent damage. If you regularly
read my "Natural Health Education & Home Business Facts"
ezine you would have read the report I published on
other studies released late last year; stated that
99% of prostate cancer will not kill a man, even when
nothing is done. Yet more damage is done with biopsies
and treatment than when doing nothing.
What are the normal levels? National Cancer
Institute (NCI) PSA range:
- Normal - 0 to 4 nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml)
- Slightly Elevated - 4 to 10 ng/ml
- Moderately Elevated - 10 to 20 ng/ml
- Highly Elevated - more than 20 ng/ml
What does an abnormal reading really mean?
According to NCI guidelines, PSA false positive results
occur mostly in men who are 50 or older. This is your
age group! In that age group, about 15 of every 100 men
tested will have PSA levels in the slightly elevated
range or higher. That conclusion was reached by several
studies done at various Medical colleges. So with that
number of inaccurate tests and I were a man I would
simply ignore a slightly elevated reading such as yours
but I would evaluate my habits and take steps to make
sure that it doesn't become a problem later...
That said, a single elevated PSA reading should not
prompt a biopsy without confirmation of cancer
possibility from other screening methods and since all
other findings seem normal I would simply wait and
repeat the PSA in six months... If it were me I would
never have a biopsy but you have to make that call
yourself. Ask your doctor to repeat the test in six
months. I realize that with the litigious society today
doctors are way overly cautious, anyway I'm betting
that's all yours is. Doctor's really should take into
consideration the dangers of unnecessary biopsy's,
especially in that area!
There have been reports
that PSA's done at specific times of the day will vary
greatly also. Also make sure you haven't had a
manual prostate check, intercourse or are stressed
when having the test done as all those things can give
you a false positive and in some instances a high false
positive result.
If I were a man I would not let the first PSA abnormal
test throw me into believing I have cancer, quite the
opposite since the chances are greater that it isn't...
In the meantime work at a healthy diet and make sure
your minerals are balanced, which many studies have
found to be lacking in men with prostate cancer. The
abnormal amount of minerals found in various studies on
prostate cancer is; zinc, calcium, potassium and
selenium along with Vitamin E. What has also been found
over the years is that an imbalance of those minerals
also means an imbalance of most all others and in most a
severe lack of other important minerals. I suggest a
daily
supplementing of balanced minerals to assure the
rest of your body is getting the necessary minerals for
total health. If you are lacking in a few minerals you
are probably lacking in many creating a need to balance
your all around minerals intake and make it less likely
to have a false positive and even prevent the likelihood
of a high PSA indicating cancer. You body's blood plasma
should be made up of a certain minerals balance and when
it is not balanced you end up ill, sooner or later...
Watch the fat intake in your diet as men eating high fat
diets are twice as likely to develop cancer in many
areas of the body, but specifically prostate. Add an
Omega3
supplement to your daily diet, sadly by eating fish
everyday or several times a week to get the Omega's you
can build up dangerous metal overload, which creates
stressed organs that result in failure, requiring daily
supplementing... Studies have shown a protective effect
of omega-3 fatty acids - found in fish - in inhibiting
the growth of cancer causing androgen-insensitive DU-145
human prostate adenocarcinoma cells, so I suggest a fish
oil supplement. Care should be taken to eat fish no more
than twice a week due to the risk of mercury and lead
build up. Flax seed is another great way of getting
Omega 3's...
I don't want you to think I'm here just to sell you
something but I happen to be very partial to Wayne
Garland, ND, TCM, PhD and his fabulous master formulas
developed after he was diagnosed with cancer and given
three months to live 25 years ago... In his quest to
live a few weeks longer he became cancer-free and along
the road founded these cancer healing formulas and is
now passing along what he discovered to anyone who is
interested? Once cancer-free he went to school to learn
about prevention and healing at the University of
Shanghai Institute of Health in China and a U.S.
Naturopathic college. Check out his healing/prevention

Thought for the Day
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
At
least nine vitamins and 84 minerals and trace minerals
are crucial to human nutrition, but if your diet
provides merely vitamins A, B, C, and G (riboflavin,
more modernly referred to as B2) chances are the other
vitamins will be found in adequate amounts in the same
food sources. Not so with minerals!
Are those vitamins in natural foods?
YES!
Are those minerals found in natural
foods? TRACE ONLY and no where near the full balance
needed!
Do these natural vitamins and small
amounts of minerals remain after prepackaged food
processing and manufacturing? NO!
Are these vitamins and minerals found in
diet sweeteners or fake fats? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

WE NEED EACH OTHER
Many living things need each other to
survive. I have lived for most of my life near trees
known as Colorado aspens. If you are familiar with this
tree, you may have noticed that it does not grow alone.
Aspens are found in clusters, or groves. We're told that
the reason for this is because aspens can multiply from
the roots. They send up lots of new shoots every year.
These become saplings that grow quickly and make new
baby aspens of their own. In some groves, all of the
trees may actually be connected by their roots. It is as
if they are one tree.
Another tree, the giant California redwood, may tower
300 feet into the sky. We've seen pictures of tunnels
carved into massive trunks wide enough to drive an
automobile through. It seems they would require the
deepest of roots to anchor them against strong winds.
But instead their roots are actually shallow -- they
spread out wide in search of surface water. And they
reach in all directions, intertwining with roots of
other redwoods. Locked together in this way, all the
trees support each other in wind and storms.
Aspens and redwoods never stand alone. They need one
another to survive.
People, too, are connected by a system of roots. We grow
up in families that nurture and guide us. We learn early
to make friends who support us in different ways. We are
not meant to survive long without others. And like the
giant redwoods, we do best when we hold onto one another
and help each other to keep standing through life's
storms. We need others to hold us up, encourage us and
to stand with us.
When I'm not doing well, it is often because I am going
it alone. I don't always let others in. I forget to ask
for help; I keep my problems to myself. And though I may
not see it, others around me might be doing the same
thing.
It helps to remember how much like those trees we really
are. It might be time to let someone else help hold you
up for awhile. Or perhaps someone needs to hang on to
you.
