 ASK LENA HEALTH Q & A EDITION!

===========================
=========

As I prepare for my trip later in the week it means I have to work harder than ever at research and answering questions without shortchanging you. Today holds another line of questioning that has some people wondering about good fats versus bad fats and Sam deserves a fair answer to the best of my ability. Also you will find that Q & A is back to the normal Q & A format. Be sure to read "Today's Thought" as it pertains to the dangers in certain blood pressure lowering medications! Enjoy and learn!

The answers to questions submitted to me each week come from my 20+ years as a Medical Office Nurse along with many years and ongoing education in nutritional and alternative treatment modes. Add that to many years of friendship with Dr. Wayne Garland, a very knowledgeable naturopath and herbologist, who many years ago, beat his cancer death sentence given by the traditional medical world, has helped along the alternatives path and hopefully help to give hope to those who need it... Also receiving a lot of study reports and try to ascertain if they are good or bad then report them to you, which has increased my knowledge along the way and I pass them on to you to use or not...

I am not a doctor or dentist and you should not think of me as one!!
My years observing life and health of the many people/patients around me and the contradictions of the traditional medical world's idea of treating - prescription domino effect - while watching those same schooled methods that aren't relieving illness but creating far more health problems than they help. Those same medical professionals aren't telling people how to get healthy or how to prevent illness, which led me to look for something to change that premise for myself and those around me. In looking outside the Westernized medical profession I found and continue to find alternatives that really work to create health and longevity - when adhered to - beyond anything the traditional medical world can do...

Ask Lena Health Questions and Answers is for your information and education only and in some instances to give you a different perspective on a particular problem! My wish for you, in the use of the information gained here, is that you will apply it in a smart and safe manner in order to enhance your life and not harm it! Not to be used in place of your judgment but in  addition to... Even though I daily watch people become healthy with the information imparted here nothing works 100% of the time for 100% of people...

I have always felt that I had to know all sides to a problem and then make a decision for myself and I hope that will be your attitude as well!

QUESTION:

I find that your answers make more sense than others who have tried to get me to understand the why of things so I am asking you to help me understand, why are we not supposed to have saturated fats in our diet? What are the differences in fats?

Thanks in advance.
Sam

ANSWER:

Good questions Sam and there is a lot of controversy over this.  Mostly misunderstanding I think creates the controversy. This is something that has been floating around the last few years and for a while got a lot of news coverage, but has died off lately. Answering your second question first; There is good fat and bad fat and also saturated fats come in different types.

Meat and potato consumers say saturated fat isn't dangerous. Then vegans are convinced that saturated fats are bad. Somewhere in the middle is the real answer but I am not the final decision on this debate but I will tell you what I know about it. I personally stay away from saturated animal fats, but I am not fanatical about it, just careful and discerning. I do believe that meat should NOT be eaten on a daily basis more because of the amounts of hormones and antibiotics in commercially grown animals than the fat and the damage done to our body and cells from those hormones and antibiotics. But when you put the two - fats and chemicals/hormones together that is a lot of danger therefore I suggest eating only range fed drug free meats. Hormone and antibiotic-free meat should be all that is consumed by the body... I pay a lot of money a few times a year to give my family their traditional holiday turkey or corned beef and cabbage but they are worth it...

Back to your question; Why are we not suppose to have saturated fats? First off saturated fats - animal fats - are not necessary in the diet. Mankind ate none in the ancient of ages past before the flood and they lived to be 800 to 900 years old so that says something to me about the carnivore diet adopted after the followed - a necessity - and the culprit to shortening our lives looks very mucyh like it could be due to saturated fat? My opinion and I'm sticking to it!

BUT Fats are necessary to the body but high in calories - whatever kind consumed - so expect to gain weight if you consume a lot! The body does require some fat... There are healthy fats that you can eat that will not damage your body. As the most concentrated source of calories (nine calories per gram of fat compared with four calories per gram for protein and carbohydrates), it helps supply energy. Fat has a very important function in our body. The right fat provides linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid for growth, healthy skin and metabolism. As well as being a concentrated source of energy, fats act as carriers for fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Fats are also essential for the structure of cell membranes and are precursors of many hormones.

Coconut oil and palm oil are vegetable sources of saturated fats and has been found to be a healthy source of fat. Olive oil is a monounsaturated fat. Polyunsaturated fats are usually from plant sources. Now to help you understand those terms!

What is mono-unsaturated fat?

Monounsaturated fat probably the healthiest type of fat and healthy when consumed in moderation. It has none of the adverse effects associated with saturated fats, trans-fats or polyunsaturated vegetable oils.

