 ASK LENA HEALTH Q & A EDITION!

With allergy season upon a large part of the world respiratory problems are going to be exacerbated and those with life-threatening COPD problems will be hit worse and some will lose their life because of those compromises. Today's question can help with either of those problems.

The answers to questions submitted to me each week come from my 20+ years as a Medical Office Nurse along with many years and ongoing education in nutritional and alternative treatment modes. Add that to many years of friendship with Dr. Wayne Garland, a very knowledgeable naturopath and herbologist, who many years ago, beat his cancer death sentence given by the traditional medical world, has helped along the alternatives path and hopefully help to give hope to those who need it... Also receiving a lot of study reports and try to ascertain if they are good or bad then report them to you, which has increased my knowledge along the way and I pass them on to you to use or not...

I am not a doctor or dentist and you should not think of me as one!!
My years observing life and health of the many people/patients around me and the contradictions of the traditional medical world's idea of treating - prescription domino effect - while watching those same schooled methods that aren't relieving illness but creating far more health problems than they help. Those same medical professionals aren't telling people how to get healthy or how to prevent illness, which led me to look for something to change that premise for myself and those around me. In looking outside the Westernized medical profession I found and continue to find alternatives that really work to create health and longevity - when adhered to - beyond anything the traditional medical world can do...

Ask Lena Health Questions and Answers is for your information and education only and in some instances to give you a different perspective on a particular problem! My wish for you, in the use of the information gained here, is that you will apply it in a smart and safe manner in order to enhance your life and not harm it! Not to be used in place of your judgment but in  addition to... Even though I daily watch people become healthy with the information imparted here nothing works 100% of the time for 100% of people...

I have always felt that I had to know all sides to a problem and then make a decision for myself and I hope that will be your attitude as well!

QUESTION:

I was diagnosed with COPD many years ago. It is now extremely difficult to breathe most of the time and am on oxygen almost 24 hours a day. My lung doctor said I'm not a good candidate for a lung transplant due to my age and deteriorating heart. I only have one good lung, the other one is barely functioning. I'm 65 so at my age what do I have to lose, the way I see it I will either survive and be reasonably healthy or I will die, which if I live long enough I'm going to do anyway. I live with oxygen to help me breathe. What are your thoughts on improving my breathing capabilities since I cannot get a lung transplant? I am not sure I would have one even if I could? Would you?

Sincerely,
James

ANSWER:

Hi James,

Sorry you've had such bad luck. Hey 65 is still young, or at least I like to believe it since I'm way beyond that... I'm hearing these same questions from people much younger than you these days. With all the pollution in the air and home it's a wonder anyone can breathe well!

For those who don't know COPD is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. This includes any chronic lung problems from asthma to lung failure!

You do not mention your medications, other than oxygen but knowing conventional medicine I'm sure you are on a host of drugs and steroid inhalers. Sadly, those meds. will not solve the problem and only treats certain symptoms and does your heart in - as it seems where you are - and soften your bones. So it will be a toss up of which gives out first your heart or your lungs or broken bones. You do not mention smoking or ever having smoked, but smoking is only one area which causes COPD. With all the air pollution, creams and lotions slathered on our bodies as well as the antibacterial soaps and cleaning and room freshening sprays, it's a wonder more of us aren't afflicted.

If you ever smoked I do hope you stopped it years ago! I'm sure you've learned you can't use room sprays as they impair your breathing significantly.

I do not say those things to scare you or anyone but it is a statement of fact. Our goal is to stop those life-altering, life-taking drugs and give a better quality of life, which many are doing successfully!

I must say that the lungs cannot be repaired as the liver and other organs can so I do not claim to be able to do that. Yes, some repair is possible but only slightly. The best we can hope to do is keep what you have working up to its best ability without deterioration. Yes, we are achieving better respiratory function and small repair but nothing huge.

I believe we can accomplish quality of breathing for you over a few months time, if you wish to follow Dr. Garland's proven protocol. For the first three to six months you will be on a lot of herbs and minerals then you may be able to start tapering back after that period to smaller doses, depending on how your lungs respond... It will also require some dietary changes along with supplements of herbs, minerals and vitamins, some from us and some not...

It is a known fact by both conventional medicine and alternatives medicine that dairy products build up mucous in the lungs making breathing harder while also draining the body of nutrients necessary to healthy lungs and body.  If something say "Pasteurized" STAY AWAY FROM IT.