What is polyunsaturated fat?

Polyunsaturated fat is healthier than saturated fats. It is also an essential element in our diet because polyunsaturated fat includes a special family of essential fatty acids (which the human body cannot manufacture for itself) called omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids.

Polyunsaturated fat is found in vegetable oils like safflower, corn, sunflower, olive, nut and soybeans. Polyunsaturated fats remain liquid at room temperature.

There is a really dangerous fat that will cause health problems!

That dangerous fat is trans-fat, which should not be in your diet, but consumed by many and in fact can create problems when consumed... Found mostly in prepackaged and processed and fast foods.

Trans-fats are bad news for arteries! Trans-Fats aka Hydrogenated Fats

Trans-fats are mainly contained in solid or semi-solid margarines, as well as commercial cooking oils that are used to produce many processed foods.

In manufacturing liquid oils go through a process called hydrogenation, whereby each molecule of oil has several hydrogen atoms added to it. This makes the oil solid and less likely to become rancid but will clog your body!

So why bother to hydrogenate oils?

Because hydrogenation allows manufacturers to turn cheap, low quality oils into feasible butter and cooking oil substitutes. Hence doing nothing good for you but does increase free-radicals - the culprits of disease!

Homogenized milks have trans fat created from the homogenization, so not a good thing to ingest! Stay away from margarines or solid cooking blends/shortenings and be healthier.

Wow, I hope I didn?t confuse you too much but the difference in fats exist and confuse a lot of people.

Wishing you an illness-free life that can be obtained by consuming good fats whether it be saturated or unsaturated!

Another reason to consider natural blood pressure alternatives!

Abdominal aneurysms appear most often in patients who take angiotensin II (ACE inhibitor), a hormone for controlling blood pressure and brings about the vessel damage. Angiotensin II unlocks cyclophilin A, which causes a lot of the damage, according to Dr. Bradford Berk, who lead a study in Abdominal aneurysms. Also said that Cyclophilin A encourages the production of harmful compounds known as reactive oxygen species, which trigger cells to self-destruct. It also increases inflammation and degrades structural components in the vessel wall, weakening blood vessels. If a medication ends or begins with "thiazide" or any of the following; Benazepril (Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), fosinopril (Monopril), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), moexipril (Univasc), perindopril(Aceon), quinapril (Accupril), ramipril (Altace), and trandolapril (Mavik) are also ACE inhibitors angeotensin drugs then it's an angiotensin drug!

LENA'S COMMENT: As numerous studies have been done and found that inflammation in the body is the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes, not cholesterol! Unnatural levels of cholesterol has been noted after taking the above blood pressure drugs that then leads to cholesterol drugs. The very reason so many on blood pressure medications are also on cholesterol lowering drugs! For one example of an alternative high blood pressure alternatives Click Here

COOL HEADS AND WARM HEARTS

If you've ever struggled making the right decision, you may appreciate this story:

A young man seemed to take an unusually long time to place his order at the flower shop. When the clerk asked how she could help, he explained that his girlfriend was turning 19 and he couldn't decide whether to give her a dozen roses or 19 roses -- one for each year of her life.

The woman put aside her business judgment and advised, "She may be your 19-year-old girlfriend now, but someday she could be your 50-year-old wife."

The young man bought a dozen roses. He made his decision from both his head and his heart.

Abraham Lincoln has been considered one of the greatest leaders of all time. He maintained a cool head, even under personal attack. Though constantly criticized in public, he rarely answered back. "If I were to try to read, much less answer, all the attacks made on me, this shop might as well be closed for any other business," he said. He showed courage in the face of unjust criticism. He refused to retaliate and chose instead to quietly do the very best he could.

And Lincoln was also widely known for his compassion. He made difficult and tough decisions during America's Civil War, but at the same time showed great leniency. He pardoned more prisoners than any U. S. president before or since. And when a general asked Lincoln how the defeated Confederates should be treated, Lincoln replied, "Let 'em up easy." He was both cool-headed and warm-hearted.

Too many people get it the other way around. They have hot heads and cold hearts. They react in the heat of anger or passion. They are cold and unfeeling. And they invariably make poor decisions.

A cool head asks the hard questions. A cool head thinks it through. A cool head fairly weighs the options and asks, "What is the logical thing to do?"

A warm heart empathizes. A warm heart considers feelings and relationships. A warm heart asks, "What is my spirit telling me to do?"

Some decisions we make with our heads. Others with our hearts. But I think it takes both to get it right.