The first step is a week long Cleansing Diet and total abstention from bread and pasta made with white flour,  dairy and red meats. Yes, I'm fully aware you guys are meat and potatoes people but with men dying younger than women, leaving the world overpopulated with women, shouldn't that tell you something about that way of life? Your choice will be to continue unhealthy habits and not breathe well or stop those unhealthy habits and breathe better!

Here is what I would do for better breathing if it were me and we do have people doing the these steps with great results and better breathing capacity... This is actually Dr. Wayne Garland's better breathing protocol!
1. 7-Day Cleansing Diet - A must to cleanse the cells and organs of the body to institute better breathing.
2. Life Transfusion Ionic Liquid Minerals the key to all the organs better health Read Minerals and their Uses to understand why.
3. Antioxidant Free-Radical formula, This is an absolute necessity to stop free-radical damage that will keep the cellular system strong and healthy. Without healthy cells the lungs cannot work efficiently.
4. MegaNutrient vitamin formula, The gives your body the absolute vitamin power to retain elasticity and healthy lungs.
5. Shark Liver Oil Capsules, This supplement is a known lung improver and strengthener.
6. Circulatory Support and Respiratory/lung health Formula these two formulas will retain elasticity and strength in your lungs as well as restore your heart to it's maximum capacity, which is so key to the filtering of the blood through the lungs and heart.
7. If at all possible:  a hyperbaric chamber, if available. Treatments with the chamber is opening up the circulatory system in ways only dreamed of in the past but now being used to open arteries and veins helping the whole body but doing great things for the lungs and respiratory diseases?

These are steps we have many of Dr. Garland's respiratory patients are doing and breathing better for it. I'm sure you could be added to that group if you choose these alternatives.

As to your question of me having a lung transplant if I could. No Way! After watching the life of transplant patients over the years and the drugs necessary after transplants, wipe out people I would not have it done nor would I allow a member of my family if I had a say in it. I'm all for quality of life if it's a choice of quality or longevity and being sick. I choose quality! To me that is worse than death. I am fully aware most will not agree with me and that's okay. You must choose your life and I choose mine! So don't send me nasty emails please!

If your child has asthma, don't be afraid to let them play wind instruments if they want. That's the advice of the Journal of Asthma. When researchers studied a group of asthmatic teens who played wind instruments and compared them with a group who played other instruments, they found that playing the brasses or reeds offered real lung improving benefit.

The wind players had fewer asthmatic episodes and felt more confident about their ability to deal with the condition.  In fact, the journal concludes that playing a wind instrument may be good long-term therapy for asthma.

TIME TO BE QUIET

Popular author and speaker Ken Blanchard sometimes tells a powerful story about Red, a corporate president who, as a young man, learned an important and life-changing lesson. Red had just graduated from college and was offered an opportunity to interview for a position with a firm in New York City. As the job involved moving his wife and small child from Texas to New York, he wanted to talk the decision over with someone before accepting it, but his father had died and Red did not feel he had anybody to turn to. On impulse, he telephoned an old friend of the family; someone his father had suggested he turn to if he ever needed good advice.

The friend said he would be happy to give Red advice about the job offer under the condition that the young man takes whatever advice he was given. "You might want to think about that for a couple of days before hearing my suggestion," he was told.

Two days later Red called the man back and said he was ready to listen to his counsel. "Go on to New York City and have the interview," the older man said. "But I want you to go up there in a very special way. I want you to go on a train and I want you to get a private compartment. Don't take anything to write with, anything to listen to or anything to read, and don't talk to anybody except to put in your order for dinner with the porter. When you get to New York call me and I will tell you what to do next."

Red followed the advice precisely. The trip took two days. As he had brought along nothing to do and kept entirely to himself, he quickly became bored. It soon dawned on him what was happening. He was being forced into quiet time. He could do nothing but think and meditate. About three hours outside New York City he broke the rules and asked for a pencil and paper. Until the train stopped, he wrote -- the culmination of all his meditation.

Red called the family friend from the train station. "I know what you wanted," he said. "You wanted me to think. And now I know what to do. I don't need anymore help."

"I didn't think you would, Red," came the reply. "Good luck."

Sorry, I don't know if he took the job or not. But Blanchard reports that, years later, Red headed a corporation in California. And he always made it a policy to take a couple of days to be alone. He went where there was no phone, no television, no distractions and no people. He went to be alone; to meditate and to listen.

The French writer and Nobel Prize winner And
ŕ Gide reminds us to "be faithful to that which exists within yourself." But how can we be faithful when we don't really know what is inside?

The answer for me is to be quiet. To still my mind...and to listen. I'll soon know what to do.
